  1. My nearly 14 year old sheltie, who has severe arthritis in her left hip, has been having monthly pentosan injections for a year and daily metacam, plus Melrose Fish oil. Understandably she no longer chases anything and is remarkable given her age and disability.

  2. Can't quite pick up what her nose really looks like but am hazarding a guess it is not Discoid Lupus/Collie Nose. Is it crusty?.

There have been a number of threads here on DOL re DLE, most of which I have replied to but some may have since been archived.

Panda, now 11, was diagnosed with DLE, via biopsy, in 2003. We tried various treatments, sorry can't remember them all, but one was Prednisone injections which I wasn't in favour of. The others were recommended by a Vet at Texas A& M University in the US, which proved to be very expensive.

Long and short story was eventually, my then vet (in NZ) sourced Aristocort, a human cortosteroid cream. (Much cheaper than vet. medications)

Panda has shown NO signs of DLE since. :)

  3. We have been feeding Black Hawk now for two years and are still happy with the results.

Haven't read all the posts re the brown tinge in the coat. We have bi-black shelties (black and white) and the two youngest have a horrible brown tinge over their backs, their mum had the same until she had her first litter. Their Uncle has an intense black coat. This colouring is caused by the tri coming out in the coat colour.

  4. Our dogs have now been on Black Hawk for almost a year. We are really pleased with the condition of their coats, stools etc etc.

Regarding price I think it comes down sometimes to where you are located? We pay $80/20kg bag, but order 4-5 bags at a time as we have 8 dogs and our nearest supplier is a 2.5 hour drive from us.

  5. By the symptoms you have described it sounds as if it could be Demodectic Mange, which a vet should be able to diagnose. Generally they will do a skin scraping and the mites will show up under a microscope. All dog have mites but they flourish when a dog is under stress. e.g. I had a sheltie who had Demodectic mange after she has her first season. We successfully treated it with Demodex.

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) is an auto-immune disease of the skin. It may be referred to as Collie Nose as it often affects Collies, Shelties and German Shepherds. Clinical signs include crusting of the nose. I have had a sheltie with DLE. We treated the nose with Aristocort cream (a human cortosteriod) and kept him out of the sun. He has shown no signs of DLE now for 6 years.

  6. Phone number not on their website but have googled and found a phone number and hopefully we have the problem sorted, especially as we are talking about $456.00 worth of sentinel spectrum. I have 8 dogs here!!, poop they cost me a fortune.

  7. Has anyone purchased from Priceless Pets recently- i.e. in the last month?.

I placed an order, with payment via paypal, on 02 August and have yet to receive my order.

I sent an email on Thursday and have not had a reply. With previous orders they have been received within a few days.

  8. Unfortunately due to work commitments, and health problems, we have a delay with the final preparations prior to printing. I have suggested to Steve that in this instance we refund the monies paid. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment or mis-understandings/inconveniences which have occured in trying to get this publication out before winter. Unfortunately when everything is done on a voluntary basis there are often hiccups along the way, especially when those volunteers are spread throught the country and do not know each other.

We will update again when we have more concrete news.

  9. There appears to be no rhyme nor reasoning behind the decisions of the various councils as to the number of dogs which can be kept, under a breeders permit, and according to the land you have.

We have 40 acres (in Moreton Bay Regional Council), of which our dogs are restricted, by our choice, to either a house yard of around 1/4 acre or to the front garden of around 1.5 acres. Both areas are fully fenced. Both OH and I are retired and more often than not one or either of us is at home. Through habit our dogs are locked inside when we are both not at home, (they are all house dogs) and the most we are ever out for is 6 hours in the day.

We have permission to keep 8 dogs under the breeders permit. We know of a couple of people who are in more of a suburban area (same Council) with less acerage, bigger dogs, and who work full time who have permission to keep 12 dogs. Doesn't compute to me?.:crazy::noidea:
