But having gone through osteosarcoma with my last ridgy (who had an amputation and survived) I just wanted to say, I hope everything is okay and if not, just love 'em to the end. I understand how hard it is and what its like to go through. Now I've made myself cry again! :D Have you tried googling it? There would have to be some pretty extensive sites out there! wolfgirl Posted January 10, 2007 Share Posted January 10, 2007 Lea so sorry to hear you have sad news, my heart goes out to you, I have never been through this type of cancer but I lost my mally in my avatar to Osteosarcoma, we tried the conventional medicine but it failed and he also had the limb salvage operation but the cancer still managed to get to his lungs and when I found that out I tried natural alternativemedicine, it gave him a much better quality of life while he was on and it did make a difference to him that rather than the traditional. My girl survived the amputation, had 2 lots of chemo, but 12months later bloat got her - not the cancer! It sure is a heart wrenching ordeal! The main problem we are facing at the moment is a massive build up of fluid in the abdomin which we are attempting to control with diuretic tablets. We were advised to feed a diet which is easy on the liver. I'm using a combination of cooked rice & chicken with Hills l/d but with the fluid build up and the heat we've had lately Charlie often doesn't have much of an appetite. Over the xmas period he went from 8.4kg to 6.2kg in a week. I'd be very interested in hearing about the alternative medicine that others have used. Mojo had a toe removed 12 mths ago from cancer, we also had Mojo's dad, Nelson, PTS because of toe cancer that spread to his lungs, only 6 mths ago. So i am hoping the toe cancer hasn't spread to Mojo's liver. we found a great holistic vet that helped us a lot with nelson and he lived 2 yrs longer then he was given buy the traditional vet. Plus we used holistic medicine from All Natural Vet Care in Sydney (we live in Canberra and liaised with them via phone and our vet here)... As well as his chemo and conventional meds Ollie took the following on a daily basis: 1000mg Vitamin C 1000mg Omega 3 (fish oil) AntiOx Lymphodran He is on some chinese herbs that the holistic vet prescribed for him at the moment... These are suggested based on the type of cancer and how far it has gone... Unfortunately for us, Ollie did not get clear margins with his tumour removal and it has spread via his lymph nodes (they were biopsied). So we are just trying to give him quality of life - the vet will not put a time frame on what we have left because it can vary so much... I am so sorry that you have to go through this with your dog. koolietas Posted January 10, 2007 Share Posted January 10, 2007 My last sheltie died of a suspected liver tumor just on two years ago...(I didn't have an autopsy done - so we're not 100% certain)...but he went into respiratory failure (and his abdomen had also filled with fluid) so we had to have him pts 4 days shy of his 9th birthday ;) About 15 months prior to his passing, his liver enzyme levels skyrocketed, and after several months of conventional treatment (including a liver biopsy, which failed to find anything) the vet suggested having him pts. I couldn't believe that my 7yo sheltie was facing this...so did some research (mainly via the internet) and then consulted with a holistic vet and together, we managed to get on the right path! What we did... * Liver supplement - 'LivaTone PLUS' Oral Powder by Dr Sandra Cabot (you can buy it at most health food shops). This product contains herbs such as milk thistle which are renowned for liver health/support. * Changed his diet from premium wet/dry food to cooked fish (non-oily fish such as ling, dory, flathead, cod etc.) plus cooked vegetables (pumpkin, carrot, cabbage, potatoes etc.) and was fed 2-3 small meals a day (this is better for the liver rather than one big meal per day) * Accupuncture - had weekly sessions to begin with, and as his enzymes dropped, every 3 months (with enzyme check at the same time). Ernie went from having v.high enzyme levels to the lower end of normal levels within a couple of weeks after we made these changes...he also lost weight and his arthritis disappeared. He was a different dog for that last year - the happiest/healthiest we had ever seen him. Although his death was sudden (he'd only been to the vet for a check up the week before he died - and everything looked great then) it was at least some comfort to know that he had felt better for the last 12 months. There is hope! My boy was proof of that...depending on what your vet specialises in...I would definitely recommend seeking out an alternate vet that will support you in changing his diet/accupuncture/herbal treatments etc. My thoughts are with you guys (Nadine & Lea) - I know as many other DOL people do how terrifying that horrible 'c' word is...but you'll be happier knowing that you are doing everything possible for your furkids :D Feel free to PM me if you would like to...it's always easier to talk to someone who knows what you're going through... I am an oncology vet nurse in Sydney and may be able to offer some sort of assistance. My first bit of advise is to get a biopsy...either ultrasound guided or surgical, but you really have to know what you are dealing with before you can decide on the best course of action for you & your dog - wether it be surgery, chemo, alternative therapies or a combo of all treatment types. You should also get a full bloods work up, and 3 view chest rads to check for metastisis. Once you have a histological diagnosis of the tumor, it may be worth while asking for a referral to a veterinary oncologist, even if it is just a phone consult - while most GP vets are great, they are usually not completely up to speed on current treatments and prognosis statistics. Ollie has a veterinary oncologist in Brisbane - once again we liaise by phone to discuss Ollies treatment. Your vet can deal with the oncologist on your behalf if that is what you want to do. We tried both conventional and holistic treatment and I really don't think Ollie would have done as well as he did with the chemo - it can be pretty rough sometimes. Vets are still concerned about the liver and have given us some antibiotics and some steriods, we have to feed him mushy food for a week see if he can keep that down, and if he doesnt seem to get any better, an ulta sound will be done.
