Strange Skin Disorders In Puppy

Recommended Posts

I am hoping that someone out there is able to help me. I have a 6 month old puppy, and for the last 3 months, we have had all sorts of strange things happening with her. First of all, the hair on the tip of her tail started to fall out, and underneath the skin was scaly and thin. It broke open easily into a sore. Her tail swelled up. Then she started to develpo hair loss around her eyes, and behind her nose. This then continued on to swelling in both areas. Her ears also began to swell and went from erect to down. She was looked at by many vets, who all charged me a fortune and told me what her symptoms were. Like I couldn't see them for myself. She was then treated by another vet who sent a biopsy off and did skin scrapings. The good news was she did not have demedic or juvenile cellulosis, but she had an 'allergy'. Great. She was put onto microlone tabs. The swelling around her eyes and nose have subsided, but yesterday, we found quite a few scaley lumps on her belly and her elbow and under her armpits. They don't seem to be itchy or irritating in any way, but the skin flakes off them when you touch them, and they look as though they could become quite raw. They also look as though the hair aroound them could begin falling out. She is a delightful little dog, not off her food at all, which is holistic select by the way, full of energy and love. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? None of the other dogs I have ever had have ever had anything like this.

Hi,

What breed is your dog ? that may also give us a clue.

It may also be Thyroid related.

It may well be the food you are feeding.

the food she is on is Holistic Select, so food should not be an issue. She is a cattle dog. May be thyroid, didn't think of that.

Well, given the veterinary diagnosis of allergy (and I agree if other tests were clear that it must be some sort of allergy) perhaps going to a Naturopath should be your next step.

Agree with Zayda Asher - dermatologist to actually diagnose the issue.

Be careful about considering natural remedies prior to a proper diagnosis as many of the products a naturopath would use may have the very ingredients which is making your dog react. There are some members here with dogs with bad allergies who have looked at natural remedies for allergies and have found it to be an expensive and ineffective process.

that's very true as well! I have a dog that I have to be very careful with, as he reacts to skin contact with common things like tea tree... you can be trying to make your dog better, but actually be applying the thing that causes the response!

Totally agree, take the dog to a Specialist Dermo. Vet and get a more specific diagnosis and treatment.

You can waste a lot of money on so called 'natural remedies' and also cause more problems with no guarantee of cure (if a cure is possible).

Just because the bag says Holistic Secect does not mean that dog won't be alergic to some thing in the product. :(
