  1. I can't remember the details but some time ago a man was taken to court in victoria because he did schutzhund, deemed "attack work" with his rottweiler and it was decided something like the training had actually made the dog more stable ? anyone have more details ?
  2. Vicky wrote Many descendents of Schutzhund titled imported working line german shepherds are being used in police/military. For a long time they did not have the quality of working lines as they have now in australia. Some police agencies already have their own breeding programs, but who do they source their dogs from ? either from aussie breeders of in the case of RAAF I know they imported some of their own stock directly from top european Schutzhund lines. But they will need to continue sourcing dogs for diversity and they will have to continually go overseas if things continue the way they are ? They can temperament test their own dogs, some involved in security do not trial their breeding dogs but still test them for working ability. However they are all interlinked, many of their working dogs descend from Schutzhund lines.
  3. A friend of a friend has a Shiba Inu who will just bolt if she gets out the yard, I have heard of huskies doing the same thing when out walking if they get off leash. I've never owned these breeds so I'm just wondering from those who either own them or have experience training them what drives them to behave like this ? huskies just being bred for running ? or strong prey drive- get whiff of something and they are just off ? For those who have trained them how did you go about getting a reliable recall ? How did you motivate the dog ? Can they be sensitive to corrections ? thanks, Katie.
  4. I should say even though people did use their own dogs at some point during the day, they were also encouraged to work other dogs.
  5. I've just done my first block in Vic and people who did bring their own dogs were able to use them everyday I wish I brought my dog will be for the next block ! Had a fantastic week by the way ! my head is still buzzing with all that info
  6. Please add me to the list if it's this year I can make it
  7. Abby even looks a little like Diesel and she's small too, she turned out to be the smallest in the litter:)
  8. There are times when she is more interested in playing with other dogs than food that just shows what kind of positive value she has for playing. I just wanted to join another club where I have an opportunity to further proof her in different distractions and get her to work more consistantly around other dogs which is what I need to do if I want to advance her training. If you do any have ideas I may not be familiar with I'd appreciate and would be open to hearing them I had a halti on one of my other dogs, I didn't find they worked for me. A prong collar I found is a much more better suited for my dogs.
  9. What a great story meriment glad you had things sorted and it went well Abby my gsd is exactly like that too................ , problem is she is pretty close to having a higher value for playing with other dogs than her food in obedience training.....does not have enough prey drive to utilise in training, works best for food....but still would rather hang out with the other dogs She has a prong on her but maybe I might consider an e-collar....
  10. I'd like to know some perth dog trainers/behaviourists people would recommend, for the clients at the vet clinic. Is she a only postive trainer cosmolo ? Any balanced trainers ?
  11. Meriment, is it ok if I pass along your email to a few gsd folk who are not members of Dogzonline so they can contact you ?
  12. Just double checking, prong collars are not illegal in WA to use, just to import ?
  13. Yup me definately I *may* possibly be going overseas in the second half of next year, so if it's before that yes, I also know of a few gsd folk who may be interested too who didn't come to the first one
  14. Hi, I already take my gsd female to an obedience club but it's about 45mins away, we will still go to that one but I was thinking of joining another one in the new year that is closer and to work Abby in more new distractions with more dogs....but she needs to wear her prong collar... Am I likely to be turned away from many clubs if she has one on ? I do most of her training with food, and I'm wanting to trial her in obedience in the near future if I ever get around to it the prong is on her to discourage her from playing with other dogs...........I do have a check chain but I would really much prefer to use her prong Anyone know of any clubs ?? thanks in advance, Katie.
  15. How much do you really learn about drives, behaviour in the general trainers course in 8mnths ? Do many people who do it have little experience in training or do they require people to have a certain level of experience to apply ? I think for the canine behaviour specialist course you do but what about the dog trainers certification ?
  16. Thanks for the link I have seen that article before in a huge Kelpie book, about A3 paper size full of kelpie paintings of the dogs at Elfinvale with bits and pieces of about training and breeding. I also have a book called "Suey the Sheepdog" written about one particular Kelpie at Elfinvale, used to be one of my fav books when I was little. Agree
  17. thankyou for sharing working setters I had never seen what a working line IS looked like, there is always something strange to me seeing the "working " type of breeds it's like a piece of the past is still with us today, as so many breeds have changed dramatically in looks its nice to see what they would have more closely looked like originally as working dogs with shorter coat, ears, looks functional..I think they look awesome
  18. What do use as a prey item for young puppies ? I find with my 7mnth old gsd pup though she shows good prey drive is kinda clumsy going after the ball when building drive ?? (but finds it really easy to go after a rag).. compared to my 3yr old gsd X and his prey is not as strong as hers .
  19. A huge thanks to Steve for coming over and putting on a great seminar  ....it was really informative and I definately learned alot more :p I think charlie really enjoyed himself too  and thanks to meriment for organising it :p
  20. Nekhbet, Have you ever ordered anything before from fordogtrainers.com ? They have some good prices on their products. edit: duh ! Just re-read where Nekhbet already said they have good bargains and reliable delivery BTW KitKat I have ordered products from Leerburg, DVD's and their Amish leather leads and have been very happy with them. I know others too who have purchased their leads and have thought they were great.
  21. K9 force wrote Hopefully K9 will be able to reply to this. Is there ever a worry that by not allowing your dog to play with other dogs, they just don't know how to play/ or recognise play behaviour ? A possible(?) downside would maybe be that they mistake the behaviour for something else like a threat ? I hope this makes sense.
  22. Hi myszka Could you please expand on this comment ? It might come as a surpise to you but dog dont naturally protect their owners, they protect themselves... Would this be because dogs perhaps naturally look to us to protect them instead, being the leader of the pack ?
  23. I'd definately come but just would want to know about costs , but I'm sure it'll be fine !!!
