  1. I dont know about all Sighthounds but I can tell you that there's no way known I'd be on SSM's property if there was no one home and Jadir was on patrol. Some sighthounds (not necessarily Salukis) have performed guarding functions over the years (hello Azawakhs) and anyone concluding that all sighthounds aren't protective could be in for a bit of a shock.. a 50kph or more closing fast shock ;)

LOL - Jadir is the decoy - it's Faxon you really need to watch out for.

I'd believe it but it is hard to take blondes as seriously. ;) Did 'Ghans have a guarding role in their villages Bear?

Faxon is the black one! ;)

Depends what you want to believe. There is the legend about Afghan hounds guarding a British outpost in Afghanistan in the 19th century. Apparentlyy they patrolled in pairs with no human intervention.

  2. It is, and I should have said 'shy', but actually somehow thought 'timid' was practically the same thing and might be easier to swallow. Oops!

I don't find "shy" any less easy to swallow.

    "Reserved" on the other hand..

Or "couldn't give a sh!t about things I'm not bred for"

Which manifests in some sighthounds as "couldn't give a shit about making nice with strangers".

  3. Hi, another new newbie =]

I'm a bit late getting into showing (still deciding whether to do conformation or agility, my partner and I have different opinions).

My girl is 6 months in October (when I hope to first show her, at a very small country show - expect more questions around then lol) but there is a bigger show this weekend that I am just going along to get a feel for (agility is on as well, same day/same time/different place) my question is:

As a hopeful future exhibitor, with a main registered bitch + a member of DogsNSW is it out of place/rude/wrong to bring my pup along? I wasn't going to take her, but if it IS ok, the chance to bring her out with us on sunny 30 degree day would be nice.

Thanks, I've gone through a ton of threads but haven't yet stumbled across this question other than "members of the public bringing dogs along". :)

As long as your pup is well behaved, on a leash and not getting in the way there is probably no problem.

BUT..... you knew there was a but didn't you? :)

If this is the first show you have been to, then you may want to leave her at home this time. If you are going to get a feel for what happens at a show it is probably better not to have your pup because then you can concentrate on what's going on without having to worry about your pup.

    HTH

    Bear.

  4. Apologies guys, work is crazy right now and I don't even have time for lunch so I won't be able to call around today. If anyone else would like to, feel free, otherwise I will do it tomorrow.

We imported a complete lure coursing kit from Injoy. Cost about $2,000 including freight and GST.

Good luck with getting lure coursing set up in SA. I really hope it works.

I would really like to see Lure Coursing recognised by ANKC. So the more people doing it the better.

  5. When the Customs Beagle indicated on the liver treats in my handbag. :D

That happened to me as well except the treats were in my pocket. Fortunately the handler was must understanding when I explained I was an obedience instructor.

The beagle kept coming back to me for treats. :)

  6. THis is probably a silly question but my bitch was born on the 4th of the month. If I enter shows that are on the 3rd of the month, will she still be in the same class?

Yup for the 3rd. If the show is over a weekend eg Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th then you would enter her in different classes.

  7. Keshwar is the middle name of the Afghan woman Meena Kamal, who founded RAWA

    Meena

Meena was the founding leader of RAWA (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan), an organization that captured people's attention with their highly publicized criticism of the Taliban's mistreatment of Afghan women. Meena also founded a bilingual magazine (Payam-e Zan) which publishes articles on different political and social matters affecting Afghan women. RAWA claims that she was killed on February 4,1987 by KHAD agents working with Hekmatyar's group, Hezb-e Islami. RAWA wishes to establish a secular government in Afghanistan.

  8. In the New national body thread people have said they would like to see changes to the ANKC.

What changes would you like to see made?

Here's some I would like to see.

I would like to see consistent rules/regs nationally.

I would like to see one national body with offices in each state and territory. So no dogsnsw, dogact, dogsvic etc just the ANKC.

Elected representatives on the governing body board from each state/territory. Reps elected by all members in each state/territory.

  9. Would the current members' of the present dog councils support a new dog organisation ?

If it were national, with all the titles etc and shows. An organisation managed (finacially by a business people) with suitable controls and transperances. This is possible. There need not be only one dog organisation in Australia.

Just have a quiet think about it .In a recent survey 78% of those canvassed at shows said yes.

Isn't this what MDBA are doing?

No I don't feel the need for another National body.

I do think the ANKC could do with some improvement tho'.

  10. I like a person who is respectful to other exhibitors, despite the fact that they are competition. Congratulate winning exhibitor, ask if they are ready to go, that sort of thing...

I used to do this but some people took it as a cue to run up my dogs bum. :mad

After listening to some advise from more experienced exhibitors - ;) - I stopped asking.

  11. Damn, I'm a scratching for Yass this weekend. Had huge plans last weekend (photography, babies, dogs etc) and put my back out on Friday. Since then I have been creeping around the house looking for a bell to ring.:swear::swear: Big improvement today, I can actually stand erect but not without nerves screaming down my legs.

    The joys of being "elderly".

I was looking forward to seeing everyone but will curl up and sulk instead.

    Have a great time, everyone.

I reckon curling up with a heat pack and a large brandy will fix everything!

Hope you heal quickly and are back out n' about the hound ring soon!
