  1. We recently purchased a wire crate from Vebo but found that the plastic tray was far more flimsy than the one by the TFH brand from Petstock. We've actually ordered a replacement TFH brand tray and will use that instead. The handle on the Vebo crate is also not as sturdy so we are using a TFH brand handle instead.

If you have a dog that isn't hard on crates, Vebo would be ok, esp for the price. The door height on the Vebo crate is higher than the TFH brand so if you are buying a generic crate cover, that might be something to take into consideration. Whilst the quality of the wire and workmanship in the crates are the same, I feel that the TFH brand tray and handle are of far better quality and if we need to purchase another crate, we'll go TFH even though it is more expensive.

If you live in Perth outside the metro area, make sure Vebo do not send it via TNT because TNT subcontract the delivery and the subcontractor......well lets just say we will never use the TNT subcontractor again for delivery to our area. Vebo do have another company they can use if you request it.

  2. Report it to the police and the council.

Does the shop have CCTV footage which the police or ranger may be able to access to identify him?

Just think, what if that dog had attacked a guide dog? Aside from the physical trauma, that dog might never be able to work again if it wasn't able to recover from the psychological trauma. There goes $30,000+ down the drain and the handler has lost the independence that the dog had given them. By reporting it, you will be doing the entire communtiy a huge favour and I for one thank you.

I hope that your dog recovers from the physical trauma and that there are no long term psychological effects from this. If the authorities catch the guy, he should be forced to at least pay your vet bills.

  3. Our 12 year old female desexed GSD woke up, raised her head and then went back to sleep. The 15 month old male entire WSSD sat next to me twisting his head towards the speakers. The 5 year old and 4 year old male GSDs (both desexed) started howling and kept going for 30 seconds after the sound stopped. Then again they reacted the same way to a wolf howling audio clip (I've posted this elsewhere on DOL but couldn't find the post):

  4. Cracked clamshells make great plant pots or a vege garden.

Although it might cost a little more, you can get a plastic moulded pond liner from Bunnings or garden centres. They come in various sizes and shapes and are far more durable. I've posted this elsewhere but here's a video of one of our dogs playing in ours:

  5. I loved watching GSD police dog displays as a kid so I didn't even consider anything else when it came to getting my first dog.

For my latest, I wanted a white GSD but they can't be registered with the ANKC so we went with a White Swiss Shepherd (a cousin of the GSD). Now that I have both breeds in the house, our next will be a WSSD as well.

  6. We have two can-o-worm farms for canine waste and have been using them for 4 years now.

When we initially set them up, we put 4000 worms in each because we have four large dogs. We use the worms you buy for the regular worm farm. If you find that the worms can't keep up with the waste, it's easy enough to start up another canine waste farm.

It takes the worms about a week to get used to their new diet. As others have said, don't feed a canine farm anything other than canine waste.

We worm our dogs every three months and have never withheld their waste from the farm during this time and haven't noticed any drop off in numbers either.

We use the castings and tea in the garden but not on edible plants. I've read on a number of composting sites that castings and tea from canine farms is fine to use on the vege garden but I just can't bring myself to do it.

To answer your questions, a working farm shouldn't smell and neither will the castings or tea. The castings smell sweet just like from a regular worm farm. From our experience, one farm (even with 4000 worms in it eating super premium kibble waste) will struggle to cope with contributions from four large dogs. That's why we have two farms. There's plenty of information online on when and how to harvest the castings depending on which system you're looking at.

  7. We have our elderly girl on Glyde.

We tried Joint Guard and Sasha's Blend but they didn't seem to be doing much other than emptying my purse. I heard about Glyde on here and figured we'd give it a try.

We started seeing results very quickly. It's worked so well that she no longer has the cartrophen boosters or daily rimadyl tablets, just 2 scoops of Glyde daily.

It's not cheap but we've been able to get the 360 gram tubs for $89.00 from Value Vet Products.
