  1. Sheesh, My male Pyr is only 65kg (and he is far from small! - 74.5 cm at the shoulder and solid). People are often disappointed when they hear how much he weighs as they are always sure he is more  . No way could I imagine an 80kg Rottie.....:mad

Yup! Zac (Irish Wolfhound) is "only" 77kg. But then I still get people telling me that their Mother's, Cousin's, Uncle's best mate had one that was much bigger.

Like others have said I think there are some people out there that just have to have the biggest badest [insert breed here] :(

  2. Totally OT:

Keshwar: I clicked on your website link and had to write:

I love the layout and writing style. Informative, simple, funny, honest. kewl

    Hi Lilli,

    Must have missed this. :(

Glad you like the site. I try to keep it simple and easy to read. :)

Thanks for the positive feed back.

  3. I'm curious as to why you would want to import a Papillon when there are 79 Australian breeders listed on DOL?

Would importing a dog give you anything that is not already in Australia?

Given the risks and difficulties involved in importing a dog I was just wondering why you would go down that path before considering one of the many breeders in Aus.

  4. Thank u everyone

i think i my handling does change in the ring i get a little nervous still.will go back to basics with her and try not to over think/train her. Ive asked a few close friends who watch her in the ring and they say she is looking great i just feel she should be next to me and not two feet behind lol!

Next show in a fortnight will see how we go :)

Get someone to video you and your dog in the ring. Works much better that having someone tell you what you and your dog look like in the ring.

If you don't have a video camera most smart phones can take good enough quality video these days. :)

  5. Where did the Newfoundland originate?

    Where did the Labrador originate?

    Along the same lines

Where does the Irish Wolfhound originate and what did it do?

Where does the Scottish Deerhound originate and what did it do?

And yes I have been asked this about Zac. :)

  6. Pretty much anything over 30 degrees is too hot for me and the dogs to be running around outside. I don't love showing enough to bother with it when it gets to around that level :) Even obedience assessment last weekend - it was 27 degrees and I spent the entire time while waiting to go in for assessment trying to keep Radar shaded so he wouldn't be a wilted flower in the ring! Darn black dogs!

Funny story about obedience, black dogs and hot temps.

My black Afghan took himself off to the shade in the middle of the down stay in a trial. The Judge and lined all the dogs up in the sun, he decided it was too hot in the sun and slowly got up, moved to the shade and resumed the stay. Perfectly sensible in my mind not so the judge.

  7. Just on another side line Thank you for doing that little phonetic break down on how to pronounce your breed name it has had me stumped for a while now, so now I will be able to finally say it correctly (I hope)

    Xoloitzcuintle

    -show low eats qweent lee-

thank you Zeebie, its still exciting for me when people go ... thats a X dog or try the name, I am very happy when people know what it is, the saying part just takes practice, we say Show Lo ( Xolo) so far a well known Judge and canberaa lady has the best pronunciation ( its not right and very rude) she even somehow managed to get the Sydney Royal Show people to say it in the loud speaker last year! I had to dubb my video!

And because of this lady I have this name stuck in my head. I just hope if I am ever Stewarding and I have to call them I get it right and don't accidentally use the rude version! LOL

  8. Lol at keshwar. but people wont read your t shirt. theyll be too busy gaping at your shaggy horse!

 I know Raz, it's the critical flaw in my cunning plan.

I can understand people wanting to pat Zac, though. Look at that soft face!

Yup - and he is just a big soft doofus who loves it when people come up to pat him.

The good thing is now he is tall enough that most kids can't try to pat his head so they have to rub his chest instead.

  9. I don't think the general public possess common sense  But I do feel a tad less self conscious training at the shops or other busy public areas due to the fact I own labs and people generally think guide dog. Funnily enough, more so with Ruby (yellow), with Millie (choc) I get more weird looks

I wonder what would happen if you whacked an 'in training' harness on them or similar

Even if there in a harness it doesnt seem to make a difference. My cousin is legally blind and has a guide dog. It shocks me the amount of times people will try and pat the dog or try and feed her or let there kids run up to the dog. Most times they will just go up without even asking and my cousin cant even see them so has no idea whats happening. She tries and not goes out in public without my uncle now becuase of this.

This is sad. The idea of guide dogs is to provide independence, yet b/c of ignorance/stupidity on behalf of some members of the public, it seems that your cousin is actually loosing her independence.

  10. What is Canberra Royal like? As in set up, ease of getting to and around the grounds etc?

I am thinking of coming over this year if we can get decent airfare prices so am curious about what it is like.

For a Royal it is very relaxed. Basically it is a big Ag Show. :)

It is run just like a normal show. You don't have to stay all day, no benching of dogs etc.

There is separate parking for dog show exhibitors reasonably close to the grounds - depends which ring you are in. :)

Dedicated entry for dog show exhibitors so you don't need to fight your way through the General Public.

Only thing is you can not leave Gazebos set up over night if you are there multiple days.

    Highly recommend it.

  11. Does anyone else get really nervous before flying with their dogs?

This feeling has overcome me all week so far and I don't fly out until Saturday morning! I know once we get to Melbourne, I'll be ok. But it's all the "stressful" (in my mind!) things that happen before that, that churn my stomach. Getting to the airport on time, getting them lodged, making sure they get on the plane. It's the start of school holidays, so it might be busy. Hopefully not early morning. Then any slight turbulence, my stomach sinks. I always find that descending into Melbourne it's quite rough. This is my third year traveling to the Melb specialty.

Does anyone else get like this? or am I alone.

I hate it because I know my dogs feel it and I make it worse for them. As we are flying at 7:55am, alcohol is not an option.. it's not an option anyway as I'm allergic to it!

The dogs are fine on the other end once they see us and get out of their crates.

    Yup! :)

This is why I drive from Yass in NSW to Brisbane for the Afghan Specialty. Takes me a lot longer but I feel so much better. Plus I get a longer holiday. LOL
