My baby is Wisdom but she gets Wiz, Wizbang and BANG! Lol. I've heard of Whiz as a name before :)

It may not be aggression it could be prey drive or a number of other things but it doesn't have to be aggression to be dangerous behavior

I agree with HW. Everyone is making guesses here, no one can be sure what behavior the dog is exhibiting, not just because we can't see it but because we are also relying on the owner to read and describe the dog and we can't be sure they are reading the behavior accurately or what they might be leaving out that could be important. There's already been advice in this thread given that is simply inaccurate, we shouldn't confuse the OP any further IMO.

VIC will be in November :D

While no one can give you an accurate assessment of what is going on via the internet there are lots of red flags in your post. Please look into getting professional help ASAP. This can escalate badly very quickly. If you shoot me an email to [email protected] I can send you through some info.

I was actually talking to someone about holding a NZ workshop just yesterday, we would love to do one, I don't think we will get there this year as Steve's calendar is already filling up fast for the rest of the year but next year is definitely a possibility!
-
Quite possibly, not 100% sure yet, someone does have to stay back to man K9 Pro HQ and look after our crazy Malinois! LOL!

I have done a bit of rally but obedience is really my passion! There's no simple answer as to how much time it takes, it really depends on you and your dog and what your goals are for how you want your dog to work. My youngest dog is 16 months and I am taking my time with her to get her working exactly how I want her but I am also training her to be competitive not just to compete (if that makes sense) so I have a very specific goal in mind as to how I want everything. I would suggest going to lots of rally and obed trials as a spectator and volunteer to steward and help out at your club trials. You can get a good idea of what is involved in competing in each sport and also what competitors you enjoy watching (to give you an idea on what kind of 'style' you like and might want to achieve with your dog)

We need more pics! Not sure how Lollipup is finding it but our Mals love to chill out with us at home. Wiz sleeps on my bed every night, likes to lie with me on the lounge watching TV etc. Definitely not a dog for everyone (or most people), but they can definitely be taught to switch off and they love their people so much they really love to be with you. Of course she will do crazy Mal things too, last night I caught her carry a house brick (??!) around the back yard for some unknown reason. She will work until she drops dead, but when she's not 'on' she's super sooky and quite handle sensitive/submissive. -
Someone Is Trying To Rehome A Malinois
huski replied to Remarkabull's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree definitely see if contacting the breeder is possible first and foremost. Mals aren't that common fortunately. -
I have to be strict with Daisy as she will put weight on so easily because she is such a massive guts and will never stop gorging herself. She really only needs a small amount of food. Wisdom can eat and eat and eat and never seems to get fat! She is super lean and eats over 1kg of raw a day, she's about 27kg. Our Sibe is a bit bigger than Wiz and would eat the same amount as Daisy, maybe a little bit more so it shows how much it can differ from dog to dog. We could never free feed here

It can happen because you're never letting the dog truly be rewarded to the level it needs to be. It's got nothing to do with a dog that isnt trained properly, you can have the highest drive in the world and ruin the dogs pep during the developmental stage. Once again handler error. Michael Ellis is right on that one. I don't think Michael Ellis is saying that training a motivational out causes those problem, if you are experiencing the above issues that is a problem with how you are playing the game and how you are motivating (or demotivating) the dog, not simply because you asked the dog to out. We have hundreds of dogs that come here that we train to play tug, every dog and puppy learns to out in the first game, we have never had a problem with training an out effecting motivation, drive, grip or anything else. IMO yes it is something we train in the first game we play with the dog, but obviously what you can see from this thread is that everyone trains it differently :) -

Each to their own, the out is something Steve trains in the first game, both of our dogs have super high motivation for tug, but also have great grip and outs. if the dog is playing tug, they need to learn what out means, as it is an integral part of the game. I think there are lots of ways to motivate and demotivate dogs from playing tug, however I've never seen outing the dog do this, unless it hasn't been trained properly. Just my two cents! Yes she is out of Lilo :D -

Sounds like Nova is going to be a superstar! I wouldn't be concentrating too hard on teaching an out command. If you work on this too much with puppies that are still learning to tug it can cause them to have a weaker grip and less devotion to the tug if that makes sense. I am just concentrating on getting Envy very interested in tugging and holding on before I teach the out. Just a tip I picked up from Michael Ellis videos :) I think it depends on your approach to training tug. The out should be one of the most motivating commands for the dog. I always train an out from day one as its part of the game and I definitely don't have any problems with grip or 'devotion' lol. Just my two cents! ETA: I can't remember, did I tell you Envy and Wisdom are related?! :D Re the off switch my Mal has one, she even sleeps on my bed every night! I think it's less about the off switch and more about whether you can live with them when they are on lol. -
I agree WW, my dog loves balls and will fetch for hours but I would never think it was ok for her to steal another dogs ball. I wouldn't have her off leash if that was the case, it can be controlled with training.

What Trick Are You Teaching Your Dog
huski replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yes and no, some dogs work it out faster than others, Daisy is a scent hound so loves using her nose and has done well with other scent exercises I've trained. It's not really hard work, but is very fun! -
What Trick Are You Teaching Your Dog
huski replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sheena you can use it as a basis for scent discrim depending on what you select as the target odour. I always train with a bias towards obedience so the target odour is my scent but it could be anything. We are playing around with scent tubes now which is very fun :) I want D not just to retrieve an article with my scent but to discriminate my scent from other odours including her reward odour (food) -

Not really a trick, but I am teaching Daisy odour detection at the moment. Very cool!
