I am sure there are several threads about talking to friends who are looking at buying from a breeder who isn't registered...but I can't find any. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I have tried the search engine but no luck.

Thanks :)

Can't help with an old thread but if this person does not test her breeding dogs for PRA (and I bet she doesn't) then your friend is staring down the path of having a dog that's blind at 5.

For a dog that can live to 15+, that's a long time to be blind from a totally preventable condition. :)

She should ask this puppy producer what a patella is - you can bet they won't know and the breeding pair will have shonky ones!!!! See it all the time when I am grooming.

Did I spell patella correctly  Having a senior moment.

Hi mrmac, I've been searching for the following thread (which I came across when I did a google search on something, can't remember what it was) and finally found it:

http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...oss+breed+puppy

It's actually about a poodle x maltese puppy but Jed's post (12.03pm) has some good points about getting any dog from an unregistered breeder. I guess there isn't actually any guarantee that your friend would be getting a purebred poodle anyway, so the whole thread could end up being relevant.

Anyway, I found Jed's post a very clear and matter-of-fact explanation of what you need to consider when buying any puppy from an unregistered breeder. Hope it helps.

Thank you all very much for your tips and for pointing me in the right direction.

Unfortunately, they have bought a puppy. I suspect it is from a puppy farmer. The breeder met them while they were on their way home from a trip with the pup. No photos or info on parents. Puppy is from a breeder in Heyfield Vic.

On a positive note, puppy seems nice enough and has settled in well. I hope it stays that way.
