Socialisation & Neutralisation
kateshep replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I just wanted to ask a few questions. **I agree about whats said about pups and strange dogs but what about your own dogs and when introuducing a new pup into the home how much time do you allow with the other dogs so they don't become too attached to them and not you ? **Theoretically you had a genetically solid nerved dog that had minimum socialisation as a pup, how would you expect it to react to new situations as an adult ? would it be really nervy, shy ? I've always socialised my dogs heaps because as 8week old babies they were shy, but have never had a dog who was solid nerved, so i just wondered. -

Hi Vicki It does sound confusing but with the heading stuff, it was just what I saw at a clinic a few years ago & the trainer used some young kelpie pups at a demo day too and demonstrated heading....just what i saw but sorry I explained it rather badly :p -

Isn't the ultimate thing though a dogs ability to do real work ? how important is sport to the breed ? I've heard stories of border collies coming from only trial ( 3-sheep) bloodlines and not being able to do farm work at all.

So sorry for your loss what a wonderful tribute, nicely written. She is at peace now playing with the other dogs, yet waiting loyally for mum when her time comes...just as German shepherds do.. ;)

I use mostly adult Pal or Chum for her feed. Sometimes she gets extra treats( cheese) but not lately.
