  1. I think it's very important to consider your lines with JRT as there are differences in temperament- although not directly linked to coat type.

My breeder had a litter that consisted of 2 rough coats, one broken coat and one smooth coat- all with gorgeous temperaments because the parents were amazing. I would go back to her for another JRT in a heartbeat- we got everything we wanted and more with our rough coat from her.

  2. My youngest dog is an ACD who is nearly 11 months old- unfortunately confined after surgery for elbow dysplasia. While we're feeling pretty unlucky at the moment, we are lucky that she has come from a breeder who bred an excellent, true ACD temperament and that we've spent so much time training her- makes the confinement easier for everyone.

Interesting the thoughts on reds vs blues- it's not something i have noticed but i think you would need a really large sample of blue and red dogs, different sexes to see whether the reds are a bit sharper.

  3. I have plenty of experience with Cattle dogs and their derivatives.

The thing that people need to understand about ACD's is that generally speaking they are dogs that are quick to react. When i say react i'm not referring to aggression, i'm speaking in the true sense of the word- they are quick to react. So when not socialised well, trained and managed well- this tendency to be quick to react can lead to aggression or other problematic behaviours. They are also extremely intelligent so problem behaviours in some other dogs that might take 10- 100 repetitions to become a bad habit, an ACD will only need 2-3 reps to end up with the same outcome. Before owners have even realised what's happening they have a serious problem.

Honestly- most people shouldn't have Cattle dogs. Most people aren't quick enough to react themselves and coupled with a dog that is quick can create problems.

But a WELL BRED, ACD in an experienced home is absolutely awesome and we would always have them in our life.

I have had people ask me the difference between a border collie, kelpie and ACD. I use the following analogy as part of my explanation- hopefully i don't offend anyone and it's not meant to be taken literally- not suggesting anyone goes around poking dogs...

Poke a border collie and they'll giggle

Poke a kelpie and they'll bounce around saying 'yeah, lets go'

Poke an ACD and they'll simply stare at you and say seriously 'DON'T'

  4. Can someone please link the evidence for the stat that the incidence of HD is 73% higher in dogs that have been desexed early? What about female dogs being desexed early?

While not a magic bullet at all desexing CAN make a difference to some behavioural problems and does make a difference to how well dogs are received in situations like dog parks etc which many owners wish to frequent.

  5. My Jack Russell terrier (Gilbert) has an excellent temperament- IMO very much a correct JRT temperament.

Taking what was there and moulding it from the day he came home has created a dog that would not be out of place in a variety of dog sports if we so desired AND is an exceptional pet/ companion.

Terriers are of course different to gundogs and herding dogs. BUT a correct JRT temperament IS suitable for performance if the owner/ trainer knows what they're doing and does it from the start.

Conformation is important too- Gilbert has structure that allows him to run all day and look effortless while doing it- you need the complete package for performance, same as with horses.
