Hi everyone,
I've been investigating breeds for a number of weeks but I'm starting to think maybe a rescue would be the way to go, and would love some opinions and to see of anyone has anything suitable.
Requirements are as follows -
- not too big. I have a Papillon so don't want a dog that will do any damage
- affectionate - Scooter is quite aloof and I want a dog I can cuddle
- not a yapper! I've trained this out of Scooter but know some dogs are much more likely to bark than others
- I'm a groomer so coat is not an issue, but not after something that is heavy shedding
- a fairly active dog I can do agility with in the future and walk often
- a dog I can TAKE places. Not head-shy, scared of people, timid, likely to snarl etc. Not dog aggressive in any way, shape or form
So uh yeah. I know my list of requirements is extensive but I am happy to wait as long as need be for the right dog. I want the right dog!!
Thanks :)
have a look at a griffon, great little dog that fits all your requiremetns and come in smooth or rough coat. My Mocha loves his cuddles, happily sitting on your lap but then runs around with the other dogs. I don't do agility with him, but have seen griffons do agility. I do know he would be awesome at flyball because he loves fetching the ball and brings it right back to you but there isn't any near us. Loves people and definitely not agressive to other dogs.

what a gorgeous girl and such wonderful memories

it's an absolutely horrible disease, some how we got it in our yard as it was rife in our country town  and lost puppies including 6 out of 7 of my darling girl's litter - first litter that i had ever bred in my 50 years of dog ownership  The pup that survived was so sick for so long but now is going in great strides, he took awhile to start growing and developing but is now thriving in leaps and bounds although he keeps tripping over his feet because they are way too big for him but he will grow into them
and to think all those pups would have been fine if people had just vacinated their dogs  seriously it really is not that expensive for an annual jab, just over a $1 a week!
-
congratulations! That's fantastic!

Once DD's crates are snapped up
I also have another crate willing to give to rescue, from memory it's 24 inches
I'll be in Sydney first weekend in December in Killara, Central Coast over Christmas otherwise I'm in Gunnedah
:)
-
awww she is beautiful, same colouring as my Latte's grandmother. Sounds like the most wonderful home for a coolie too, being someone's constant companion :)
No idea about the crate but if you can find a strong one can you let me know, one of my housemate's coolies has destroyed his totally yet are other coolies are fine. In fact we got two of the pups a cheap crate off ebay and they are sharing it with no problems, mind you they only sleep in it after they have played hard all day
-
okay answer this if crates are cruel for your dog to go in during the day bearing in mind I live on acerage
Latte my very active coolie. Gets up in the morning from her crate, goes outside zooms around the yard at a hundred miles an hour. Her dog brother and sister both of whom she adores and they adore her gets put in a roomy pen out the back having also slept in the house. To get Latte into the pen you have to carry her in there as she absolutely refuses to go in there otherwise and when she does she barks.
If you can't find her to put her in the pen, go upstairs, she follows you and open her crate door and she runs into it and settles down immediately. She stays there until about 4 pm when my housemate gets home. Runs around more for hours, comes inside, is generally pretty tired and will more often than not puts herself in her crate and settles down for the night. Otherwise when the others go to bed she goes immeidately into her crate, settles down and not a murmer
So my question is why does Latte prefer her crate rather than a roomy pen during the day?
-
that's absollutely fantastic! Well done!
-
is it in the same area as the day show in May - Wellington Agriculture Show?
-
there was a stunning White Swiss Shepherd Dog at Gunnedah Dog Show on the weekend
My friend and I were just in awe at him/her, I couldn't recall what their proper name was though so I'm glad that this thread has been posted.
Hope you have a wonderful day!

keep her in the house at nighttime
get one of those glad disposable containers
let dog out in the morning
quickly follow her, and just as she starts to squat put the container under her
get sample, put lid on container.
it used to work for my cavalier when I had to take urine samples
-
I would suggest a cavalier as well, awesome little dogs who also love a game
-
I had a 11 year old maltese and when her life long mate passed on got a golden retreiver pup. It actually gave Daisy a huge new lease of life and she bossed the golden retreiver pup around. I didn't leave them together when I was at work but when home they were and had great games together. She actually was awesome for telling him off too, he was about to bite an electrical cord and I was about to pounce but Daisy got there first and he never went near one again after that.
I'm a bit of a griffon fan, energetic dogs but love a cuddle and know when to have quiet time.
-
I used to cook up a large pot of stew for my dogs, they loved it and cheap as chips
butcher pet mince, large packet of frozen vegies, rice or pasta, if i had one a stock cube, bit of garlic and water
no frills sardines are cheap
Wolfbix biscuits shaped like a bone are cheap and a good bedtime snack for them, from memory they were about $7 a bag but many bone shaped biscuits in it
-
oh what a beauty, gorgeous little pup :)
-
I'd be concerned about an older dog going into a household that's not used to kids especially if it's background is not known
I'd be going the puppy route from a good registered breeder, one that has a family as well so the pup is used to noise etc. If the mum is prepared for the training of a pup and knows it will be hard work, and the support of Kavik it should work out.
My mum swears that she toilet trained me and our daschund at the same time and she had 3 kids under 4
Personally, and I'm probably biased, I'd go the male golden retriever route - just my observation that male goldens are quieter than labs - my opinion only.
-
what a great age for a Great Dane!
RIP Caesar
I'm very sorry for your loss
-
oh Ons, that is just devastating. So sad for you.
Fortunately after a hard week long battle, our little fella is home again.
one of my babies survived too so I'm glad your little fella did :) For over two weeks he struggled and struggled. His immune system was so weak he got mange mites.
But they have now cleared up and he has done all his catch up growing in 3 weeks. He is a wussy boy but very much loved :)
-
she can run free with my darling pups who died from parvo a few weeks ago
it's rife around Gunnedah too
RIP Maggie
-
awww what a lovely dog and a lovely story
I had a little maltese, Daisy, she was the love of my life and sounds like your Daisy in character, so this story brought back bittersweet memories :)
-
RIP Chilli
Hugs to you Indigirl and I'm certain that Chilli is thanking you for being so kind and rescuing her from her demons
Darker Colours In Labs And Grs

my golden retreiver is very dark golden, beautiful colour. She is a beautiful girl but she has got white on her chest, top of the head and around the paws. My understanding is that is why the lighter ones are preferred in the show ring because white is a fault but it doesn't show up in the lighter colours. Her breeder chose the other girl in the litter for the show ring but regrets that decision - my gain though :-) (although I don't show her). My boy golden is very pale.
