  1. Goldens do have a breed specific rescue group I believe. But my neighbour breeds them and may have one that she is looking at rehoming. If you're interested I can have a chat with her and see if she's still available??
  2. sigh guess what the answer was and heaven forbid not in the Gym room (which he never uses) He's worried about being 'stuck' with 6 cats in the place, doesn't matter what I tell him, even with rescue backup. Funny thing is he said he would have been fine if I had said I had wanted to take the mum on her own (she's only about 12 months old) but will not 'run the risk' of becoming a cat house with all those babies. Will continue to work on him, cat season here is still a good month away, maybe I'll just have to take a single youngish cat and ...
  3. we did however manage to rehome another foster but I think it broke his heart when I did, even though she went to a wonderful home.
  4. It will be interesting to see if: a. hubby agrees to this venture after 2 failed foster dogs and b. the isolation room in question is his 'gym room' which of course he uses every day
  5. great that gives me enough info to approach LSH (Long Suffering Hubby) about this local girl in need of assistance
  6. One thing about cats is that they form food preferences very early in life (i.e. 6-8 weeks as well as in utero and maternal influences) so I feed a real mix - if my fosters are from a shelter they give me the dry food (usually Hills kitten) plus some Hills wet/Whiskas kitten pouches (surprisingly the latter are quite good - a lot better than Whiskas adult cat food), a bit of raw beef/lamb/chicken (minced to start with and then moving onto chunks) and chicken wing tips. By the time they leave they can demolish a larger chicken wing joint and have tasted (and often it's just a taste not part of their diet) cheese, kitten milk, raw egg, sardines....whatever I have on hand. I feed Mum the same as the kittens (and let her clean up their leftovers) - all my Mums arrive hating raw and leave demanding chicken wings. Raw is not for everyone though - but the more variety you can introduce earlier, the more it can help protect against finicky eating down the track. great thanks for that, I have noticed with my daughters cat that even though she started out on whiskers kitten (which was all we could get at the time), she will only eat the hills lol.
  7. that is the next question, what is a good quality food?
  8. great thanks kelpiecuddles I might need a cupboard for a mummy that might be coming home
  9. I was told that a mumma cat and kittens stinks the house out, is this the case? I have never known cats to smell bad (well our cat when she was an actual kitten and was on whiskers was pretty bad from memory). If they are on good food, how bad is the smell?
  10. thanks, just thought that this is such a wonderful community that there would be similar for the cats will have a look at cat world too thanks
  11. What was the vet talking about when they were saying "behavioural modification tablets" ?? In the very early days of my failed foster's anxiety our local vet tried him on the equivalent of antidepressants which after a week actually made him so angry he was growling and snapping at us, at which point we stopped and slowed down our whole approach it sometimes happens apparently. Is this what you were talking about? or is there something new on the market that assists with anxiety?
  12. Cheapest I can locate it, costs around $112 - $115. The pup in question cannot eat anything else due to gut issues that the vets are still working through anything else gives the poor babe the runs something shocking. that price for only a 12kg bag when you need 3 cups a day doesn't last long. Is there anywhere I can try that I might be able to get it cheaper please ??
  13. interesting, only had similar once so far and that was a small pound near Melbourne and that was because the dog was already fully vetted and they were cover covering that. Weird how there are so many different ways to approach the same situation. I so wish we had national laws & rules covering all of this.
  14. I just read this on Facebook Pound Cats SPONSORSHIP / FUNDING WANTED We are considering taking a lovely blue tabby torti DMH from Campbelltown Pound and to put it mildly it isn't easy getting them out of the pound. The easiest way would be to purchase her at $200 which includes desexing and lifetime registration. For some reason the pound does not vaccinate so we would need to pay for that too. If anyone would like to fund her release / vetwork we would then refund the adoption fee ($200 plus cost of vaccination) to you once the cat was adopted. We are currently funding quite a lot of cats and kittens so any help appreciated I recently took a dog from Renbury Pound and it didn't cost me anything, or I think I paid for the microchip which was $30, and just assumed all pounds released to rescue the same way, is this not the case?
  15. RSPCA actually should have emergency respite care for these situations, I'm sure I have read it somewhere - definitely worth contacting them, they should be able to temporarily board them for a week or 2 at least.

  17. I messaged the lady that created the Controlled Unleashed over in America not really expecting to get very far, she replied that there are people here in Canberra and is getting contact numbers wohoo :)
  18. Do any of these work with the CU Method, does anyone know??
  19. that's already done and been approved She had a phone conversation with one that the rescue coordinator recommended, not overly impressed to be honest. I think they need a second opinion. His response was don't give him any feedback unless he works for it which is fine but this also includes fear, so she was told to basically ignore the freezing and panic attacks. AFter reading the controlled unleashed and it made so much sense to me, having an anxious failed foster this type of approach would have killed him. thanks for the heads up on the link much appreciated, will keep you posted on how we go.
  20. bit more info: its either freezing or rushing in.. tonight he rushed in, normally he goes through after Dex. its only every 3rd or 4th walk that he will freeze, and its a whole lot worse if they take him on his own. Is there anyone that can recommend either a good vet with behaviourist quals or a behaviourist in Canberra or surrounds??
