AussieDog Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) I've had a stressful afternoon with my Heeler girl. Was about to walk out the door for a walk when she vomited up a heap of grass but more worrying it had blood in it. There was a fair emount of clear mucas and the blood looked almost like a heap of chopped up chilli pieces (but wasn't of course). I took her straight to the vet but unfortunately without a scope the vet couldn't advise what was wrong. I was sent home with some antibiotics, something to keep the acid right in her stomach and another pill - which i've forgotten what it was for. Eyes are fine, gums are fine, she isn't lethagic, temperature normal. Vet thought she was a "little" sore in the gut - but the vet was poking very hard to get a response. Has anyone else had this in their dog and if so what did it end up being? I hate not knowing. If it happens again or there is blood in the stool i'll go the scope but as it was a weekend and the vet didn't think it was super urgent i choose not too. My dog doesn't, well has never shown any interest in swallowing toys etc. She always has access to toys and balls and has NEVER swallowed a part so i wouldn't think it was a blockage. Any ideas? Staffyluv Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Stomach ulcer perhaps. My old stafford had that a few times and it was a small ulcer. He had acimax to help with the stomach acid thing. If he got bad, I also gave him some mylanta. From memory it was 1ml for every 5kg of body weight. Erny Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) I think the colour of the blood can tell a bit more of a story to those "in the know" here (Staffy Luv and Dogbesotted being just two of the many I know of :)). My boy has occasionally shown small spots of blood when he has vomited. However to me they appeared more as burst blood vessels that were potentially because of the effort and force of vomiting in the first place. The vomit was very much clear liquid (no yellow or froth or bile) mixed with a fair chunk of green grass and scattered through the liquid was bright red/pink blood spot/vessels. They looked identical to the small blood vessel/spots that sometimes if you blow your nose too hard come through in your snot (i know gross). From a distance it looked almost like she had eaten a little bit of chocolate as it was a pale brown colour but on closer inspection and removal of the grass it looked like tiny bits of chopped up chilli - i then got closer and realised it was blood. There was a good amount of it but not I took it to the vet for inspection. Molly has been her normal self - eating chicken and rice, going outside for toilets (no poos yet) and bringing me her toys to play with. She bounces around and still follows our new kitten around like a hawk. She shows no other signs - i have now checked her morning poo and definately no blood - looks (and smells) pretty normal. Her Majesty Dogmad Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 My dog brought up a small amount of blood in a vomit the other day, he'd recently eaten one of those hard chews and I suspect it was that although the chew didn't come up it may have made his gums bleed a little - he's only got 3 teeth but is determined to enjoy whatever food he can. She was a little hazy with her prognosis but did say she thought it was coming from the gut area - but at the same time then said if it was in the gut area it would be a lot darker as it would be older. In the end the consulate was 45+mins and i got confused. In anycase we have had no more episodes of vomit or blood or anything else really to indicate she is sick. She is a little sulky but that could be because i'm molly-coddling her a bit. No the blood would only be darker if it was old blood (an older bleed before the vomit).. It can be bright red, if the bleed was new and pain or something else caused the vomit.. They can't see a stomach ulcer by looking down the dogs throat - they need to put a tube down (dogs need to go to sleep for this)... If this is just the one time, I would let it ride but if it happens again - I would be insisting on further testing. Ollie had a small stomach ulcer and it did bleed a few times - the pain when these open up, can cause vomiting and the blood looked very fresh (almost like small diced up chilli bits)... AussieDog Posted August 19, 2012 Author Share Posted August 19, 2012 Thought I’d put an update here as my poor dog is still vomiting blood and today she also had bloody mucus in/on her stool. We did a stomach scope back in March this year - nothing was found - in fact the vet commented on what a healthy looking stomach she had. Since March there have been about 10 or so incidents of bloody vomit (never any food in the vomit - just some grass). We went back to the vet last week and it was suggested maybe the grass is cutting her stomach causing the blood and i was told to start to feed her breakfast and dinner. Which I’ve been doing. Last Thursday night after dinner Molly ran outside and consumed HEAPS of grass - she was head down for a good 10minutes. Nothing came back up. All grass was in her poo the next day. Today she didn't want breakfast and overall was very "sad" looking. This afternoon i find bloody vomit and the bloody stool. So just back from the vet and we are treating her for severe IBS. If the medication she is on now (antibiotics and something to help with possible stomach ulcers) doesn't work we go to steroids. We are also on RC Hypoallergenic food. If all that doesn't work i either go to a specialist or surgery for a large intestine biopsy. She also has an enlarged lymph node (only one). I'm obviously very worried about my girl and i hope it is just a matter of a change of diet. The "C" word was thrown around but i just can't even think about that for now.
