  1. persephone - here is where the problem lays - they are neighbours that pop over whenever - their kids play with our kids in the yard - and I dont think Roy should be locked away or on a lead just because they are here (they are here multiple times a week). So maybe I need to be tougher on Roy? I have 4 children - 3 of which are old enough to be awesome trees when Roy gets jumpy - maybe I should be doing more?
  2. Hi Ok, so my neighbour thinks the way I do things with my pooch (18wk old pup) is stupid - for eg : dog jumping on kids - be a tree, no hitting dog at all, ect ect. Anyway - this morning he was over and said if the dog jumped on his child he would hit it - and Im like - no one is allowed to hit my dog ever! He just said - well I would. He didnt think it mattered that he is a puppy ect - no excuses just whale the dog!! Any way - how do you deal with people who use (or want to) their very different forms of training or discipline on your dog.
  3. Awww - Zeus sound super cute and so clever!! We stared clicker traing Roy from when we first got him and he does great with tricks - but like you I want awesome on a lead...and good manners lol!! Will definitely let you know how it goes (start this Sunday!!!!) - and I have found a Mum at the kids school who has used Dapto training and loved it more than Wollongong - think she said the classes could be a little big though.
  4. Thats so sad - glad someone like you were there to help the little fella out.
  5. Thanks Christina, dogmad, aussielover for you advice and experiences! Hubby has definitely mellowed!! (love it when Im right )
  6. She looks so cute - her tail is just gorgeous!!!
  7. Hi Skip - yep thats one of the issues I have in there - bit harsher than I would like. One of the other puppy owners pointed out last week that none of the older well trained dogs didnt look very happy - nor did the owners lol!!! RiverStar-Aura - Ive taken the plunge and just booked into the Advance Puppy Course (start next Sunday!!) at the Naughty Dog School - looks like they cover a lot, and like you I like the idea of a smaller class
  8. Hi Rubystar I usually buy one called "Lustre Aide" - its really quite strong so I dilute it with water in another spray bottle - that brings the price down a bit lol!
  9. Oooohhh - crowded is hard!! Roy was already very side tracked in a class of 4 at puppy training lol!! Just so tempted with Dapto training as it is about a 10 minute walk from our place!!! Will go check out the naughty dog school website - thanks for the info
  10. Hi there Just wondering if anyone trains in the Illawarra / Wollongong area?? I have had Roy in at the training at JJ Kelly park (Sat afternoons) for his puppy training course, and am considering changing to the one at Dapto showground (Sat mornings) from now on (better time for us and much closer). Does anybody have experience with either of these, or know of any others?
  11. Thanks so much for your replies and wisdom I have shown OH this thread and he feels more at peace that it was a normal reaction - not an aggressive one.
  12. Thanks Janba (will definitely show hubby this thread!!)
  13. Ah Ha! That was what I was trying to get across : instinctive reaction to the pain Thanks for the link persephone - will check that out now. To tell you the truth I was so frustrated by this as Im so vigilent of how the children act around Roy (and how he acts around them!)- I felt like Id let the team down big time!!
  14. Just after a few opinions please This morning my 8yr old son threw a toy for my 18 wk old Border collie pup - the pup came bolting back with the toy when my son had turned and crashed into his legs. My son fell full force on Roy who squealed and bit out and got my son on the chin. So I ended up with a shocked boy and a pooch squealing like he was being murdered. My son was grazed a little on the chin (Roy still has has razor puppy teeth) and Roy favored his leg for a bit but was fine about 5 minutes later (and a few minutes of squealing!!). Ok, so this was fully supervised play (we have 4 young kids so supervision is very important!!) and in my eyes a this was a big accident. While Im not happy Roy snapped - I get it, he got really hurt, and the way he did it and afterward he seemed fearful not at all angry. OH is of the opinion that Roy shouldnt have bitten full stop (even in this situation) - and is worried Im sticking up for him, in which I told him that that the kids are number 1 (2,3 & 4!!!!). And Roy, though he can jump and do silly puppy things, is really good with them, and shows no aggression with them in any situation - whether food, toys or anything involved. So what is your opinion - bad puppy or unforunate accident? Or something else?
  15. Thanks for the replies I want to hear more - us puppy owners need some light at the end of the tunnel lol!!!!!!!!
  16. Hi Aztec Gold I have a 22 month old, 4 yr old, 6yr old, 8yr old and a 17 week old Border Collie - Im very tired lol!!! We want our pooch to be super awesome when he grows up - so we have been putting in lots of hard yards since we got him. The older kids can understand how to calm him down and stop him jumping (be a tree) ect - but the 22 month old no way, she has no idea how to behave around or toward the pup. It just means constant supervision and correction (of child or pup) when they are together - which is a lot for us as he is an inside dog. And like persephone said - a special quiet place just for the pup I have found obedience training awesome too - you can get lots of ideas from the trainer on things that may be happening at home between the family and pup.
  17. Well I was out this morning and have come home to find a note to go to the post office after 4.30pm for a package - hope its mine and not one of hubby's!!
  18. I have been looking through old "puppy problem" threads (ones from a few years ago) so Im wondering - those who posted puppy problems back then, what was the problem, and did you fix it or did you pup grow out of it - or are the still doing it lol!! Just curios as a fairly new puppy owner :D
  19. Oooooohhhh, so maybe this week YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
