Perhaps another option is to give the Friday show a swerve and reconsider whether travel in on Saturday is feasible and responsible?

Yes, good point. When Yass River Rd was cut off last week they didn't show it.

Purina's "information" On Feeding Bones To Dogs
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I suppose the flip side might be dogs whose health is compromised by really shitty teeth. One thing the vets always comment on at our yearly check ups is our dogs' clean healthy teeth. We have also never had any anal gland problems. I think supervision and choosing the right bone for your dog counts for a lot, and while I don't want to jinx myself, we've not had a bone related injury in 8 years. -
Agree with the others that the right vet for the breed from the start will save a world of expense, stress and time in the long run. Well worth an hour or two's drive. I take mine to a vet an hour from my home for any sporting issues - he was once a greyhound track vet. He knows the difference between a very fit sighthound heart and a heart problem for example. Many vets do not as my wallet and I found out the hard way. We also saved a lot of money and pain for a companion dog who a local vet wanted to do invasive bone surgery on as a puppy. The specialist in Sydney said to leave it, and that was the right decision. Cost us 6 hours travel time and his fee, but when compared to paying through the nose for an unnecessary operation and crating a puppy for weeks during important socialisation periods I'll take the 6 hours travel any time!

Judge's Behaviour On Video?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
A judge can also be too tentative and fussy. Showing a sighthound you sometimes get judges who think that because you are instructed to handle them sensitively that you should make a production of the approach while eyeballing the dog strangely the whole time. The longer the approach goes on and the more tentative the judge is, the more likely the dog is going to think "wow, this is weird, wonder what the problem is?". I like the old gundog guys and hound people who can see immediately what the construction is and go straight in and go over the dog with no fuss & no drama. -
Canberrans who were entered at Grong Grong still have a couple of hours to enter online at OzEntries for the Junior KC shows if they still want to get their showing fix this coming weekend.

Show Grooming Products And Tips
SkySoaringMagpie replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
PM, Fido's is fine, a lot of people use it and if it works for you I'd stick with it. A lot of people do the feet over twice. So, wash the dog including feet, but then wash the feet specifically again as well. I think the spirit of that regulation is that the product should not be used in an attempt to deceive the judge. Getting red dirt out of a dog's feet is not attempting to deceive the judge. The reg is designed to stop people doing things like blacking up a butterfly nose or dying in a desirable coat colour. -
Do You Use Jealousy To Your Advantage?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to raineth's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have one that gets jealous about baths. It's crazy, never seen anything like it - most, like you say, run and pretend they don't exist. She also hops up on the grooming table when my OH gets it out to do the Afghans. Clearly she doesn't mind the baths and grooming and likes the attention. Funny dog. -
You Work Full Time
SkySoaringMagpie replied to ShesaLikeableBiBear's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think the best route is to take some time off, but use that time off to increase the amount of time that you are gone to something equivalent to your first work day absence. Whether you choose the day after pup comes home or two weeks after the pup comes home you're still hitting the pup with big change to routine if you go from constant company to nothing for 8 hours. -
Is that still the case? I know they have tightened it up a lot over the last few years. In any case, neither Diva nor myself fall into the Junior with breeder parents/grandparents category and my main mentor is on the other side of the country. With a full time job that means being around to help her raise the pups isn't workable. My other two breed mentors are very experienced but have concluded their breeding in my breed/group. I think there are others like us around who can supply the brain/money/dedication involved including travel overseas to view shows and coursing, but who don't want to bucket most of three litters just to get a license. I already do all the other things required (long canine control membership, active committee member, active steward) and do it anyway, not just for a licence. Edited to add: If I had a companion breed that was easier to place it would be much less of an issue. My breed is not easy to place, has large litters and the market is already saturated, with a number of more experienced breeders having difficulty placing pups.

Have I Committed The Ultimate Sin?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Cuchulain's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree with Espinay that it isn't where they sleep/sit but whether they will move when you approach/tell them too that matters. If they don't move aside for humans then their bed/furniture privileges should be revoked, otherwise all is good. I'm not saying that people who are houseproud shouldn't keep dogs off beds and furniture if they want to, as long as there is a decent bed for the dog it's all good. Our guest bedroom is off limits for the dogs for example, and other rooms are off limits if humans are not in them at the time including our own bedroom. But calling it a training issue when it's a personal preference is a bit of rationalisation I think. His flat demeanour could have been because he ate a rotten bird in the backyard and had a tummy upset, or had a bad experience, or any number of a zillion other things. If he's OK now then no harm done, tho' I agree with the others that vaccing a dog who may be sick isn't a good idea. I usually check for gum colour, temp and dehydration if they seem flat. If they are dehydrated and not drinking, have a temp, or have very pale gums, off to the vet. Otherwise I just observe for a while. Was it only the sleeping on the bed thing that upset the breeder or were there other issues? Perhaps she felt that as the vet found nothing wrong the dog must have been "sooking" and felt you had encouraged him to be a "sook" by letting him sleep on the bed? If so, well, some people think that way but the main thing is that there is nothing out there obliging you to think that way. -
Judge's Behaviour On Video?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Exactly, re authority figures. It's not just restricted to show, I've seen people allow obedience trainers to do things that they were very uncomfortable with because the trainer was the "expert" in the position of authority. Some of the self-styled experts on YouTube scare the willies out of me. As for "OK to do in public" people are still catching up with the idea that there are now camera phones everywhere, I expect that in the next 2-3 years people will start adjusting their behaviour much more. The other thing is that many of those phones/video recorders pick up speech as well. OH video'd me at a show a while back for training purposes and the people standing nearby had a lot to say about a few of the dogs and handlers in the ring. I don't think they realised that video also includes audio . It was just stupid bitching so I'd never do anything with it, but it goes to show that there are recorders everywhere. -
Judge's Behaviour On Video?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
The judge did it, not the owner. And the owner's reasons for not objecting probably had nothing to do with "glory". FB is not exactly a robust investigation forum, but I gather from the discussion there that the exhibitor was not experienced. -
DogsACT has an accommodation listing on its website: http://www.dogsact.org.au/Accomodation.htm I would go to Grand Manor Motor Inn in Queanbeyan, but you might find it's already booked out. For camping, contact the RNCAS direct.

Judge's Behaviour On Video?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, the video has gone viral and I understand the judge is now the subject of FCI complaints. It's not normal or acceptable but unfortunately video of judges playing nicely with babies and settling down skittish adolescents is never going to go viral. I've seen plenty of good stuff from judges. -
Sorry, me being obscure. I meant it may get cancelled as The Rock did this year. Hope not, we've been looking forward to a fun weekend away for ages.

Hi all - sorry to clutter up the forum with my search fail. There was a really good thread with all the things that can go wrong if you decide to BYB your bitch. I can't find it. Can someone give me a pointer?

If you can get there, the show will go on, as they say in the classics. Having an IW rather than a Maltese will help I'd offer a place to stay but we're stranded ourselves. Our very wonderful President is making sure the Hound Club show happens tomorrow. If anyone can help with ticket writing and other jobs please make yourself known to Poodlefan.
