since last night while my dog was sleeping i noticed that he started to breath heavily. And now ever since he has woken up he has been making this noise which sounds like he is clearing his nose. And he sneezes here and there. He also has a runny nose and looks a bit upset.

Is this a sign of the flu?

A visit to the vet is a must! It will ease your mind and if its anything serious then it can be treated early.

What are the main infectious diseases affecting dogs in Australia?

Canine Parvovirus: A severe and highly contagious disease that effects dogs of all ages, but is most severe in young puppies. It is transmitted to a dog when it comes in contact with faeces from an infected dog. It attacks the gastrointestinal tract and symptoms of the disease include vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain and depression. Dogs can die within 24hrs of contracting the disease.

Canine Hepatitis: Once again it is also a highly infectious disease which can effect dogs of all ages, but puppies are most at risk. Transmitted by ingestion of infected urine, faeces and /or saliva. Symptoms include fever, lack of appetite, diarrhoea, abdominal pain due to an enlarged liver, jaundice, depression and eye lesions. All dogs young and old can die within 36 hrs or contracting the disease.

Canine Distemper: Highly contagious and fatal disease. Transmitted by inhalation of secretions from an infected dog and from contaminated dust. It attacks the nervous system and symtoms initially include fever, discharge from the eyes and nose and respiratory problems, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Canine Cough: Highly contagious.Commonly transmitted by close secretions from an infected dog - possibly in kennels, at dog shows or even at the park. Main causative organisims are parainfluenza (a virus) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (a bacteria). Symptoms include a harsh, dry hacking cough that may persist for weeks, conjunctivitis, tonsillitis and nasal discharge.
