  1. I think its hard when you first get a new pup (especially going from 1 dog to 2) because if you have an especially close relationship with your first dog you are afraid to see that relationship change - and I think it does change in a way. The love you have for them doesnt, but your family structure does. I dont have any children but Im guessing that it happens for parents too when they add a new baby to their family. They dont love their first child any less but the new baby demands a fair amount of their attention! I have 3 dogs and we got our newest pup (Zeus) 4 months ago. I am very close to my middle dog (Kirra) who is 6 years old. I still feel like shes 'missing out' to a certain degree because I have to focus so much of my attention on Zeus. Its just the way it goes. I still wouldnt go back to having 1 dog - I have 3 separate and different close relationships with each of my dogs now
  2. Is it just frozen raw camel and sweet potato? Im slightly excited if it is - I didnt know you could get that from City Farmers! I have wanted to try Camel for my dogs but cant find anywhere close that has it
  3. Thanks eveyone - geez, Ive learnt more here in a couple of days than Ive learnt anywhere else!! You are all awesome! Ok, today I gave RAW a shot and tried one of my other lenses. I think the shots turned out ok Here are some - one of my pups Zeus (Amstaff x Bull Mastiff) and one of his friends - my Mums dog Jack (Tenterfield Terrier x) http://www.flickr.com/photos/34919246@N08/3428499186/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/34919246@N08/3427688649/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/34919246@N08/3428495488/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/34919246@N08/3427684977/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/34919246@N08/3427682989/
  4. Oh, really? So maybe it really is me!? I never thought of that..... I just turned the brightness up on my screen for a start off - I usually have it turned down quite a bit because it hurts my eyes... Now Im going back looking at my pics to see! How do I find out if my monitor is calibrated properly?
  5. Thanks I have never shot in RAW and I dont think I know how to do it I am usually pretty close to the subject with that lens - maybe that is making a difference. I usually use AV mode Heres some examples of shots: NOT at all a nice photo but an example of how I think the colours dont look too nice. This was taken on a sunny day under the patio and this is fuzzy - but that could be just me doing something wrong! But I think this one is ok?
  6. Well, I guess in all honesty its not really Its more likely to be my skills as opposed to my camera Lots of my shots end up looking a bit 'muddy' and not as sharp as Id like - also the colour doesnt seem as 'bright' as it should be. Some are fine though. I might need to experiment a bit more with some of the lenses I have - I tend to just use the same one all the time, even though I own 4 of them. I use a 60mm macro one so I can get close up photos of the dogs but maybe Id be better off using something else. It seems that I have great difficulty getting enough light to get a fast shutter speed going - even outside unless it is ultra sunny so I have to keep putting my ISO up....... So maybe its me not the camera!
  7. That is true - I know that sometimes I look at someones photos and go 'wow they are awesome' what camera do you use? and its the same as mine - or a model down. Then I have to go 'oh, mine should be that good - no excuse!'
  8. Now thats a good idea Is it true that good lenses are much more important than the actual camera body? Ive heard that but wasnt sure on other peoples opinions
  9. Now that would be useful - I'd most certainly fork out for one of those
  10. Thanks guys - theres a place you can rent lenses from isnt there? I thought maybe that would be a good idea so I can get the feel of some of them - especially weight wise - to make sure Im comfortable?
  11. Tess, I love your photos on your website - they are amazing Did I see you use a EF 70-200mm f/4L lens? If you do, do you have the image stabaliser one? I was looking at getting that lens but wasnt sure whether the IS was worth it.... Ruthless - I have just seen some of your photos in the photo section - beautiful!! You are very talented!
  12. Huh? What does this mean? Sometimes when you use autofocus some lenses are slightly 'off' so with this feature you can fine tune each lens to give the best focus possible Someone else might be able to explain it better than that though!
  13. Excellent, thanks Tess I didnt realise about being able to adjust the auto focus on lenses - that would be quite useful
  14. Hi all I currently have a Canon EOS 400D which is now about 4 years old. Im thinking about upgrading to a newer Canon model (want to stay with Canon as I have 5 Canon lenses) but cant decide between the EOS 40D and EOS 50D. It looks like the 50D is about $600 more - does anyone know whether its worth it? Ive read a few reviews and mostly the information seems to be 'not much different from the 40D' but Im not convinced! Help!
  15. Yes, I have the same problem with my pup - he loves snails! Im sure he knows I find it disgusting - he can now look straight at me totally innocent with a snail hidden in his mouth! Hey - I never thought of that - I have bearded dragons, I wonder if they would eat snails? Might have to do some research! and Mokhahouse - "snail snack" I love it
  16. Yes, it could, beef is one of the more common allergens when it comes to food - but then, so are some types of grains which will be in the dry food. He could also be reacting to the grass or any number of things. Maybe try taking out the beef and replacing it with something else instead - chicken, goat, lamb etc first and see if it makes a difference. Beware that it could take a few weeks to know whether that is making a difference or not though. If that doesnt work you could get your vet to rule out things such as mites or mange, then it really is worth getting a referral to a dermatologist - allergies are really hard to work out on your own
  17. I had that same situation with the antihistamines I give one of my dogs - I used to buy them from the vet for $80 until one lovely vet told me that they were exactly the same as some of the 'human' antihistamines and I could get them from the local chemist. She gave me the names of the brands that were ok for dogs and Ive been buying them there for $14 ever since....
  18. Yes, reactions can happen after the first vaccination (my dog did), but of course less vaccinations will reduce reaction statistics - a dog is at risk of reacting each time you vaccinate, therefore if you use a 'minimum vaccination' program your dog is at less risk. Sorry to everyone that I havent sent the AVA newsletter with info re titer testing yet - I have it right in front of me but my stupid scanner will not work!!! I'll scan it at work tomorrow
  19. You need to double check though, as I suspect she did not articulate the situation very well to you (and I find it occurs frequently enough unless you specifically clarify with them whether they are saying your dog would be covered for nothing at all, regardless of whether the issue was, say, a car accident wound - heaven forbid - or some other completely unrelated veterinary event). I would be highly surprised if it is as you understand it. Hi Erny, I was told this a while ago too. I was just looking at the policy disclosure for "Petplan" on their website and it says they do not pay for: "Any dog not vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, kennel cough, leptospirosis (in areas where it is prevalent and Vets recommend vaccination) and parvovirus. " It doesnt appear that they are saying they wont cover for certain things, its saying they wont insure these dogs at all (further up the list it says they wont insure APBT's, any of the restricted breeds or any crosses of them or dingo's either ) Not sure which plan willis08 was looking at or if there are some plans that do cover, Petplan was just the first one I came across
