This is what we do and he is brilliant. He walks nice and slowly and calm by my side. I have no problems with him on walks and off lead. Persephone, my 2yr old hates the stroller, i'm getting him to practice on his trike once he has the hang of it he can ride on our walks and they should last for longer. Thanks again guys.

I do have him inside during the day for short periods of time, the water bottle is my best method to calm him. But having him on a leash inside is a good idea as well. I will try that. Not enough exercise :rolleyes: I thought it was enough The onlead walks are only about half an hour as my 2yr old gets tired and bored (he won't sit in a stroller anymore)

Thanks everyone. He doesn't pee around me or the kids, it's when we have visitors he's like " Oh my god a visitor, how exitement" I like the idea of putting him on a lead until he calms down around visitors, it is very annoying for the people visiting. Yes a 2yr old and a puppy is not the best mix, they hype each other up. Again having him on a lead when my son is in the backyard playing until he settles is a good idea. He responds well when he is not over excited, it's when he's hypo he doesn't listen to a thing. When calmer the 'arggh' works brilliantly as does the spray bottle. He no longer mouths me, he may have a little nibble but the 'arggh' stops him in his tracks, however he gets excited around the kids and does mouth them. Exercise wise, I take him to a offlead park and he runs non stop for up to an hour twice a week. He goes for a onlead walk twice a week about half an hour. I throw the ball for him everyday - he can go forever. Him and my other dog play non stop from dawn to dusk, always running around the yard. I am assuming this would be enough exercise????? The jumping up issue is my fault :rolleyes: When I got him at 6 weeks old it was thought he was a mini foxie x silky. I had no idea he would grow up to be what he is, I thought I was getting another little lap dog. My mini foxie does jump up, but she is 3.5kg so there is no drama there. I should say she only jumps when invited to. So when my pup was little I did encourage the jump (as in jump on my lap) no way I want him to jump up on my lap now Thanks guys for the advise. It's just the over excitement, otherwise he a great dog.

The sit and drop command doesn't work when he is so excited. Hopenfox, maybe he is a little anxious, he gets very jealous when I give my other dog attention and even the kids getting attention. He cries and carries on.

My 6 month old crossbreed (AmStaff maybe) is really hyperactive and naturally very strong. I am assuming the hyperactivity is a breed trait of the bull breeds? I need some ideas and tips on how to train and calm him down. I do use a water spray bottle and that does have a effect, but it only stops him while in the act. Is there anything I can do to prevent it? My issues are: -Jumping up (I have bruises all over my thighs as he is so strong) -Over excitement at everything. The kids cop a good mouthing as they are closer to his level. I can see in his face that he is really trying to be a good boy, but it's just to much and he can't help himself (he gets so excited he wets himself) Otherwise he is great. He sits, drops, walks well on a lead, is great off lead, comes when called. Is over excitement just something i'll have to put up with untill he matures and settles down? I know it might not sound much of an issue, but to me it is. I'm used to little lap dogs, i'v never had a dog so hyperactive before. I can run him, I can throw a ball or frisbee and he just doesn't tire.

My pup and older dog are play fighting from dawn to dusk. I don't know where they get all the energy I leave them to it. My older dog is very vocal and sounds like she is killing my pup, but she doesn't make any contact at all. When the pup gets a bit carried away and rough, my older girl quickly puts him in his place and lets him know he's gone to far. He backs off (for a minute)

They are soooo cute!!!! That's great it's working well with the pup outside during the day. I'm just a paranoid mum My pup is fine outside during the day while i'm home, so it wouldn't be any different if i'm not there.............but i'll keep him inside while i'm out for a bit longer.

I wouldn't be waking her up to take her to the toilet. Let her sleep and take her to the toilet when she wakes on her own. And yeah she needs more time out of the pen, more stimulation.

I think it's fine to have your pup in your secure backyard before all his vacccinations. I mean how many stray/unvaccinated dogs get into people's backyards? None really. My pup is 10weeks and he loves playing outside. During the day he plays outside with my older dog (weather permitting) I leave the back door open and they have access to the laundry. I havn't got a crate, I use my son's portacot for him to sleep in. When I go out during the day, he always goes in his cot. I won't leave him outside if i'm not home. I'd worry about him to much if he was outside. I know he is safe in his cot and can't get into any mischeif or harm, and his cot is his 'safe place' he feels secure there. Do you have a pic of your new baby to share?

Just wanted to say your girl is gorgeous!!!!! And I would desex at 6 months.

It's been 5 years since I had a pup so i'm a bit rusty. When my pup has a accident inside sometimes there is no time to whip him outside when I see him sniffing for a wee as he is so darn quick. I picked him up yesterday mid wee and took him outside to finish. Should I pick him up mid wee or let him finish? Is it to late once he has started?

I always have a toy with me and when my pup starts biting I put the toy in his mouth for him to chew on. When he is really hyper I get up and walk away

The clinic I work at consultation fee is $40, which is on the cheaper side for our area. We don't see very many clients with pet insurance.

This is going back 4 years ago now, so things may have changed since. I'm in Vic and enquired about de-barking one of my dogs. Vets told me to go to South Australia if I wanted it done.

Morgan I agree totally with you. And before I get the " go visit a shelter and look at pups" comment. I have worked at a 'kill' shelter and assisted in euthanasing of these 'accidental matings'. I am also a Veterinary Nurse. I had my female pup desexed at 5 months. I had no problem in being a responsible owner for those 3 extra months. I am a de-sexing advocate, but not before 5 months of age.

Thanks Meggsie. I'm going in to see him soon. He had more blood tests and he is getting worse i'm not sure what is happening.

Fido and Meggsie, sorry about your babies. Doof seems to be improving slowly. I kinda don't want to get my hopes up though as the vet did say he may not make it and he won't eat

Oh Fido, that is so sad. Doof was the same, perfectly well then he awoke me at 5:30am crying out. The floor was covered in vomit and urine, he couldn't get up, was shaking. His belly was as hard as a rock and one side looked swollen. He managed to get himself half up as he had to vomit again and his back legs were all wobbly and he was hunched up (I really thought I was losing him) Oops I forgot, for 2 days before this happened he started drinking HEAPS and peeing HEAPS, but was otherwise normal. The beef bone he had was given to him on the Monday, he became ill on the Saturday morning. I wonder if it was the beef bone would he have got sick sooner??? We find out tomorrow if it's just Pancreatitis or if it's a tumor in his liver that has caused it. Thanks guys for your info.

Thanks TG. My dog didn't have any change in his diet prior to the attack, no fatty foods at all. I did notice his stools were mucousy about a week or so before he fell ill. (actually he did have a beef shank to chew on, I wonder if the fat on that could of contributed???)

My boy's in hospital atm with pancreatitis (see thread in GDD). Has anyone else's dogs suffered from pancreatitis? Did it take long to recover? Were there any complications? Did it reoccur? What were the symptoms. (my dogs symptoms were different to what i'v read) Did you have to feed a special diet long term? So many questions

Good news - It's just a fatty lump. YEY!!!!!!! Just as well cause the vet checked his heart again (he has congestive heart failure) while his heart has not gotten any worse since his last check up YEY!!! the risk of an anaesthetic would still be to great for him if he ever did require surgery. But i'm just happy he's ok. Thanks all for your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!

I just dicovered a lump on my 10yr old Chi x Pom :rolleyes: It's on his chest, it feels quite deep, it's attatched to something inside. I'll be on the phone to the vet 8:30 tomorrow morning to make an appointment. Trying not to stress as it could be innocent, but my gut feeling is not too good. Will update tomorrow. Wish us luck!!!!!

My poor girls tumor has just gotten too big, so lots of cuddles for her today. Why do we have these darn animals?? ;)

I agree Haven. But how do I go about it? He won't eat raw meat. I have tried meaty bones, chicken wings and necks, roo tail, mince. Needless to say I gave up. Anyone got any tips?
