A MAN beat two dogs with a piece of timber to save a husband and wife from an horrific attack at Somerton Park last night.

The couple were walking their pet schnauzers on the Esplanade when the unleashed Staffordshire terriers set upon them near the intersection of Phillipps St, about 5pm.

Glenelg Football Club great Fred Phillis, an Esplanade resident, witnessed the dogs running towards the couple who he believed to be aged about 40.

“These dogs started mauling the people with the schnauzers,” Mr Phillis said.

“They pushed her over and were all over her and she was screaming.

“I went inside (my property) and got a lump of tree branch I was keeping for intruders and I went over there and whacked their heads.”

Mr Phillis said he had to hit the dogs about four times each with the 1.5m piece of timber before they gave up the attack and ran away bleeding.

The owners of the terriers were nowhere to be seen as a crowd of about 12 people gathered to help the couple, Mr Phillis said.

“The lady was absolutely distraught,” Mr Phillis said.

“It was a traumatic.”

He said lady had injuries to her legs and was very shaken by the incident.

Mr Phillis said she left the scene in an ambulance but he was unsure if she was taken to hospital.

Mr Phillis, who has campaigned for tighter dog controls, said he regretted not killing the dogs and called for them to be put down.

“I also enforce my call for better and stronger management of dogs, and harsher penalties for owners not obeying the appropriate laws,” Mr Phillis said.

“The dogs need to be on a leash.”

Holdfast Bay councillor Tim Looker said owners needed to be responsible for their pets.

“The council can have all the bylaws it likes but if owners are negligent or irresponsible, these laws don’t work,” Cr Looker said.

“I think any dangerous dog should be put down after an attack.”

Cr Looker had sent details of the incident to the council’s administration.

“I know from a legal point of view the council is doing all it can but ultimately it comes down to the owners,” Cr Looker said.

He encouraged anyone who had been attacked or felt threatened by a dog to report it to the council.

“It is worth reporting so we can get accurate details and build a better picture of what’s happening and act accordingly,” he said.

Holdfast Bay chief executive Justin Lynch said the dogs involved in the attack were known to the council.

“The council is taking this incident very seriously and we have immediately arranged meetings with all parties to investigate it thoroughly,” he said.

“It seems, from eyewitness accounts, that these dogs were not under effective control.

“We are still gathering information but the council is taking this matter up with the owners immediately and this situation will not be allowed to continue.

“Public safety depends on responsible owners and positive dog ownership, including appropriate socialisation, obedience training and control.”

That poor woman must have felt so helpless with her young children right there. The people that came to her aid deserve a medal! and I think she has an extremely generous attitude toward the owner of the attacking dog.

THE courage of a bystander has saved a 14-week-old Scottish terrier after it was attacked by another dog outside the Aldinga Beach Primary School.

Natalie Cardinal was waiting to pick her son, Riley, up from the school last week when her dog, Isla, was attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier.

Tim Pascoe was waiting to pick up his children from the school when her saw the dog attack. Mr Pascoe ran more than 50 metres to grab the attacking dog and prise open its jaws, which were locked around the neck of the little dog.

Mrs Cardinal said she was holding her eight-month-old son, Oscar, and had four-year-old daughter, Marley, in a pram, when the dog leapt from the window of a parked car and raced towards Isla.

“We were standing at the school gates and Isla went to have a drink of water from a puddle,” Mrs Cardinal said.

“The other dog did not even make a sound, it jumped out of the car window and was on her neck.”

She said the dog grabbed Isla by the throat, severing an artery in her neck.

“The blood was squirting everywhere, I couldn't do anything, I tried pushing the dog away,” Mrs Cardinal, of Port Willunga, said.

“Two people rushed to me and came to my aid and wedged the other dog’s jaw open to get it off.

“Isla dropped to the ground in a puddle of dark blood, I thought she was gone.”

Mrs Cardinal said she grabbed a plastic bag from her pocket and wrapped it around Isla’s throat to stop the bleeding.

A parent drove her to a vet in Aldinga, where Isla was operated on for about two and a half hours.

“He managed to get her through that, but we thought she would die of shock overnight, she didn't and we brought her home two days later,” she said.

Mrs Cardinal was critical of the owner of the Staffordshire bull terrier, saying he did “too little too late”.

“I did not know any of the people that helped me,” she said.

“The guy who pulled the dog’s jaw apart had all scratch and teeth marks all over his hand.

“The school community got her through, if they weren’t there she would not have survived.”

She said she understood there was no destruction order placed on the other dog and the owner would be fined.

“I am not asking for him to lose his family pet, but it should be muzzled when it is out in public, even when it is in his car he should have it under control.”

What an awful experience for the poor puppy owner and the people who came to its defence. Pity about the glaringly obvious breed ID error. I am quite certain that is a West Highland White Terrier puppy and not a wheaten Scottish Terrier puppy.

You have to keep going straight if you are travelling at speed and an animal comes right out in front of you. If you run through it in your mind you prepare for if it happens. I've swerved when safe to do so and just braced and gone straight when I've had to as well.

Yes this. I have always been taught to stay on the bitumen at all costs and stay straight and brake straight. And I have hit things at speed several times. If you swerve at high speed you tend to overcorrect and lose control, or go straight off the road into a tree, or get onto the gravel verge and over you go.

In reference to the op, it sounds as if another car traveling in front of the motorbikes swerved to miss the parked car at the last second leaving the motorbikes with little time to react to such an unexpected thing.

I have used JetPets at least a dozen times to fly dogs and puppies of all sorts, and never had anything but smooth flawless service backed up with friendly and thorough customer service. It's a shame that others can't say the same thing.

Last weekend I was running Gruf out at the old place and I was walking directly into the sun so I couldn't see properly.......when I happened to notice him standing as stiff as a board looking away in the distance. yep....2 roos hopping away a hundred metres or so away. he stood and watched and watched but a low strong 'HERE, NOW' and he turned tail and ran to me. I know the relief!

My dogs get their puppy vaccs (if acquired as puppies) and their first adult booster, and then never vaccinated again.

The dog I just adopted at 10 months old. I have no idea if he was ever vaccinated as a puppy, but he had a C5 prior to adoption and I have no intention of ever vaccinating him again.

Once it's in there, it's in there!

Sorry if I was confusing. I meant it would be a shame if the dog couldnt be assessed for it's potential for training and working in ring sports before it is desexed. I was not basing my comments on the potential for this dog to be assessed as a stud.

If the dog is generally of poor nerve or turns out to be a cripple, then I doubt anyone would have a problem with it being desexed.

But it needs to be assessed first.

Wow really people. Doesn't the saying 'exceptional circumstances' spring to any one else mind. If the dog goes to what sounds like a really good fitting home, and turns out to be an asset to not only the owners, but the community and the breed as well, why the heck cant the dog be assessed and then a decision made. If the dog is desexed and misses out on the opportunity to at least be assessed for it's working potential, shame on everyone. JMHO.

An exciting animal with an exciting potential could all be ruined because of a freaking desex contract. Normally I would also argue it to the end if it were some cross breed or unpapered pure breed but this is definitely what I consider exception circumstances.

Have a look at Geib. I use their scissors and thinners at work and love them. Clipper world have thinners from the Geib Gator range for $73

Funny how any discussion on shears highlights how personal it all is. I LOVE Geib shears, especially the gators. Such a good solid all round salon scissor IMHO........but I hate the thinners in that range!

Steve they are artery forceps that we sometimes use to get hair out of ears. They don't cut hair!

Oh and also forceps are nifty for attaching bands of hair bows to hair!

I just threw some brand new ones out because they were junk! They were the Dubl Duk Gold ones look same as the Roselines but absolute junk!

Personally I use Roseline single sided Thinning shears. I think they are 6.5 inch 46 tooth. The code on the shear is 82193. You can pick them up for approx $100, sometimes less.

I have tried expensive brands, bigger shears etc but I go back to my little rose lines every day to shape faces, detail golden retrievers, bulk thin etc etc. I use them for everything and can't find anything I like better. They last me very well even with daily salon use. In 28 yrs I have only replaced twice, so three pairs!

I left my camera at home again this week. Just need to concentrate on work and trying to settle this dog into our weird lifestyle. After a slightly wobbly start this morning he has been very good all day at work so far. One Poodle to groom yet. Late finish then a walk, if it's not pouring!

Hi! Here is your daily dose of new dog.....and friends.

Apologies for the boring picture overload but starting this new drug has me majorly on edge and I have no one to talk to about it so I need the distraction. Dog had another play date this arvo with Mr.Shivers out at my old place. Went better with Mr.S being a little less of a turnip today! we were joined by another puppy for a while too. A Staffy/Pei/Cattle Dog mix of sorts about 4 or 5 months old. I didn't let my guy off lead while she was there as she was a little hesitant about his enthusiasm. They had fun just not over the top fun just yet. Once everyone has met a few more times and the other puppy matures a bit we can have a free for all.

Mr.Shivers is the little black dog and the other puppy is the tan smooth coat.

Oh, and what does it mean that he has perfect colours to practice ??

I am now thinking of starting a breeding kennel business breeding dogs (and maybe cats) that are specially trained to sleep on their owners chests and wake them if their breathing stops, or even pummel on their chests if necessary, to revive them in an emergency. They will be fitted with devices that sends a code to 000 for help if they pull a special string That they are trained to pull in emergencies too.

So much more comfortable than a machine. Much more partner friendly too.
