  1. Sorry to hijiack but I had to ask: How much exercise does an adult dog need? Does a large dog need more than a small dog?
  2. I'm pretty sure the bow wow ones are from cina. I get baked ones from pet stock that are locally produced. Given the dramas with chinese made treats over the last few years I wouldn't feed my o/s treats to my dogs. Um, thanks for that bit of info. Ive tried australian pig ears from petbarn n the local vet but my fussy one doesn't like anything other than the bow wow ones. As for the overseas products...the kibble is from the US, the canned from thailand, so I really don't care if the ears are from china or not. Im not fussed about source, but that's just me
  3. I give my dogs pig ears from the bow wow brand (at coles). I was happy with the ingredient list and my lot love them. I also have fresh pig ears which they don't seem to like. How do I dry them? I tried putting them in the sun and it gave off a terrible smell.
  4. Mine gets whatever. One dog is really lazy and doesn't like bones so he gets dry and canned fish for dogs/holistic select/tuna cans, commercial barf n home-mix offals+meat+pureed veg. I feed whatever is convenient. Eta: I use pet can covers to store leftovers in my fridge or use small cans defrosting barf or mixes in my fridge leaves smells too which I counter with baking soda.
  5. Yes, I'm very well aware that my dog has the Maltese coat - as I mentioned, he looks like a B&W Maltese and doesn't shed. Health problems aside, I think most dogs can be trained for behavioural problems if new owners want to; perhaps it's more difficult than training puppies but comparable. A friend's Silky was cared for by an ex-RSPCA worker and it's unbelievable how much more manageable - for a lack of words - he's become (he used to bark non-stop and has been complained several times to body corporate). How can you guarantee that dogs in pounds are all not decent? There are irresponsible owners that dump them or they have been forced to give them up due to circumstance. Imagine if everyone thought like you - no one would adopt from the pound! It is usually an option that is suggested to those who want a new dog. Perhaps your idea of yappy and mine are different. My Westie isn't yappy but he is vocal (growling, sometimes barks) when he sees a passing dog. Does that count as yappy? Whereas my Maltese x does not make a sound at all unless crying to go to do his business or standing up to an aggressive dog. There are several dogs in my area and they are all pretty obedient - just constant barking at strangers walking by. I think I consider that as yappy. I'm just saying what I've encountered is consistent with what he's read in the past, and it's a thing I was worried about before getting my dog as well. I did say that training is more important rather than the breeding. I'm definitely not saying that it's representative. I don't know where you got that everyone dislikes Maltese - Notice I said I think they are a good pick for the OP's criteria. OP - I don't know how much of my dog is Maltese and how much is Papillon (I think he's only 1/16th Pap - all his littermates were pure white) as I've owned neither before, but he definitely measures up to all that I've read about Paps. People have commented that he's the most active Maltese they've seen (but still he definitely is low energy - just that he loves people and his zoomies) but I think that's probably due to the fact that he's still a puppy. He definitely is everything I wanted in a dog. My criteria was almost the same as yours - especially the hypoallergenic one as I'm very sensitive/allergic. I actually drafted my original reply to your post as a positive one for Malteses, until I reread your post wanting only advice from those with purebred ones so I withheld from replying then. I replied my above comment as I saw you'd already set your mind on a Maltese, so didn't see the need to evangelise on about them as I did in my original draft. Good luck on your new puppy! Definitely better to pick out or at least see your puppy before you choose him.
  6. I'd say based on your criteria, a Maltese would be a good pick. However I have a Maltese x Papillon who looks like a B&W Maltese but has a Papillon temperament, and hence I would say I would prefer a Papillon to a Maltese. He's sweet, quiet, likes to play alone, loves cat toys, seldom barks, loves running around like a bunny, and really is just a cat in disguise Friends' Malteses are yappy things and I think training is a big part of that rather than the breeding. Mine is from a BYB (I know) but still has a beautiful temperament. My Westie sheds (my Maltese x does not) and normal housekeeping takes care of that. I hardly see hairs around other than his crate actually. If you're set on getting a Maltese, perhaps check out the local pound first? As you say, Malteses are a commonly dumped breed.
  7. I have bought (and still have) the canned fish variety for my dogs, but they don't seem to like it that much. They usually aren't picky but dislike fish in general I think. I've tried the Holistic Select seafood cans but they don't like it, and I've tried giving them pieces of raw fish (and once a whole fish - it was left in its original state; rarely does my Westie leave anything in one piece) and prawns and they don't like it either. That's why I was happy when they liked the F4D cans, cuz I've read so much about fish being really good for dogs. They don't have allergies and perhaps the chicken mince is making the food more flavourful? I normally feed raw and don't like canned foods but being unable to feed them fish gives me a headache, that's why I'm asking if anyone has tried this brand or know if it's any good.
  8. Has anyone tried the Fish4Dogs canned food in supermarkets? What do you guys think about it? I bought a few and was happy to see real fish meat in there (sorry if most have it; kinda new to the world of wet food)! Reminded me of the Holistic Select ones but my pup isn't that keen on HS... There are also the Fish4Dogs Dental Sea Jerky treats I saw at my local pet store.
  9. thanks hesapandabear! i must have missed that post... will contact her now
  10. i'm at the gold coast area, any idea on how to get samples or if i can get a 3kg bag? thanks very much
  11. 26 Jan 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWRtZM2fbAc...eature=youtu.be A 15 minute video of incredible animal cruelty and abuse was almost instantly removed from YouTube after an instant flurry or outrage poured into the website. The video, allegedly taped by a Malaysian woman named Doreen Lee shows her boyfriend, Alan Tan, kicking, throwing and performing other depraved acts of abuse against her toy poodle, named Sushi, while forcing the terrified defenseless companion animal to sit up and beg for the abuse. The entire video can be seen at this line, but BE WARNED, IT IS GRAPHIC and NOT INTENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN OR ANYONE THAT CANNOT WITNESS GRAPHIC ABUSE. Thousands of people are now cross-posting comments and parts of the video on YouTube, facebook, MySpace and literally every social network across the Internet in an attempt to locate and arrest the people responsible for the images seen in the video. The videographer, Doreen Loo's face book page, which can be viewed best if copy and pasted from this article, http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pr...757&sk=wall has been flooded with comments and threats ever since the video has been tracked to her. Pictures of Sushi and her are posted on albums visable on her page and many background shots resemble locations seen in the video. There are also pictures of a Shih Tzu, posted 10 months ago, standing in the same position poor Sushi is being forced to stand in while enduring his unending abuse. It is being assumed that this 2nd dog is or was being abused in the same manner by this demented pair as poor Sushi. At this current time, the most recent report is that police are still looking for this couple and the condition of Sushi and the second dog pictured are unknown. Some reports are that Sushi has already died from unknown causes and others claim that he may still be alive, which would truly be a miracle after seeing his treatment in this video. Allegedly, this couple live somewhere in Malaysia and sadly the animal abuse laws in that country are lax. A charge of animal cruelty could carry a fine of RM200, (less than $75) and/or 6 months in prison. Considering the depth of inhumanity witnessed in these 15 minutes of hell and the obvious outrage being seen instantly across cyberspace, it's pretty obvious the world would prefer to see this couple get a lot more than the slap on the wrist they could possibly receive. The world is anxiously awaiting the arrest of this sadistic couple. Already an online petition is gathering signatures worldwide. It is asking the Malaysian government to prosecute this couple over and above the standard punishments imposed in this Asian country whose primary religion is Islam. As the world awaits the next move, millions are hoping for a happy outcome for a tiny little poodle miles away. http://www.examiner.com/dog-rescue-in-taco...trages-millions
