Nervous Puppy

My puppy most of the time is friendly and happy for me to pet him but every now and again he seems to get nervous and will retreat under the table for no apparent reason and not let me near him. He's not aggressive, just very shy. Is this normal?

how old is he? most young pups will be a bit shy at times, when he does this what do you do?

best is to be patient and wait a bit before you grab him/her, try useing treats to encourage him out rather than going under the table and getting him, make it so he wants to come to you and when he does, lots of soft spoken praise and a treat, small but yummy. Hogz

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. He'll take the treat most times, sometimes he won't. I'll just leave him under the table until he comes out on his own terms if he doesn't. He's about four months old.

I personally wouldn't use treats to lure him out, treats are a reward and you're reinforcing his shy behaviour. Just ignore him and act totally normal.

Did you socialise him much as a young puppy?

I've only had him about three weeks but I am socialising them as much as possible.

Hi Bomber

Have you spoken to the breeder? A good breeder should be the first port of call as it may be something they have dealt with before and can give you good advice :D What breed of puppy to you have? I know you've had him for 3 weeks but you didn't mention puppy's age - it may be important info

Dogs do need their quiet times, especially puppies which tire very quickly. If you are constantly picking the puppy up and/or playing with him he may just want a bit of piece and quiet. Do you have children? Not all puppies appreciate constant attention, really if he wants to lie under the table and not be touched you should leave him there until he's ready to come out. If I were you I'd buy him a crate which he can use as his own private den, he's only a small puppy, maybe it's all getting too much for him.
