  1. Having seen others go through BB (as they were new to being dog owners), is that their training is corrective, so requires that the dog actually does the wrong behaviour first, in order to 'correct' it. I would much rather than my dog chooses a desired behaviour because that's what we have trained, and doesn't even attempt an undesired behaviour and then develop an anxiety about doing the wrong thing because it might get corrected.

In the end we had 7 beautiful babies but unfortunately 2 perfect little girls were still born. The last was a late entrant only an hour ago. Very grateful for our 4 strong boys and 1 feisty girl who are all ready to be taught the ropes by Aunty Ginny.

  3. There's quality and there's also technique.

If you don't vacuum everyday (or even if you do), if you do a quick pick up of the visible / larger items and hair, you're going to save your rotating powerheads a lot of grief, save them from jamming up and scratching your floors, and leave them actually do the work they're intended for (which is to kick up additional dust to be sucked up).

Go over once without any rotating powerheads or wheels or brushes.

Go over again with the powerhead.

  4. This is a case of 'being told' to raise hope and appease you, vs, being able to read the facts for yourself. It doesn't make economic sense, having looked somewhat extensively into flying with Qantas recently or other flights, I haven't seen this (and I do read small print), nor have those I have spoken with, who have flown, confirmed this.

Good luck and hope the dog is ok in this transaction.

  5. Do you have non dog people friends whose opinions you could ask on what they would notice / not notice? I was just thinking something like 'No Dogs' is too ambiguous, ie it could just look like a 'no fear' logo type scenario. I think the vests saying 'give me space' are plain enough and you just need to remind people.

The leash sleeve looks like the best option from the above choices.

  6. This sounds just like Panto. In hindsight I would medicate sooner rather than later based on my experience as her behaviours anchored and got progressively worse. Tempeh sounds like she is already beyond most of the controls already stated above. If you do medicate, I can't remember which one we used, but pls make sure it's not the one that just inhibits her faculties and she can still sense everything - it's what a vet started us on and it made things so much worse.

I read somewhere also about it being static in the air and the suggestion was to try a fabric softener sheet (rub it over their fur). I am highly sceptical of this but have yet to try it.

There is an OT for venting (which I'm all for)...no wonder membership and discussion about dog stuff has fallen on the forum when judgement is so blatant in the open, viewable sub-forums.

Disagreeing with particular comments about dog stuff and calling out trolls is one thing but  the kind of banter that long time DOLers get belongs in OT, not the General forum if we have any chance of welcoming and educating new members.

I think it's a good thing people feel like they can bring their true DOL-self to the public arena. I don't post outside of OT all that much because that isn't me, but when I joined, it was all those personalities that kept me coming back long enough to find out when this magical OT appeared.

  8. I bought a freezer with the intention of buying in bulk. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate anywhere local where I can buy bulk. I'm in Newcastle so if anyone has any idea I am open to it.

Thanks for the response on Prime 100. I thought of it as a possible option to reduce the overall cost with out being too bad.

Even buying in larger portions from your usual sources is cheaper or making up your own mix.

RE the prime100 rolls, if you're using as training treats and training you definitely deduct that weight from the daily feed.

A high quality kibble I don't think is any cheaper butcould be more convenient.

If a male has retained both testicles then they look just like a neutered dog. So just because there are none to be seen does not mean the dog doesn't have them. I know for a fact someone bought a "neutered" dog that actually had 2 retained testicles and had to be desexed.

Likewise, it's possible to have prosthetic testicles put in for appearances...

  10. Reinforcers is great but also consider teaching her desired behaviours, where you want her to be, behaviours that are favoured. If the focus is on what not to do, then that's what they'll worry about but if they can focus confidently on 'oh this is what my human wants of me', then they're more likely to behave proactively and confidently. Request those behaviours then throw a party of praise when she does it!

I have never payed more than $65 for a consult even at other vets around where we used to live.

We have been to this vet a few times now and it seems to be dearer every visit!

It's not ideal having to travel so far, I know the cats will hate it, dogs aren't as much of an issue, it costs me very little in fuel, working around three kids will make it hard but at least my old vet is open 7 days a week and except for Sunday's is open until 11pm .

If it's an emergency we'll go local otherwise everyone will have to put up with the travel.

It's definitely not a mix up between the front desk billing and the vet itself? have you questioned it or talked to them about it?

Hi everyone. Thank you for your responses and sorry about delay ..the dreaded flu knocked me over.

l appreciate your comments re mats, l have put  long runner carpets and mats through the house, which are the main safety plan but he has, unfortunately, slipped on a small areas where mats couldn't cover. There are other areas that are of concern eg. smooth concrete and gaps near walls where mats are. He is a min poodle so as suggested l do keep him clipped as well as nails trimmed. In genereal he is good but l do have to momitor him while at home, thankfully because of age he does rest a lot and l crate him if l he is home without a human spervisor.

Shekhina thank you for toe grip link they do look good and testimonials look really promising so l too will give them a try.

Thank you everyone it wonderful to have a dog community site like Dogzonline to turn to.

restrict his access to the areas of concern when you cannot supervise, it is safer and better peace of mind for you both.

Their problem is their numbers and the level of training and staff experience. From memory they have capacity for around 600 dogs when full and when I was there over Christmas they'd put makeshift kennels in the training shed so they could board even more dogs. Problem is this wasn't on sealed concrete and had no exercise yard attached or appropriate ventilation, so the smell in there was absolutely eye-watering (those poor dogs) and they weren't getting the level of exercise they were supposed to.

People would pay $20 or $40 per day extra for their dogs to socialise in 'playtime plus' but if someone called in sick or they didn't have enough staff they just wouldn't run it. Owners had no idea of course, so have paid for 2-4 hours extra exercise for their dogs when they actually only got 2x 15 mins per day if lucky.

Staff were mostly teenagers with little care factor or training to be able to do their jobs properly. The dogs that could cope in kennels and didn't get sick would be okay, but god help those who weren't coping or had an issue crop up while there.

The owner (who thinks 'any monkey can train a dog') is a sexist pig who tries to sweep major issues under the rug. When one of my training bulldogs got kennel cough and was moved to isolation I didn't see him for about 10 days until the owners came to collect (trainers weren't allowed to deal with isolation dogs for disease control). When they arrived and I went to take him to them he was emaciated with green snot pouring out of his face. He hadn't been looked after at all and when myself and my female supervisors apologised profusely and told them it was unacceptable that this had happened and we would refer it up the chain we were admonished by the owner for admitting fault and were told 'this is what happens when you get three f***ing women involved in anything'.

Disclaimer that I left in 2011 so maybe it's improved but it has the same owner running the show so I very much doubt it.

Oh wow, I had no idea it could be that bad. Actually yes I did but not somewhere like hanrob.

I have used a 'boutique' doggy daycare before and I suspected similar but that was just a day board. What a croc. They shut down not long after...

Ex Hanrob employee and trainer here. Absolutely would not recommend sending your dog there.

I do agree with Corvus's comments though that good board/train facilities can be really great for giving you a kick start, as long as you understand that unless you put in the work once they're home they'll just go right back to how they were.

If you're looking for a board & train option in Sydney that will actually look after your dog (my experiences at Hanrob leave me to never trust a dog will be looked after properly), send him to Pet Resorts at Dural. Added bonus is all their trainers actually have qualifications and ongoing education. When I was at Hanrob I wanted to get my qualification through them it was refused because 'any monkey can train a dog' and therefore qualifications weren't needed. I put myself through it.

omg I am absolutely gobsmacked! Thanks for the frank response. I've a friend who sends her 2 dogs there when they go away, the younger one has developed some social issues and it was around the time they had left them there. :/

My cousin works in the pet industry hence the acquisition knowledge! But doesnt own a pet herself so wanted to get some feedback on foods from real dog lovers :) Pro plan had been suggested by a friend but looking at the packaging it seems very scientific so I am guessing it is speciality only? Photo to come soon!

Interesting! What other insider knowledge can you share?! :provoke:  Almost sounded like she could have written it herself with all that lingo!

Seen plenty try go undercover for free market research. oops!

The friend that feeds pro plan, is that what they use?

What's your dog's name and where did you get it from? What are you currently feeding while you're researching? How active is she? don't forget your photo!!

  16. Hi All,

Wow thank you for such a great response! I really had not considered raw before but am definitely intrigued about this. I had considered Ivory Coat however now they have been acquired by TRPC I am wondering if their commitment to Australian farming and natural will be adjusted. Will be interesting to see.

She is still in good health I guess I am just conscious about her age and wanting to make sure she has the best whilst getting older. I have also been suggested Purina's Pro Plan too but think this is more science based rather than natural health.

Will definitely be looking in to raw food. I am interested by meals for mutts too I haven't heard a lot about them before - do you know if they sell in all major pet specialty stores? if not I think i found some to buy online

    Thanks again guys! [emoji4][emoji4]

You sound well more researched than most posters asking about pet food already! Do you work in the pet industy?? Surprised you haven't heard of Meals for
mutts but already knew about the TRPC acquisition!

What's the basis about the Purina suggestion? Is that grocery or specialty?

Please post a photo of your new baby, we love photos!!!
