Age For Puppies To Go To New Home

Back in my youth, it was normal to get a new puppy at 6 weeks of age. Dogs were also allowed to run free with us kids and each other after school... much more socialisation and acceptance back then... and if any of us kids got bitten, we were usually asked what we had done to deserve it...

Times have changed so much - and I don't think all of it has been for the better of dog-human relationships in a societal sense...

Sad news. The rotti died on Thursday she was just shy of 12, so a good age for a rotti.

Looking at getting a puppy and all breeders I've spoken are basically from 8 weeks. This is also mentioned in detail on The Paw Man's facebook page when you search.

I would take puppies at 7 weeks if it was allowed. 6 weeks might be a stretch. I would not take a puppy at all if I couldn't have it by 9 weeks. Critical socialisation period is 6-12 weeks and I want as much as possible of that time to be with me. But I have working breeds and they mature quickly.

I'm fine with 8 weeks, from what I've seen by then mum dogs are happy for pups to leave them alone by then, especially if it's a large litter.

Of course any puppy at any age CAN go on to have a good life with the right care but I think for average pet dog buyers 8 weeks works well.
