  1. Damn nuisance for the poor dog. So what does the surgery involve?
  2. I thought that might be the case, TKS. I just dont know what the argument is that its cruel.
  3. Hi Eddy. The only dog I have that does cause a bit of a problemo was desexed the day he turned 6 months. The entire dogs dont make much of a sound unless some poor sod delivers pizza on a friday night.
  4. So, excuse my ignorance and this is a genuine question - why would someone use one of these if they could ask a vet to debark a nuisance barker. What's the problem with debarking? Personally I'd rather go for debarking before I would use a shock collar if I had a nuisance barker.

Bawling my eyes out again, Rozzie. I'm so sorry, darling. Run free young man.
  6. Interesting. I was only discussing it with my vet this morning. OK - my breeder swore by it to slow down envenomation and she lived about 45 minutes from her Vet but had almost daily situations in summer. My dogs didnt get a hit of Vitamin C as I didnt have any - I wasnt expecting this in Sydney....however, they were on antivenene, a couple of IVs and sedation within 30 minutes of the strikes. Herpetologists we know say it has no affect whatsoever but I'm not sure if much research has been done - lets face it.....subject a dog to envenomation then hit it with Vitamin C to see if it works. I think not. I'll ask my cousin when I speak to him next - he breeds venomous snakes and milks them for antivenene. You never know - I think he's eccentric enough to experiment on himself. As for shoosnake....I did look into that but my cousin said he doused a rag in it only to find the snake happily made its way over the rag. I didnt buy any. When buying the syringes its important to know that the stuff is really viscous so a large gauge is needed (or small - I never did get that terminology correct but get the big needles). I actually had a week long course of intravenous vitamin c myself - the stuff is incredibly thick, takes forever to go in and is super cold but it worked for me when Doctors said it would only give me expensive peepees. Anyway - if a dog is bitten, dont stuff around looking for a vein. Jab it intramuscularly - is that a word I've just made up? You get my drift anyway. And snake ID is really important as Vets are no longer given the venom test kit - all of the hospitals are using them. Doesnt that just say something for what's happening with this drought! Good luck and I hope you never need it.
  7. gusgem, there was something on dol a few months ago about a dog having a fatal reaction to something as small as 6 grapes or raisins (if memory serves me correctly). If you do a search there may be something in there about exactly what the toxin is. My dogs loved grapes but not after reading that.
  8. no digital between us so I'll have to take some prints then scan. Neighbour really appreciates those lists, Romanysky, and I've told her to join DOL.
  9. I'm popping over shortly with the printout so I'll see if she has a digital, Romanysky. She's the cutest little thing I've ever seen and her xmas collar and lead are divine! oops, sorry Divine Angel. With the eggplant I would assume its both the plant and the eggplant itslef - deadly nightshade family. My dogs also react to tomato plant - same family. It makes them itch so no more vegie patch here. They love the tomatoes but they can lead to arthritis - too high in acid. With Bird of Paradise its the seed rather than the plant.
  10. Brilliant Romanysky. I've just printed this thread for my neighbour who has a great garden but a new West Highland puppy. I think the garden has to go!!!
  11. Mel, do you know what spinach and tomato can do? -I used to grow them and the dogs gorged on it. No more vegie garden for me. Bilby, it is a small garden and I would assume she found it by accident as the 2 dogs already here certainly hadnt found it prior. I was told years ago by a horticulturalist not to leave unlabeled bulbs in the fridge as most of them are poisonous to humans if eaten (mistaken for an onion) so rule of thumb here is all bulbs had to come out before our first dog arrived. Saying that, however, years ago I had 2 dogs on 1 acre of cottage garden - thousands of bulbs and homoeopathic plants like foxglove with no ill affect. Elise - possum poo? Just a little or a lot? One of my dogs was looking a bit worse for wear yesterday ie shaking, tail down, back roached. Maybe he found some possum poo - I have seen a possum trying to raid the worm farm lately..... I stuck him under a doona for a while and he was fine and I just thought the little bugger was wanting some one on one time with me!
  12. OK, Ill dive in. A new baby arrived and shortly thereafter (some days) I woke in the morning to find her shivering uncontrollably, lethargic, totally apathetic and eyes looking red and....um....only word was disinterested. Prior to that she had been a real little monster of activity. I called the breeder while bundling baby into the car en route to vet. Vet said shivering was normal on a veterinary table as it was in an unfamiliar environment - this was after I told him she was a show dog and used to tabling......and she had been shivering despite being under an arctic sleeping bag. Lets get real here - owners know when their animals dont feel great. He prescribed antibiotics for a tummy upset and told me to watch her for 24 hours. When I returned home I found what looked like a half eaten bulb on the back lawn. Called the vet in a panic and was told the same thing - Stop worrying and just watch her for 24 hours. Keep giving her the antibiotics. It turned out well in the end but holy-moly..... Is there an antidote for any toxic substances, be they onions, bulbs, chocolate etc. What can owners do to cut down on that kind of stress? And antibiotics???? Give me a break! Instant cure for anything a vet or medical practitioner doesnt know the answer to.... Thanks for the thread, Ci
  13. WendyH, You really got me in the heart. Seeing the photo of his favorite spot did it! Little darling..
