Terri I do the Thankyou thing with Jake. He's very good at it, careful of the back chaining. He will now have a quick bark and come find me if he wants a treat. I actually don't mind it when he starts using stuff I taught him to his own advantage, I take it as a sign he understands and has confidence enough to try offering behaviour. -

Terri if you don't have an actual crate can you create a crate like area for her. The point of a crate is a kind of safe den, Jake goes and sits right in the corner under my sons desk if I go out and he has a bean bag and stuff to get into. It's kind of a kids ideal fort, she might feel comfortable having a safe cave. Dogs don't really care we bought them a real crate I think it's more the security of that closed in feeling. Mrs RB with Jake Steve said that since his decisions were rubbish I needed to write a new script for him that is rehearsed. We have a very regimented rehearsed approach to seeing stuff. Frosty isn't as nutso but it might help to give her a script that you run regardless of the dog. She doesn't get to decide, you tell her how it goes each and every time. -

Do you have a crate. Jake loves his crate, I took it out the car the other day to wash it and he was so happy he hopped in it for a nap. If you can pop her in for the beginning of the night at least and see how she goes. Jake is Strangely a huge party animal. I normally teach people how to make him bark and then I can track him around the party! Fatso knows how to work a crowd. Loving the two Rotties trying to be lapdogs. -

Poor dog, rather than fix fences they'll give it away. I hope she finds a good home that will help her become the best dog she can be. -
Hank used to get an afternoon walk. If I went to the bathroom anytime after 330 he would stand at the door barking and hooning. Made it kind of hard to resist though so I guess he had me trained.

Jake watches TV and barks at all the dogs, Jyst looks interested if it's an Attenborough with other animals. He dies get huffy if I pick up my phone to look at stuff. Can't think why the game Woukd be different, does the screen flash it have interesting creatures in it?

There's akways that one curly coated kid..... It's hard to know how to draw the line. I'm often asking Jake to walk quietly past dogs that are growling and yapping at him. Maybe the curly coated butt sniffer is being incredibly rude but how do you tell what's normal ie be rude back or reactive? -

Why do people find treat training your dog so offensive. I get a lot of comments about giving Jake peanut butter when he's near another dog, I understand that to many people he's behaving badly and I'm rewarding him. They haven't seen where he's come from so they don't know it's actually an improvement so I just smile and nod. This evening I was on the side of the road doing our dinner training. Just a bit of basic obedience and giving him his kibble as reward. He was in a sit stay with me about 5m away (on a long line). This man crosses the road and asks me how I will control my dog when I run out of treats. Nope I never will, I have a huge bag at home. Well he says your dog isn't "really" obedient. His dogs do what they're told all the time because their reward is not to get a wallop if they don't do it. Yep, that's those imaginary dogs you're walking right now. I just wonder why people feel so negatively about using treats in training. Good thing was Jake didn't budge the whole time I was entertaining the opinionated windbag. -

Well I guess you're probably better off just moving on. It would seem that all you can do is invest more time and aggravation at this point. It just seems that since it's the second offence the owner has learned how to deal better with council than his dog. I'm going to visualize the fleas of a thousand camels infesting his armpits and hope it reaches him. Karma. -
Haha that's ok, happy to be mistaken as the owner if a normal dog. Even if it is only on the Internet. I do think a muzzle would give everyone peace of mind and let people know to back off. This dog does have a loving side, she's ok with cats and can go to a training class. She's able to handled by a stranger. That's all positive. Yes she did nip a tradie, he was alone in the house. The dog had know way of knowing he wasn't a burglar. On the continent this dog was originated on that is considered desirable behaviour. Her size is against her and bouncing her through homes probably isn't a good idea. However if the owners wish to explore different options then I think they might find it do able abd they might also come to see some positive aspects. I certainly wouldn't look for another norty dog but I dont regret taking on my boy. Sometimes the hardest things you do make bring you a deep appreciation for life.

Pets Behaving Perfectly....(humans Not So Much....)
hankdog replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mmmm I left Jake in hubby's care while I went to get groceries. He is DA and has sep Anx so he's always left in care of someone and is supposed to be behind to locked gates. Came home and found OH snoring on the couch with the dog locked out the front. He was sitting on the bench besieged by baby ducklings who believe since he hangs out with me when I feed them that he is able to fetch them food. Luckily the one gate was locked and he doesn't mind ducklings. And that folks is why OH was never left in charge of the kids. -

Mostly because council can now tick the box that says we did something, I get a paycheck and no liability and don't have to make anyone do anything too hard. So let's wait and see if the dog attacks a small dog? Good idea. Hopefully the small dog is attached to a large person and not a child or frail person or me. If it's me I'd sue the pants off council. It's about time someone did hold them accountable. I don't know why but I'm ridiculously cranky over this. And there are many dogs who might pass a temperament test that should be classed as dangerous because they have stupid owners! -
It's not all doom and gloom. You need to out aside all the thoughts that you know anything about digs and start learning about aggressive dogs. It's quite fascinating and the more you read the more you will be able to recognize triggers and know what actions to take. You may find you have a highly trainable dog who you enjoy working with. You could find yourself getting into dog sports or training with a whole new outlook on dogs and their place in society. See this as an opportunity to explore the unknown. Yes it may not be for you but give it a go. What do you have to lose?

The Most Important Thing I Know About Dog Training Is....
hankdog replied to hankdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, my Jake is the super human trainer. I do everything he wants, including let him sit in the creek at dog training this morning after I had just washed him and all his gear. Just because he told me he would behave if I let him wallow in mud. He behaved just enough better to make me let him do it again! -

I thought all dogs were supposed to not escape your property and be on a leash in public. So he gets away with nothing. I guess at least there is now a second case on record and the dog is shown to be escalating. I wish there was some legal comeback on the councils when they let dogs go free. If there's a third incident then there should be a case that council can be held partially responsible. Same as in the case of Hugo, if there's an incident then those that were responsible for making the decision to allow him to be released should be accountable. -
That's a big dog to manage, I can imagine it would be very stressful. Unfortunately with so many healthy dogs with normal behaviour looking to be rehomed I think her chances of finding a suitable home are quite slim. She does sound like she has potential for behaviour change but this would require ongoing work with a professional. It's a financial, time and emotional investment. The way I view my situation with my probably never rehabilitated dog is that I would be more unhappy with myself for putting him to sleep than I would be relieved by ending my stress of managing him. The decision is by how I feel and whether I can responsibly manage him, it's irrespective of his rights or guilt or anything. You need to make the right decision for you and if you keep going with her you have to review that decision regularly. My own view on your situation would be to not try pass the problem on. Again my opinion only, everyone deals with these difficult decisions in the way they can cope with. Eta. My boy is on Prozac, it is his lifesaver and probably the reason he is still here.

Introducing New Puppy To Your Older Dog.
hankdog replied to suziwong66's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think a pen for escape is a good idea. I have a freaked out dog and it's postulated that since he was the younger of a pair that landed in the pound it's possible that his older mate constantly tried to play with him and since he had no flight option he had learned that fight was a good idea since a puppy. I've been told by a few behaviourists this is a common problem with second dogs. Goid luck, would love to know how it goes. -
For me it would be "never ask your dog to do something he doesn't know" wisdom from Steve Courtney. Recently whilst trying to navigate traffic in a Spanish speaking country someone yelled at me from the side of the road. Despite knowing there was an oncoming car I stopped and stared at him trying to decode what he was saying. He was telling me to hurry up but had actually made me stop. How many times have I been exasperated when my dog has just stared at me unmoving when I've asked him to do something. Not belligerence just trying to work it out, He might know this command but he's lost without the context, or I've asked him in a different tone or he's just forgotten. What's the most important thing you keep in mind when dealing with your dog?

What Do You Say When You See A Dog Being Mistreated?
hankdog replied to BarbedWire's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yesterday there was a very timid, young cav x tied outside the shops. I stopped to sit on the bench next to her to have my coffee and she came to sit with me. She was tied with about 3m of rope. I noticed a large tick in her head so I hung around to see if the owner in some way needed help to see or remove the tick. When the woman turned up I pretended to notice the tick for the first time. "Lovely dog, oh what's that on her head?" "A tick." "Oh, did you want me to remove it?" "No, it'll fall off by itself." "Oh have you poisoned it?" "No, they only drink a small bit and then fall off." "Oh, couldn't it make her sick?" "No, it's been there for a few days and she's fine." I do hope that ticks' babies go on to infest the woman's nether regions! -

Mmm think I might get that dvd. I realise that I've been trained to give out treats for being quiet after a brief stint of barking. He's been a little obvious about it now that I've had time to be in the veggie patch and away from my machines. He'll wait for anything to come down the road then give a few test barks and then look meaningfully at me. So now he's only getting treats for no barking but that's kind of tricky because if he never "not barks" then he just gets cranky and winds up getting genuinely hysterical. We went to the pens today and I had as a goal to walk one complete side no barking. Everytime he erupted I just turned and walked back to the start. He's very expressive when he's trying to work out stuff. He would bark, look at me, at the treat bag, nudge, bark etc. it's a different bark from his frantic "real" bark. Such a smart dog! We eventually did it but then a dog walker turned up with a hoard of littlies so we bolted for the car. As a bonus I did get to watch a fawn frenchie playing with a Samoyed on the main field when I was leaving. -

Yea that coukd be a problem, even a non reactive dog might go for him out of sheer surprise. It's always hard to approach people and seem critical. I was told it's always better if you can make it seem your fault, maybe mention how startled Didi got and wouldn't it be awful if his little face got ripped off. They may have not thought of it since they will never actually see him do it. Raineth I wouldn't have been happy having my photo taken, how presumptuous of them. The big dogs do seem to invite a head thunking from strangers. I guess they catch people's attention and they're easy to reach. It's rude though.
