Personal Training: Recommendations

Hi,

I'm looking to get a few in-home training sessions to help deal with a slightly wayward 1yr German Shepherd (the main problems being barking outside and leash-pulling). Can anyone recommend good trainers (I'm slightly concerned as I expect the quality and integrity of personal trainers can vary wildly).

I'm based in South Sydney (Newtown).

Home specific issues can be explained to you.

Just to give you an example - personal experience.

I went to K9 Force becouse my dog is dog agressive. I spend some time there and waited for K9 to bring his dog out to see what mine does. He never did. I was somewhat dissapointed.

Only after some time it did sink in........ he didnt need to see it...... he has seen it all before.

What makes K9 different to others?

I dont know I guess the fact that his methods actually work.

As to visit to Peakhurst - of course come along, I can show you stuff for leash pulling thats about it

Yep, although we were running late so didn't get a chance to talk to people beforehand. However, you may have noticed the guy in the introductory class with the completely demented German Shepherd that wouldn't behave :p (It was my own fault, I let her sleep in the morning so she'd just woken up and was full of energy.)

However I should be there regularly now, so I'll say hello at some point.

Yes I have seen a new GSD. Well I think you will be in a white class next week than.

I was the instructor that was not wearing the instructors blue shirt.... to the left hand side of the park near the black 4wd parked uder the trees.

Come and say hello next time. I usually stay afterwards and go for a walk or chat with some people, or let the dogs play (my dobe, malamute, GSD and a whippet are the usual suspects...

I have taken a blue class yesterday and absolutly loved it (a bit higher standard than the beginners, but still with all sorts of problems) so I will try to take that class again.

You will just have to make your way through the classes to get to me quickly :p

Yes, we definitely prefer the club. We had been planning to start attending the group at Leichhart but the park's a bit busy for training really (but great for socialisation).

Yep, the hanging around afterwards is a major part of it, I had a few interesting chats with various people

K9 Force is the best! We travel over three hours to get to see him and no matter what the issue is with anyone of our four dogs he has never failed us yet! He stands out because 1) he cares about dogs (not all trainers do sadly) 2) he is skilled at passing his knowledge on to you, the dog owner. So many trainers can train the dogs but cannot teach the owners to train the dog and 3) his methods work brilliantly! My dogs loved the sessions they have had with Steve and I can honestly say that my relationship with my *problem* dog improved out of sight after just one day spent with K9Force. Please consider going to see him - you won't believe the difference even one session can make!

I am not in NSW but in Melbourne, and i do in home training.

I have been training dogs for over 10 yrs and are a member of northern obed club.

I do puppy training, threw to behavour problem training, i am based in the western burbs but cover all melb metro area......I am only a fairly new business but i garentee you will be happy with my style of training( positive reward based training and trick training)

Tarka - Ruby is :p Great dog. Yes completly disobiedient but very responcive and she will do very well if you keep up with the training.

I must say that for the second lesson you guys were doing great. Well done.

I will not see you next week as Im going to K9's so I hope that in 2 weeks time I will see a dog that only occasionally drags you along ;)

As Myzka and many have suggested, you certainly can't go past any dealings with Steve from K9 Force, whether you feel that the problem is home-based or not. We have just completed a round trip to Steve in Sydney, from Brisbane with our Dobe. Left Brissie on a Thursday, saw Steve Friday and Saturday, and drove back to Brissie on the Monday.......returned to work on Tuesday

I had previously met Steve when he came to Brisbane to do some workshops. Have been following his suggestions and instructions via email, then went specifically to Sydney to do a follow-up. Jeddah started a desensitising programme with Steve and his wonderful GSD, Cane. I can't tell you how wonderful it is as an owner of a fear aggressive dog, to see that same dog running around with a huuuuuuge GSD having the time of her life. Quite an emotional moment......

If I lived in Sydney, I would have a regular appointment with K9 Force.......

It was my husband's first experience in dealing with Steve, and he is now also a member of the K9 Force Cult. Believe me, he's quite a cynic on most matters. :p

Good luck with your training, but I can't recommend Steve highly enough.

[For anyone not following this, I've started going to the Peakhurst club where myszka volunteers as a trainer. She ended up gettng my group and did an excellent basics session, and made some real progress with some problem dogs, mine included.]

Thanks, and yes, I'll be going to Steve/K9Force. I'm now booked into the September workshop (thanks Myszka ), and I'll probably try and get in for private session in November when the OH has more time.

Cane or Cain!?! (A friend tells the story of a GSD he had as child that went feral and had to be put down. "We shouldn't have called it Cain, that was just asking for trouble!" This will make no sense if you don't have a Judeo-Christian background.)
