Barf/raw Diet

As far as meaty bones are concerned, I also get roo bones. I usually feed him a chicken carcasses or roo bone in the morning and then I ready made BARF pattie that you can buy plus a turkey neck.

Yes you are right about the offal part. Vegetables are definitely raw. You can also give Ted some natural yoghurt and egg (including the shell).

Obi has taken really well to the diet, he loves all of his food, he is really taken on the roo bones. We have now put in a standing order for turkey necks at the Rural pet food shop @ o'halloran hill. The carcasses and roo bones are from the Central markets. The patties I get are from one of the BARF distributors, there are 12 patties for $15.50. These patties have all the supplements, veggies and fruit in them, and it saves me the time. When I did all my calculations it wasn't really going to cost me more, than what I was feeding him.

When you start Ted on it, there are changes you will start to notice within a week.

Well I hope Ted loves his new diet.

ok so me and Ted are now barfers :mad all seems to be going well (2 days in!!) Ted definatley loves his food more. i used to feed him dry and he would always look at then up at me and be like 'really, this again?' and would take ages to eat it all. now, look out! he loves it :mad eats it all up yum yum!! when he sees me pick up his bowl he gets super excited! and once the food is in (which i can never do fast enough!!), he races outside and sits so fast, its really cute. and he licks his lips :mad not kidding he actually licks his lips when i start lowering the bowl.

just one little hic-up ive noticed he had a bit of diarrhea yesterday. his poop was bit runny this morning too, could it just be the adjustment? i'm still feeding dry at night with some yogurt, fish, egg etc (just until the pack runs out, then barf all the way!!)

mmmm, turkey neck!

enarc, your dog is a labrador, have you ever had weight trouble? my nearly 6 year old has always had weight trouble (too much of it!!) we have a lot of trouble getting it off her. she hardly eats any food, i'm talking half a cup at night and a bone every now and again!! she lives with my parents in the country (i'm at uni and renting small flat, no room for my 'little' darling!!) and they aren't too keen on the barf diet, didn't like the thought of mixing up offal etc. but these patties might be the go. so what i'm wondering is if your lab's has any weight issues on the barf diet, and if his weight is easy to manage? is there a different set of percentage meat/bones/veg/offal for weight issues?

what have been the major changes in your dogs that you've noticed when switching to raw? maddie has 'sore feet' that give her a lot of trouble. she's been to the vet and specialists, can't remember exactly what is called but her front feet don't dry out properly and she gets infections underneath that eventually come to the top surface as big cyst type things then they burst and the cycle continues. could barf have any effect on this?

also with the patties do you need to add anything eg offal? or just that and bones?

thanks again guys i'll get there one day :mad

by the way this is maddie (can't really tell how fat she is here, but she weighs 35kg. shes a fatty alright  )

Hey, well Obi, weight just over 30 kgs but he is male, I would think that males should weigh more than the female. He has always been a big boy but, when we brought him home, everyone said he would be big, he had massive paws, not sure if you can see it in this puppy photo from when he was 5 weeks old. There has been the odd time that the vet has mentioned he could do with loosing some weight. I don't think he has gain anything since changing his diet. I find the patties are definitely easier, however if you are feed more than one dog, you may find it too expensive. It would be unusual to see a little bit of a stomach upset, his stomach has to get use to the new food. I not sure if Obi suffered from that as we started him on the diet when all the rains started, so it turned into mush anyway. If you get the patties you don't have to add anymore supplements it is all in them. I made obi a treat yesterday, I brought some natural yoghurt, added some egg and some liver and blended it, he loved it, but I don't plan to do that all the time.

Hey guys.

Bumping an old thread as I need a few answers and figure it's easier for when people search if more is in less threads.

What kind of vegetables do people mix in? Fruits?

Once I blend the veges I assume I can freeze it into individual portions?

This is what I worked out:

480g total

168g raw bones

216g mince (beef, roo, chicken)

14g offal

48g veggie

------

312g blended together and frozen.

Sound good? (axle is 24kg)
