  1. I feed a mixture of moist and dry food, (about 1 1/2 cups moist, plus 1 cup dry per day, plus chicken frame) but as for the dry, I alternate my dog between Supercoat and Pal and he loves them both. Then again, he's half lab - I'm sure he'd eat anything!
  2. Another question (haven't done the clip YET) Is a 'curved slicker brush' the correct brush for him? It was suggested to me at the obedience school. I got one today and used it on him, but he doesn't seem to like it very much. It's also brushing out a LOT of fur... like, I had to clean it out three times after just doing his back. Could it be pulling on his coat and hurting him?? Or maybe it just means that it IS the right brush if it's getting all the loose stuff out? It's just that he's always really liked being brushed... and he didn't like this one at all.... On the up side, his coat feels sooo soft and silky now!
  3. My dog started mouthing when I brushed him, about a week after I first brought him home (before his training.) It never really hurt, but it needed to stop. I actually posted a thread very similar to this one to ask for help with him He doesn't do it much at all after his training, but when he looks like starting, I give him a small tap on the muzzle with a loud "AH!" voice command and I then walk away from him and completely ignore him. He loves being brushed and just gets over excited especially when I brush around his chest/tummy, so now that he knows that mouthing = stop brushing, I hardly ever have a problem. I too used to put a toy in his mouth when he tried nipping, but it was brought to my attention that he would see it as a reward, so I stopped doing it.
  4. Also, I don't exercise my dog for two hours either side of a meal. Some people say no exercise for 1 hour either side of a meal is adequate, but I play it safe.
  5. I don't have a Dane, but with my Labradoodle I feed him twice a day so that he gets smaller amounts at a time. I try to mix his dry food with his moist food, so his dry food is not 'soaked' as such, but it means he's getting a mixture of dry and moist food and not just a tummy full of dry. Soaking might be better though, if it was recommended to you by the breeder then I would do it.
  6. Awesome.. thank you so much BC! I will post an AFTER picture... it should be interesting lol Thanks for all the tips!!
  7. Thanks heaps for your help everyone... and I love the chicken legs photo PW.. lol.. he is cute! I got myself another blade, and I still have the number 10, and I'm planning on clipping him next week! I'm a bit scared lol.. I took photos of him this weekend so that I can remember what he 'used' to look like in case I stuff up! So my plan is: number 4 all over number 10 at the base of tail, on the paws (but not up the legs) and around the eyes and mouth... I'm not exactly sure how that will turn out, but I figure those are the practical areas to do really short... I'll try not to get his eyelashes this time lol Are there any rules about whiskers? He has white whiskers but they sort of blend into his fur. Am I meant to leave him (like, are they important like they are to cats?) or are there no hard and fast rules? Thanks heaps guys I will post pictures when I've clipped him... possibly for your amusement... lol
  8. It's KONG TIME!!!! His first KONG, stuffed with cheese http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDrAGY1uCCk
  9. This was taken during a Christmas photo shoot for Assistance Dogs and Assistance Dogs in training http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRnGas16IL4
  10. Thank you, I will keep that in mind. The blades are kind of expensive though... if I need to let them cool down, I might just take a break. The clippers I have are Andis AGC2 - 2 Speed Clippers.
  11. Thanks I won't need the skip tooth then
  12. Yep, he is very energetic, I'm thinking of taking him to agility or something like that! The other dogs were ok, they were all just getting to know each other in their own way lol... they had only just met the day before :D
