  1. Thanks Alkhe and Kelpiecuddles, they are both great ideas. I could do the pram idea but i'd have to make sure she was confined and unable to jump out. If I put her bed next to the window she'll just do her usual - go skitz and run along the window sill. She is a terrier, lol. I'v increased her walks to twice daily and she is loving that. I just can't wait until she can use her stairs again to come to bed with me ( my bed is very high and she has her own set of steps to climb up and down)
  2. You didn't hijak marg. I hope your girl goes well with her surgery.
  3. She loves the car, but I was thinking she may place to much pressure on her rear leg as she won't sit, she has to stand up and look out the window. She suffers seperation anxiety and just doesn't cope in a crate. My vet said she would do more damage to her leg by freaking out inside a crate. From day 1 she was confined to one room. she now has full run of the house but doesn't want to leave her bed. However I can definitely sit with her for periods of time throughout the day at the window.
  4. My Lily is nearing 11yrs and she recently had a ACL repair surgery. Her recovery is going nicely. The problem is she is bored bored bored. She is spending her days in her bed and is only moving to go outside to toilet and to eat and drink. I'm taking her for her daily 10min walk as per the vets instructions. I need some ideas on how to mentally stimulate her without psysically over doing it. She is not food orientated, i'v bought her bones but she's not touching them. She is pretty much spending her days in bed sooking. TIA ETA: I have a kong and a treat ball and she has no interest. I think she may be a bit depressed as well as bored. The couch is off limits and so is my bed, so her life has changed. I have my front window blinds pulled down permanantly now as that contributed to her snapping her ACL. She loves to lie on the couch and watch the world go by and jump off and run into the window whenever someone or a dog goes past. So her visual stimulation is gone to.
  5. My nearly 11yr old girl recently had a ACL repair. She is recovering nicely. I'm aware of the risk of the other ACL snapping and if that happens down the track I don't think i'll choose surgery again. It has taken it's toll on her and the first week post surgery was high care (was like having a baby again, carrying her around and cleaning her up, she couldn't stand and wet and soiled herself) I hope your dog is still going well. My vet said that if it's left for months it is a lot worse and harder to fix. (The only reason I wouldn't do it again is the toll that it has taken on her, I won't put her through it again) but every dog is different in there recovery.
  6. Thanks for that. I'm grossed out. Fleas, FLEAS!! This is the first time in 12 years i'v had a flea problem. 12 years ago we moved into a new rental and my dog got fleas. One or two spot on treatments and they were gone. My vet said fleas are rampant at the moment due to the weather we have had. I move into the new house on Monday so will definately bomb the place. I don't want the fleas coming with us.
  7. Thanks everyone. I'm naieve with fleas as my animals have never had them. There is certainly no infestation. I'v seen 2 on my girl and got the Advantage then every month I notice another 1 or 2 fleas on her so go again with the Advantage. I know I am completely ridiculous here, but fleas just freak me out!!! I move house in 2 weeks and pray we don't have the same problem there.
  8. My dog is 8 and has never had a flea on her in her life...........until now I also have a cat who is outdoors during the day and she spends the evening/night inside. (also never had a flea on her). We have several stray cats that hang around. The only thing I can think of is it's these stray cats who have fleas and are passing it onto my cat who is then passing it on to my dog. I'm using advantage but it's getting expensive, i'm treating them both monthly. Is there anything else I can use to? Does flea powder actually work? Keeping my cat indoors permanantly is not an option. ;) She goes nuts if she can't go out during the day. I'v tried keeping her in but she scratches the doors and has torn lace down from the windows (i'm renting to) Is there anything I can put on the garden and lawn areas to?
  9. Thanks Rappie, very much appreciated
  10. No. They happen out of the blue, ussually when she is relaxing. The other night was the worst one. She was panting throughout and ussually she comes good instantly. This one it took her a bit longer to come good (took longer for her to regain full use of her legs, she was wobbly for longer) As i'v said her bloods were all clear and my vet said *IF* it's a tumour it will present itself as the seizures will become more frequent. This started around 6-8months ago and it's been a regular 4-6 weekly episode. If it's not a tumour............well I don't know? The vet only talked about the possibility of tumour.
  11. Yes, It was a previously undiagnosed lesion/tumour in my old girl's case. With her they became more severe and more frequent starting off as barely noticeable changes until they she started experiencing grand mal seizures, arched back, snapping at air and losing control of her bladder as well. The the last one she had, I was with her from ten minutes prior to her having it and it was her third grand mal, she bit her tongue badly and I decided it was enough for her. On the way to the Vet for her final journey, she couldn't move much, but she was very alert and very calm, her breathing was good. She was more interested in her late night car trip with her head on my lap. I kept it together very well, because I didn't want her to pick up I was distressed,I talked to her on the way there and she licked my fingers, but I knew for her sake, she would only be coming home to be buried. The Vet laid out the options and made it clear the prognosis was all down hill, but he had to tell me the other options were to sedate her, admit her and start her on meds and see if she regained full mobility, which was a distinct possibility. The thought of my darling spending a night away from her home and then making the decision to say goodbye in the morning was not an option because I was not going to let her go through one more seizure , so we all talked cheerily and cooed to her , like we usually do and it was over. Then we all cried. I have absolutely no regret in not letting her go through another debilitating fit whatsoever. I am sorry if I sound a tad clinical, but if it is a lesion and progressive in your dog's situation, I would say don't let her go through that, because it physically takes its toll on the dog , prior to the grand mal fits, she was agitated and frightened. Afterwards, she was physically exhausted. It is very emotionally distressing. Oh i'm so sorry gwenneth, so heart breaking :D *IF* it is a tumour I won't put her through anything. As I said I wouldn't go down the path of surgery or chemo. She is such a sensitive litle girl, it's enough for a fly to land on her and she can yelp She had Metacam for a week with her recent dental. I'll get in touch with my vet on Friday. As I said I think it might be a watch and wait situation.
  12. Thanks for all the info shortstep That's why the vet did the bloods, to rule out other causes. Aussielover It's horrible when you lose them. I pray they don't get more frequent.
  13. No. She was certain it is not epilepsy as she said dogs don't get epilepsy at 8yrs old. I just rang but she's not working until Friday. If it a tumour the seizers will happen more frequently. I think it's a wait and watch situation. As I said I won't put her through surgery and chemo.
  14. MRI or CT will diagnose and a chest xray and abdo ultrasound will see if it has spread. I don't know whether to just watch and wait and see if they become more frequent. If it is a tumor I won't put her through surgery or chemo i'll just provide palliative care I'll give my vet a ring.
  15. My girl has been having seizures They are happening about every 4-6 weeks. She will be absolutley fine and all of the sudden her back end and hind legs go on her. She can't walk and if she tries to she falls over to the left. Her eyes glaze over and she whines. Last night she had another one and this time her front legs went on her too They last about 5min and then she is back to normal. She had a Dental in December and had bloods done which came back clear. The vet said what she is experiencing is siezures, but that as she is older (8yrs) they are caused by something other than epilepsy. The vet thought perhaps a brain tumour and that if a brain tumour is the cause then the seizures will be become frequent. Has anyone experienced this with a dog?
  16. I just simply do not take my girl off lead anymore. She is only 4kg and a few years ago two large cross breed dogs came rushing up out of nowhere and she ended up with two puncture wounds on her back I did kick and yell and boy did the owner (well it was the owners sister who was looking after the dogs) cop an earful. Just not worth the risk for a small dog owner. I would of reacted in the same way as the woman did.
  17. And put some strips of wood across from side to side at regular intervals. The non slip under rugs materials works well too. Thanks MM, I like that idea.
  18. Thats not nuts, that's lovely. I once spent over $200 in vets and treatments for a pet mouse. Now that is NUTS Hubby at the time didn't know about it. He would of killed me.
  19. Forgot to add when I go away for a night I take my girl to my mothers house so she doesn't feel lonely. My mum says, i'v heard of babysitting the kids, but I babysit the dog!!! My girl sleeps in bed with her "grandmother" :D
  20. No, we can't be mad. There's too many of us. :p I'm loving this thread. Keep saying, 'Me, too!' to just about everything posted. Just a tiny thing to add. My tibbie girls are a a bit low to the ground....& don't like the grass ends tickiing their bottoms when going to the toot. So I have my own electric mower, for no other purpose than to keep the grass very short in the part of our yard where they go. And a 'path' mown short leading up to it. That's between the regular times the blokes mow all the yard with a ride-on. Mita that is just beautiful. I love that
  21. Yep me too It's sad isn't it when your on the edge and have little doona, but you can't bear to move the dog? :D Now that is love.
  22. I don't know. No help sorry. For me I simply would NOT move. My dogs are are like my children. I certainly wouldn't move anywhere where I couldn't have my children with me, same goes for my animals.
  23. You know the kind of things your non doggy family and friends think your just crazy for doing? My girl seems to be getting some arthritis and is having trouble jumping up on my bed. She sleeps in bed with me everynight so on the weekend i'm off to Bunnings and i'm going to make a ramp to put off the end of the bed. I was worried about 'grip' but I have some carpet offcuts that i'll nail on. My family think I am nuts My old boy refused to walk on tiles and polished floor boards. We moved to a house that was ALL tiles and polished floorboards. I ended up buying a heap of cheap floor runner mats just so the dog was happy. It looked a bit funny But my boy was happy.
  24. Yes, though mouthing has never been a problem with my previous dogs. I do think that I have a 'style' of training seeing I prefer little dogs and have always had them. My 'style' certainly is not for this dog. I don't know anything about NILIF, i'll read up your link tonight and also read up about drive. One other thing that he has done 3 times now, is of a night when it's time for bed he won't come. He lays on the couch or my bed and looks at me as if to say 'no, not bed time' I go over to him to pick him up (which I won't be able to do if grows much bigger, so obviousley I need a different way to deal with this) 3 times he has growled at me as I pick him up, just a little growl. What can I do about this?
