  1. We put Vapourub on all our electrical cords etc as our cat has a habit of chewing on them. Worked really well. (Except we forgot when we bought a new coffee machine, little bugger chewed right through it on the first day!)
  2. It has been a while since we've had a puppy, and it seems a lot has changed as far as what's available! In my brief perusal, and talking to a few breeders, it seems that crate training would be the sensible idea. Where do I start!? How do I work out what type, size etc would be best (for a Welshie)? When would I use it? Just at night, or every time I go out? Do people keep the crated dog inside or outside? We have a large back deck (with lattice doors) which we consider our outdoor living/dining area. Would it be ok to leave a puppy there for short periods during the day, until I feel comfortable enough with her going up and down the stairs? I had planned on taking the puppy with me most places, but was actually advised that it wasn't such a good idea with a velcro dog like a Welshie, so I need to find somewhere safe while I do the school run, go to the supermarket type of thing.
  3. I just made my husband dig out a massive Oleander we had growing in the backyard. It's the only thing I knew for sure is poisonous!
  4. I was clearing out some things a few months back, and came across a small box of childhood momentos. Included was a box with several puppy teeth from my first family dog. We're talking over 30 years ago here! I must have been a strange kid.
  5. What a sweetheart. Looks like she's having a great time, and I agree with the other comments that if you hadn't mentioned it, you'd never know she was blind.
  6. Welsh Springer Spaniel (waiting...) Irish Setter Irish Wolfhound Beagle Golden Retriever
  7. I had to think about this, and actually get the camera to check, but no, I close the other eye when taking a photo!
  8. This is a plus, absolutely. I think I just have to go and meet the Brittany puppies and see the adult dogs and see if I fall in love with them as much as I have the Welshies. I did suggest one of each They are both such lovely dogs!
  9. We are going to meet a Brittany breeder, but the Welshie would have to come from interstate. (I have met and loved a couple of Welshies, but haven't met a Brittany before, which is why I'm currently swaying toward the Welshie!).
  10. I had done all my research and decided that a Welsh Springer Spaniel was the dog for us, so came to this forum to do some more research, and now a Brittany is in the running! How do I decide?! We have a big yard, but dog will be part of the family, so fine to come inside. I work from home, and am planning on taking the dog with me whenever possible (so school run, dog friendly cafe down the road etc) so socialisation isn't a problem. We also have the time to devote to training, brushing and exercise. Main priority is to be great with kids. Both seem to fit this profile, is there anything I'm missing? And pros and cons anyone can offer? Also in these two breeds, is there much difference in temperament between male and female? Thank you
  11. I had this recently with a good friend, she posted on FB that they had just visited a breeder and gave a long list of breeds ending in "poo". I was instantly on the phone to her trying to explain all the reasons why she should get a purebreed, but "lots of her friends have dogs from this woman and they are all beautiful dogs, and the puppies were all so cute". Sigh. It sounds like it's just the done thing in her town, and they are still calling them "Designer". I haven't heard from her since, probably when I pointed out that it was the equivalent of buying a "designer watch" on the streets of Bangkok and paying the price of a real Rolex. She did post a photo of her wall of a little black ball of fluff, but didn't answer any of the questions as to the "breed".
