  1. It can be really frustrating training LLW when you feel like you've tried it all and you don't know what else to do. I personally found that the change of direction technique worked best for my dogs, coupled with a one on one session with a reputable trainer. It can really help to have someone show you where you are going wrong. Micha pulled on the leash for four years before I went and saw a trainer, we literally had him walking on a loose within a single session.
  2. If an aggressive dog came rushing towards my dog and I, and 'growling' at it to back off didn't work, I would kick it if it tried to attack my dog. Absolutely. I would do anything to protect my dogs in a situation like that.
  3. I use NRM's ..... it is feedback for the dog, just as "good" is my feedback for "you're doing right but exercise not over". I don't think NRM's are or need to be punishing. I will use a NRM to mark a 'mistake' by my dog, then guide him back to the place he was (eg a broken sit/stay) and recommand. "Good" will follow when he is holding the sit/stay. My boy responds well to both of these forms of 'feedback'. I think dogs find them helpful if we've been consistent with them and they know what they mean. I think it would be more stressful on a dog not to receive 'feedback' so he doesn't know WHY he's not receiving an anticipated reward. I also don't think it is necessary to use a NRM and leave the dog to guess at what he's supposed to do, unless you are purposely using the shaping method of training for some specific reason. I agree with the above ;) I use a NRM and never had any problems with it. I have a confident dog who likes to get feedback.
  4. *sniffs* It's true I don't think you have anything to worry about Daisy will probably eat all the training treats I bring in the car on the way down or something :D
  5. Come on Sparky, take a sick day or something :D
  6. LOL not at all, but I've been doing a training in drive program with Daisy for a while now and I'd like to get her at a semi-decent level in her training by the time we go to the workshop :D
  7. Two months to go today! Daisy and I need two more months to get ready :D I went to video a training session with her today, I set up the camera outside and when I came back inside to take her out, she had managed to get the training treats I'd just cooked and cut up (beef sausages) and ate almost all of the container She still worked ok considering she had a full belly... yes this is the dog I want to trial with :D
  8. That sucks Sparky And Calli is awesome - it would take barely any work for her to be working well! I wish Daisy had her level of mad drive all the time ;)
  9. Awww I had to go to a 21st tonight anyway. I will have to come along to one of the ring run outs when Daisy is ready and you can show us how its done :D You should be thrilled! That's a fantastic achievement
  10. Personally, especially with a breed where positive socialisation with other dogs is vital, I would not be keeping him cooped up until 12 weeks. Have a read of the puppy development calendar that's pinned on the top of this forum: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=117592 Between 8-12 weeks is a crucial time for pups to learn and have lots of positive socialisation. If you go to a good puppy school you won't have a problem with your pup catching anything, and you will give him an opportunity to socialise with other pups in his most critical period. If you don't go to puppy school you need to ensure you are taking your pup out and socialisation.
  11. Now THAT is a brag!! Go Nuevo!!!! That's fantastic!!!! I wish I'd been there, you told me it was tomorrow Did you get it on video? 82 out of 100 is a great score!
  12. I don't have many good pics as I'm not a very talented photographer - this is my only entrant for the moment:
  13. Thanks guys I am still really chuffed with my little girl, she is slowly coming along and trialling now feels more and more like a reality than a dream
  14. Well you better watch yourself this time or I won't have a bug swatter-er

  16. About two hours, from memory Googlemaps puts the time from my house to CT at 1hr 50 minutes too.
  17. you can always drive down the night before and stay at Camp Tailwaggers
  18. All naughty things I suspect We have two more months of training time though, so hopefully she will come along well in that time and she'll be working well by the time the workshop rolls around
  19. I think lunch is $12.50 extra, if you want it? It should be in the email you were sent with the payment details. I would bring all of the things you mentioned above, as well as water/food for yourself if you want it, treats or your dog's favourite toy, there will be chairs there if you want but you can bring your own chairs too.... um I'm not sure what else Hell yeah! I'll be bringing food for Daisy
  20. K9: Oh yeah, blame the dog.... lol. But but but but she's evil K9: no wonder she goes wooo wooo wooo! You don't know the half of it ;) She was carrying on and on and on and on the other night wooo wooo wooo'ing and I couldn't work out why, it was like there was something under the couch but I couldn't see anything under there - eventually, I realised there was a single cat biscuit under the lounge and she was wooo'ing because she couldn't reach it. Yep, evil
  21. K9: Oh yeah, blame the dog.... lol. But but but but she's evil ;)
  22. oh I am so not coming now ;) ETA: and at least your dog comes back to you when you call her At least your dog is quiet and doesn't have a reputation for stealing donuts
  23. Uh oh, this is going to be another one of those chatty workshops... 'specially if BC4ME comes along - she's a trouble maker that one! LOL At this rate I'm going to have the best behaved dog there seeing as you all think your dogs are naughty! Ella couldn't possibly be anything but well behaved :D :p I really don't think Daisy has much competition for The Naughtiest Dog Ever, after all it was her that stole two Krispy Kreme donuts straight out of the box at a DOL meet not that long ago And as Steve will tell you, she really does love the sound of her own voice ;) Although I agree - we must watch out for that BC4ME, she is most definitely a trouble maker She'll be leading us all astray :p ETA: Crap, Steve is bringing one of his dogs... now we're all in trouble
  24. Is that the gorgeous Poodle in your sig, Mish?
  25. Uh oh, this is going to be another one of those chatty workshops... ;)
