  1. The belly band. Cant imagine them training with this, so it would only ever be used by me. Being brutally honest. Ive been giving him the cold shoulder, till he sits, mark/reward. we have around 90% obedience to "sit" cue now. But he's up in a second! Need duration.
  2. I am in Melbourne too never seen it sold. So made my own alternative: 1 x bottle of human nail biters - "Stop n Grow" product. roughly 20mls of product id guess at. ie. small bottle. Mix with water, in a spray container. Making up 500mls of liquid chew deterrent. Very effective. NB: Chilli oil: no effect at all with my pup, loves the stuff, and eats chilli's from the plants, as she was introduced to it young.
  3. Whilst my son's dog is not a pup, he's five now, this is a behaviour that has occurred since he was a pup. Pees when he sees me. And wondered about suggestions to work on this?, as opposed to manage this, which is what i currently do. Situation: When i go visit at son's house, the dog gets very excited barking at door, running to window to look out (and there is a puddle here occasionally if im not fast enough), comes back to barking at door as i am walking up the front drive. I open the door and call the dog outside, and it pee's whilst excitedly greeting me. So the urine goes on the ground, my shoes etc, n not over their lounge room floor. I have the dog sit, and feed him treats for being calm, then we go in together. Pee greeting complete. Different situation: Dog comes here to my house for doggy day care once a week. Comes in, gets just as excited, as he's greeted by my 3 dogs, who love having mates over for play dates. They all charge into the yard, to play/greet. He doesn't pee indoors here? appears just as excited, but no peeing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  4. Yes i use a comb. A human comb, Im going to try to get it out today with using a conditioner you leave in as suggested. I have a day off, he has a marrow bone, we will meet on the deck at lunch time and get cracking. and if it doesnt work, i have scissors. I will cut the darn thing out if i have to, but would rather groom it out, so he keeps his trousers. I had him groomed professionally about a year ago. He came back groomed AND clipped! I remember being furious with groomer, as never did i mention clipping him. He looked like an old english sheep dog at the back end, not a GSD shape at all. I didnt think you were supposed to clip double coated dogs?
  5. My older GSD, is a stockman coat. the back feathers on his back left leg, are constantly getting dreadlocks in there. He is no longer able to self groom the back end due to arthritis, and i never realised how much they actually groom themseleves! till they are too old too anyhow. Is there a product, that will help prevent this? Im doing preventatives: grooming that leg daily, detangling each knot. Takes about 20 mins per day on the one leg. The terrain he is on is bush like, and swimming in damn daily. Hence needs redoing daily. But wondered if there is a preventative product, or to have his feathers removed on the back legs by groomer. Are there any groomers of long haired GSD's with recommendations here?
  6. You could of been closer, which would of shortened the session, reduced the likelihood of mistakes occurring on the way back to you. But i thought he went fantastic, especially as this was his first experience of swimming!
  7. did a disasterous track on friday, totally off his game. We crossed a wombat den/surrounds. Didnt see it till we were on it together. Maybe that's too big an ask, cross tracks in early days. I'll keep on keeping on. We'll get a good day next time perhaps. Managing about twice weekly so far.
  8. I have breeders ok with my chosen name:) He's going to send the QLD register papers, as soon as he receives them, generally at 11 weeks of pup age, 3 weeks after i get pup. We clarified what i am seeking, an pup suitable for IPO work. And that IF there is a choice in gender, i will take a male as first choice, but outside of that, im not overly fussed on its gender. It will travel in a crate with another pup flying to Victoria. Though breeder says pup will behave as if its reared in airports it will be so confident. < we'll see eh? Only 7 weeks left of a 18 months to wait, and now im running out of patience fast! Removed the lighting in the garden this weekend. I'll miss my lit up garden:( but it will come back out, when this pup is passed the chewy phase:)
  9. I am tracking with my dog, using food. and trainer and i noticed last week (very hot day, dog not working well) that he was mucking about, mind all over the place, but seemed to improve as tracking progressed. And its been happening for a couple of weeks now. ie. becoming a habit im reinforcing? So advise was: practice longer serpentine track to capture/mark/reward more of the correct tracking behaviour, change food i am using for higher value, longer intro up to track start, using the distance to settle the dog into calm focus mode, drop food on floor as approaches start to get his nose down. Block anything other than correct. Correct = he can move forward. Do not feed the night before, and that meal is on the track in the morning. (This is Foot Step Tracking IPO. With food in most footsteps. 2 scent articles. ie. beginner level). Track is 30 mins old. Any suggestions for how to have him work earlier in the piece? to have the first 10 meters with focus?
  10. I will ask the breeder "if its possible" can i have the chosen pet name registered. Its same name for male or female. I certainly wont cry about it if i cant have the name or give the breeder grief:) However top dogs are not always easy dogs and can be challenging for a novice to deal with. I know! I think im ready. My trainer assures me im ready for this challenge, as my 6 and 9yr old working line demo's i can do it. I have to say that I think you need to work and work hard on getting a good relationship going with the dog's breeder. No one will know the challenges you're likely to face in raising and training this pup better. Im sure he has much knowledge to impart should he chose to. But he's too busy to respond to emails. thankfully, i am blessed to have great trainers to assist me on this journey:) Training a very high prey drive dog, to live as a calm pet, is something i specialise in:) all my dogs have off switches. Or id of killed them off i reckon. Lit up when out, couch potatoe when at home is what i like and have so far had. famous last words lol
  11. pup is not rare. But not common. But having found my top dog in Aus IMO, after watching trial after trial where it clean up the trophies. I want one of the pups from THAT dog.
  12. Thank you for the replies, and tips;) microchip register, ive got the hang of. this is going to be dog number 3 in our house. Wanted to get a pup before the others are too old to enjoy it. So sounds like it may/may not come with papers. I think i shall ask breeder, if it can be named KENNEL NAME/my chosen name. for dog on papers. Seems like a reasonable ask to me. Breed specific clubs: I live rural, finding A club was very hard. I had a choice of 3, within an hours drive. Visited. Left knowing that style of training is not for me. And i don't own dogs that would enjoy that style. Each to their own though, its good to have choice out there. Want to do obedience, agility, tracking events when pup is old enough. Mainly been going it alone, and happy with the outcome. But now i have a pedigree! i can enter stuff! And meet others who are dog nuts for the social aspect. Id really love to have some service, that would lay tracks for me! so i only had to do the track once lol
  13. Firstly, learn what all these initials mean! As my pup wont be here for 8 weeks, its a very large but small puppy goal list: Focus - on me Relationship and bond between us Establish pup in our pack of dogs safely Triangle of temptation from day 1 onward Have fun together Toilet training Use training record Socialization/desensitizing to animals; ducks, geese, cows, sheep, grandchildren Crate training, including car traveling in crate to club twice weekly Camping trips Recall Sit Drop Stand Heeling/find the left leg The "out" on command Rear end awareness BH ready @ 6 months lol
  14. I am awaiting my pup, that is due to be born next week. Its being flown interstate to me at 8 weeks. I wanted to know, never having had a papered dog before, when/how do i receive papers, and what do i have to do with them? Such a newbie question! but have never owned a real pedigree before, as in one with papers. Imagine knowing nothing! that's where i am at with how to end up with a dog, who's pedigree papers are in my name?
