  1. Did the dog die from bleeding internally or the infection do you know?
  2. yes the Vit K needs to be continued and Platelets would be good......They need to do a clotting profile to see what he is up to Keeping fingers and paws crossed for this gorgeous boy.........I have gone through all of this with a friends dog, we ended up at Werribee Did he have a raging fever?
  3. Hi sorry for the delay in updating, had to work this morning. Dropped round to see Reg before work. Good news is he stopped bleeding about 5am. Bad news is he wont weight bear on his legs and he has a very high fever - 41deg. Vet came to see him at home and is very concerned about his high fever which indicates a raging infection somewhere. Owner jsut left to go pick up IV antibiotics and fluid. She is going to run a bag of fluids into him and antibiotics. hoping that will bring his fever down. Does anyone know oif this kind of fever is usually associated with ratsack poisoning? Im sitting with the beautiful boy spraying his mouth to keep it moist. The owner had maybe an hours sleep last night, Reg was too unwell for her to sleep. He looks better, no blood and settled but am worried++ about the infection now.
  4. Im so grateful for all the support and encouragement. At one stage today I believed Reg was dying, bleeding to death internally as I held him. I cant sleep as that moment keeps replaying in my head. Words dont really convey the horror I felt. He is such a lovely dog, so trusting and so gentle. Thank god he made it through the day. Old dogs are such beautiful souls.
  5. Italian greyhounds are very easy care. They barely shed, have no odour and exercise themselves in the backyard. They require almost no grooming and get along well with other dogs. There are a few that end up in rescue but not many compared to other breeds.
  6. Reg is at home with his owner, hes settled but still bleeding. His fever has come down and his gums are a healthy pink colour. If he has another big bleed during the night she will call me and Ill meet her at the vet with my golden karma, who will donate blood for another transfusion. Im emotionally and physically exhausted. Owners husband is overseas so shes all alone.. I feel so sorry for her as she loves Reg dearly. Thanks for all the good wishes and the info ppl provided, it has really helped me get thru this awful day.
  7. Ok well Reg is still with us. He had a blood transfusion and also plasma. Thankfully his owner arrived back just as I was trying to carry him out to the car. My golden is next on the list of donors if needs be. We used the vets dog this time. I have to g0o round and help the owner get him into the house. thankd for all the support xxx
  8. he now has vblood pissing out his nose. Going back to vet
  9. too long :D trouble is, this will be happening internally as well :D Thats my fear its bloody heartbreaking watching him ....
  10. Not thaT i know of. Im so drained from the day. Hes still bleeding, anyone got any idea how long it should take to stop?? He is lying quietly on the lounge His owner is devastated and blaming herself..
  11. Hes at home with me, I wont leave my dogs at the vet. If he needed to be on a drip I would just have brought him home on a drip. One of the advantages of living in the sticks i guess! I havent left his side as hes more settled when im with him poor old fella. Hes lying on the lougeroom floor bleeding happily away lol How it he going....have they given him anything for the bleeding, such as platelets or at least Vit K.....Ratsack (warfarin) is nasty stuff. And did they do a blood clotting test? Because you can do blood test that will give a level to see how serious it is I hope he is on the improve He had approx 4 injections. Two were vit k not sure about the others. I was pretty stressed at the time, so didnt take in the finer details. I was desperatly trying to contact the owner. Owner will phone the vet when she gets here and get all the info re medications.
  12. Reg - I know he looks yucky right now but hes a beautiful boy
  13. Thankfully hes not dehydrated as he has been drinking a lot of water. Thanks for the tip re washing him. Will leave him all crusty. Wish the bleeding would stop .. sigh.. if he gets up and moves around at all the bleeding gets noticeably worse. Good thing im planning on ripping the carpet up in this room, theres blood drips and splatters everywhere.
  14. There was a lot of blood, I was very very anxious for a while there. While hes still bleeding it has slowed down heaps, so seems the vit k is working. Reg is a big boy, and im sure this has helped him, an IG is so small they would be easily overcome by the ratsac i imagine. Reg also has a fever. Basically im to watch him. If bleeding gets worse then straight back to vet. Any concerns, call the vet. He is more settled here with me than in a strange environment. Aircon is on high and hes laying on the lounge quietly. Tomorrow he goes back to the vet for more medication. Basically its a wait and see thing now, to see if the bleeding stops. Unfortunately living out here means I dont have access to specialist vet care. The owner should be home in 2 hrs. She is a registered nurse so has a lot more knowledge than me re:meds.
  15. Yup plus my friend is the vet nurse so I would call her or the vet if I had any questions/concerns. I live in Broken Hill. I am not a nurse but i work in a hospital and am familiar with IVs etc. Its not rocket science its a drip line. I understand not everyone would be comfortable doing this, but I would be.

  17. Well finally back from the vets. I let him out to go to the loo while I got dressed to take him to the vet. When I went to put him in the car I found him covered in blood. It was all over his legs and dripping out of his mouth and nose. Raced him to the vet who immediately asked me had he been exposed to ratsack or similar. I never have anything like that on my property. Vet then thought maybe a tumor in his lungs has ruptured. He continued to bleed everywhere. Took me an hour or so to get onto his owner, who told me she had put ratsack down under furtniture outside, but had tradesmen in doing work this week and they had moved some of her furniture. So it was possible Reg had eaten some. Vet immediatly started treating him for ratsack poisoning. Owner is beside herself and on her way back home. Reg is still bleeding but the bleeding has slowed down considerably. He has been weitn me since Wed PM so he injested the ratsack at least 3 days ago. He isalso running a high fever so has some kind of infection. I am just hoping and praying his organs have not been damaged by bleeding. I feel so irresponsible for not taking him to the vet yesterday when he vomited, but my own dogs often throw up and its never anything sinister. I am going to have to try and wash some of the blood off him - his front legs and his chest are red, as his owner will freak if she sees him like that. Talk about a stressful morning!
  18. Thanks.. hes a beautiful old boy and I feel terrible hes gotten ill while in my care. Im trying to stay calm and not hit the OHMYGOD button lol
  19. His owner is in Adelaide, 6 hrs drive away. Hence I am highly anxious.
  20. I minding a friends 12yr old golden retriever named Reg. Ive minded him before with no problems. Thursday night i fed him his dry food then noticed he stole a meaty bone from Karma, but didnt worry about it as ive fed him raw bones lots of times before with no worry. Plus his owner gives him bones regularly. Early hours of Friday morning he threw up twice. But was otherwise fine, so i cleaned it up. Got home from work and he'd thrown up a few more times. Didnt feed him last night thought id give his belly a rest. Heard him coughing during the night last night, got up to him and he was fine just coughing. This mornin he has coughed up some blood! We are off to the vet in an hour or so but now im really worried! Im freaking out the bone he ate thursday night has torn his stomach? That will mean surgery wont it?
  21. I looked into it as a way of keeping my cats in my yard but it would have cost me thousands to do the whole fenceline so i ended up getting a cat enclosure.
  22. RIP Rocco, what a great ambassador for his breed. Must be heartbreaking for his owner
  23. My 4 yr old golden retriever has always eayen grass, I think she is part cow LOL. Dont worry about it, most dogs eat grass.
  24. Natures Gift is the only tinned puppy food my new iggy pup will eat. I feed her natures gift tinned, optimum kibble and raw meaty bones. She is doing well on this combination of foods.
  25. Ive flown pups and kittens to Broken Hill in the middle of summer before without a problem. Something is very suss about the pup dying!
