  1. Name: Clancy and Connor Nickname: as above - no nicknames! Breed: Whippets Gender: male de sexed and male entire Age: 5 in July / just turned 1 Picture: end of message Where did you get them from? Registered Breeders How often do you exercise your dog? am is either a walk and free run or walk and training / pm is our usual walk around school grounds also socialising walks at week-ends along foreshore or at pet park Do they know any commands? Clancy has his CCD, Connor is in training for trialling Compete in any dog sports? OT and Show Favourite treat: kabana and some yummy peanut butter dog biscuits that smell so nice I really want to try one! Favourite toy: pink squeaky and hefalump squeaky and Connor's snuggle pup that still goes to bed with him most nights Funny habits or quirks: Clancy has a habit of greeting me by coming through my legs from behind then stopping and looking up to me! Connor just loves to wrap himself around my neck What's their personality like? Clancy can be a bit aloof, he is definately 'top dog' of the two, Connor is a little shadow dog, follows me everywhere and Always checks with Clancy if he is doing the right thing or if he is about to be grrd at. Do they get along well with other dogs? Usually, bit wary at first if the dog is a bit too excited though. Are they scared of anything? They can be a bit worried by small excitable children as they have had limited exposure to kids - hell even I get scared of them at times! What training methods do you use? Positive reinforcement? Corrections? Positive! Annie
  2. We mostly live in a campervan and under the house so all my doggy stuff fits in one plastic crate (large), 2 smaller ones that hold food, and a back pack that holds the daily stuff and I take to shows/trials etc + a good bum bag for training and dog walks! Annie
  3. Does anyone else here have one? I just recently bought one 2nd hand from some people whose dog did not like it at all - mine have been getting used to it and we are about ready to do some slightly longer rides now - BUT I have one corner fraying and was wondering if anyone knows how to fix it up, I cannot see how I can get the fabric off the frame? Anyone? Help? Please? Annie
  4. Hi all I don't know as Mr Helper will take much notice of my email I sent him last night given I cannot effect his votes at any upcoming polls ( being away up here in NT) but I did tell him I was 1st and foremost a Victorian Aussie and one day would get home again so you never know. I too went on a bit but tried to refrain from getting too mushy and also tried to raise all of my serious grounds for concern (to say the least) I hope he does read the email. Annie
  5. Hi All Will be on my pilgramage South and passing through Adelaide about the time of the Royal Show, anyone know when or where I can find the schedule, and which day Whippets are on? Thanks Annie
  6. Lucky you guy's! I would love to have an OT to go to, as it is I shall probably be asleep before the new year comes in as I am no party animal and there are no shows here for New Years either. Say Hi to all the lovely Gawler people, I used to train there many many years ago! Bit too much of a road trip for me I am afraid, too hot down the middle at this time of year. Annie
  7. Thanks for the advice guys, Connor is 16 weeks, his general socialisation and training is coming along fine and I am pleased - ecstatic with the way he is learning in general. It is very much the potential for 'feeding' off the other dogs that worries me, especially if I am not here. Most of our build up storms happen (when they come...not quite here yet but we are having serious build up and very low pressure, this also worries the older dogs, not too mention most humans) either in the afternoon whilst I am still at work or during the night, for hours. Training in the rain is no problem for me I am an ex Victorian Gundog Trialler! I just wish I did shrink a bit in the rain! Getting a Whippet out to train in the rain is a different matter, even when I explain carefully to them it is not like Ballarat and Geelong rain - it's warm and there is a great deal more of it. All ideas and advice most gratefully accepted. Annie
  8. My 2 older dogs have both got a fear of our terrific wet season storms, Clancy was fine at first but 'fed' off Carlins' fear. I do not want Connor to do the same. Does anyone have any good ideas to get around this? In the wet they are all very much indoor dogs - oh who am I kidding, they are all the time! Annie
  9. I welcomed my new pride and joy Connor (baby Whippet) in July. I drove down to Victoria to pick him up said hallo to a few friends down there and then we travelled home slowly having a holiday and bonding session - me, baby Connor and Clancy my 4 yr old Whippet. As we were in the 'house on wheels' young Connor had to be let out to exersize frequently - in places that were as safe as I could manage, not that I had a great deal of control over that. Results: one well socialised baby in very good health - just have to watch him around caravaners and motor homers as they all wanted to give him and Clancy treats everywhere we stopped and I am concerned that he may enter any RV vehicle he finds open looking for treats!! lol When we got home I decided upon puppy play school first, I have never done puppy school before with my dogs we have always gone straight to Obedience Club, I am now very much in favour of play school 1st. I did pretty much the same thing when I got Clancy as a 3 month old boy too and as long as one is careful about where one takes ones dog socialisation over immunisation every time for me - of course they have all their shots at the right times too I hasten to add. Good luck with your baby Bully anyway! Annie
  10. Hi All Anyone here doing the SA Rottie Club trial in Early August? I am passing through Adelaide at that time on my way home to Darwin and thought I might enter Clancy (it is open to all breeds) Don't know too many people down there these days! Be nice to meet some DoLers! Annie
  11. Thanks for all the messages! 1. What Clancy does is act, not really frightened but wary and then perhaps a strange noise or something and he will freeze. 2. I do train in the dark, usually am though, there are few street lights (and most of those don't work!) We do get out on the oval of an evening maybe once a week...Club is difficult for me right now as am a carer to a mate who is seriously ill and I have to find a 'sitter'. Another thought that has come to mind is that as we have only 1 ring up at a time and not many triallers, they sit back outside ring (of course) and when they move even quietly it does make a noise that seems to be the worry, they are also in semi dark...? The othr thing is Clancy and my old dog Carlin spend most of their time in my mates company Mon. - Fri. and he just feeds them snacks a lot - I get home at lunch time for 1.5 hrs (yeah I have a good job right now) and I am almost persona non grata for a bit!! I have asked him not to do this but to no avail. Perhaps on trial days I should put Clancy in my room with fan & water and close door and ask mate not tolet him out? Annie
  12. Hi, need some help here! Clancy my Whippet trains well in the mornings, not too badly in the evenings when there's lots going on at Club, but put him in a Night Trial (I am in Darwin and all our trials are night trials) and he seems to forget everything he ever new and then some! It is not that he cannot do it, he has had 2 good passes but both were when we were on holiday in SA and at day time trials. Does this mean I have to do the 6000 klm round trip to get any more passes?!! (on the up side is it will mean more holidays in the South, Yay!!) Any one got any ideas? Whilst I do not know of anything bad happening to Clancy at night, I do know that people have come in under the house during the day and taken things, the boys have a secure area under the house and maybe they have been frightened, also on early walks before work it is dark and we have had the odd person loom out of the dark. Annie
  13. Hi Sonic Yes it was a stroke or at least a stroke like episode that started it going and it just kept getting worse, vets can do nothing. Well we do have our problems but he has learned to just stick very close to a human leg when he goes down the stairs now, he is most happy just trotting around the small reserve in our street - has house gardens down both sides so is semi enclosed and he uses the walls as a guide, is now loathe to play with Clancy and does not like getting in/out my van..... not in pain although not my happy young dog of a few years ago. Annie
  14. Thanks for replies Tonymc and Haven I will check with Clancy's breeder when I am down south to see if she has heard of anything similar going on with other pups. Carlin was pack leader (after me) to begin with but since having a stroke like episode, losing about 80% of his sight and getting the wobbles and other problems (all having been checked out by vet/s of course) he seems to have 'abdicated' his role, whilst not nasty in nay way to Clancy he is simple no longer interested in him except for a very short period of time on rare occasions. Clancy seems 'upset' by this - comes looking to me for re-assurence almost, acts like he is just not suer of his place in the world anymore. I am very interested to see how things pan out whilst we are away on our own, also interested to see how he handles his obediance work whilst we are away. Thanks again for your comments. Annie
  15. My entries are already inthe envelope and will be posted tomorrow! I start my drive South next Saturday.....woooohoooo! a holiday! Only sad about leaving Carlin at home but he will feel safer and happier here on the deck and with familier things around him and o/h to dote on him, just that I will miss him badly. See you all soon! Annie and her boyz
  16. Hi All Need some advice.... Clancy has just turned 3 years old. Up until about 12-14 months ago I would have said he was a really outgoing Whippet, loved socialising, coffee shop sitting, and so on. Nothing I can think of has happened to have changed that except for:- 1. I am sure there has been a couple of occasions when we have had people (strangers) come into the property under the house where the boys have a day run. 2. Carlin has lost tons of confidence over this same period due to him losing his sight, I know lots of dogs manage this well but Carlin is definately not one of them. Do you think Clancy has lost his boldness due to the fact his 'big brother' has lost his? Or do you think he has had a really big fright by persons unknown entering property? I am taking Clancy on my holidays in 2 weeks time but Carlin will stay home with my mate to 'guard' the verandah lol. I am hoping that by doing this Clancy will get a lot of one on one and see lots of new things and get back into the coffee shop socialising routine we loved when we did our 7 month road trip. Do you lovely dol people think/feel this might help Clancy? Annie and her boyz
  17. Two methods I have used to get sick dogs to take some fluid is a) a tiny amount of milk in the water-just enough for it to turn white. b) Using hot water add a little honey, stir so as to melt honey and allow water to cool down. best wishes to you and Cole, hope all is well again soon. Annie and her boyz
  18. Hi Are the scedules out yet for the Riverland Trials.....? Hmm I guess I am a bit on the early side really, just didn't want to get forgotten! Annie and her boyz
  19. Some rather strange low life's took a whole load of stuff out of the downstairs fridge on friday night, including my doggy hip bag that had Clancy's dumbell in it. Can anyone recommend on on line store (australian) that stocks trial style dumbells (ie not toys) in Whippet size which is about the same size as a Sheltie would use? Thanks Annie and her boyz
  20. Yay, way to go Boston! Well Done! Annie and her boyz
  21. This thread made me laugh! Wouldn't do it now but about 24 years ago I was trialling Wellington and it suddenly dawned on me that he preferred night trials as we did all our training at night ( he was only my 2nd trial dog and I wasn't very bright back then) There were three trials left for the year 1. Mount Gambier, 2. Broken Hill, 3. SAODC on 3 consecutive week-ends, I did the great Aussie thing and 'chucked a couple of sickies and yep, I did the 3 and we got our CD! It was a good holiday. Do trialling and see your State! Annie and her boyz
  22. Thank you so very very much Harminee, My memorial for Crash is just lovely and I am going to have it printed off and framed so that it is always with me - just as his spirit is always here.
  23. Harminee It is a truly wonderfull gesture to do this for people. If you havn't been snowed under completely do you think you would be able to do one for me too? I would have to email the photos to you, and the words too. I was wondering too if perhaps you have a favourite rescue group and I could make a donation by way of thanks? Thanks Annie and her boyz
  24. Good luck SD, you will love it! Is it a camp over trial? Let us know how you go eh? LL, not sure if there will be any trials on in Vic when I am there, am coming Sth for the Nationals in SA also doing Eyre Peninsular for a holiday, an OT trial in Berri in SA then over to Godsown country (Vic) before heading Nth again for the heat/ humidity and build up and work for another 12 months! Will definately catch up with you though! Annie and her boyz
