A barking dog saved a sleeping family from a house fire believed to have been deliberately lit in Melbourne’s inner north this morning.

The dog managed to wake a 44-year-old man sleeping in the Coronet Street home in Flemington as flames spread to a bedroom where his three young sons were asleep.

The children, aged four, nine and 10, were led from the home’s front bedroom by their father and 45-year-old mother after the family’s pet came to the rescue.

Police believe someone tried to light the front mesh door of the house then a pram that had been left on the front veranda about 1.30am.

The blaze quickly spread and damaged the veranda and the boys’ bedroom wall.

The family escaped without injury and with the help of neighbours put out the fire.

An arson chemist examined the scene this morning and police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to www.crimestoppers.com.au
