  1. Thanks! Are the vitamin E tablets you give human or dog tablets? Would I get them from a chemist or vet?
  2. I think I've read somewhere that some people break a fish oil capsual and mix it into their dog's food sometimes. I just wanted to make sure that this is ok? Is it good for them and what does it do? How many mls or grams should I give and how often? He is a 27kg Lab x Poodle. Thanks guys
  3. Finally got my cats to like it! I make patties out of mince and complete mix for them It's great, they were on the thinner side before I put them on to complete mix, and have now plumped back up to what I would call a healthier weight.
  4. Not really. The vet says he sees about 4 cases a month. Is that a heavy tick area? No it doesn't sound as though it is, but if there are ticks, there are ticks. Maybe owners are more diligent with prevention in your area than other areas. 90% of my clients double up with a collar and a top spot. Oh so it's not uncommon to double up? Even with frontline plus once a fortnight (instead of once a month) plus a tick collar?? I was just worried about overloading his system
  5. Not really. The vet says he sees about 4 cases a month. Is that a heavy tick area? There are many vets in town though.
  6. I was advised by a vet to apply frontline every two weeks, AND have a tick collar on my dog at the same time. Isn't that like a major overload of chemicals? I want him to be safe from ticks but I'd be worried about overloading him
  7. I can't believe your dog justs eats it straight! My pup just looked at it and ran away.... I could have cried. My dog is 1/2 Lab.. but it did take him a bit to get used to it. I started by mixing about 1/4 of his recommended amount in with his normal food (reducing his normal food accordingly) and at first he turned his nose up at it too. But when he realised he wouldn't be getting anything else, he did eat it eventually. The next night, I did the same thing and he ate it a bit quicker. The next night, I increased the amount of Complete Mix, and he accepted it. It took about a week or a week and a half to gradually transfer him from his old dry food + raw meat, onto Complete Mix + raw meat. But yeah he eats it by itself now, he LOVES it and licks the bowl clean! The only thing I tend to do is, I add a bit more water than they recommend. I just find my dog prefers it that way. How long did you try getting your dog to eat it for, and was it introduced gradually? Don't give up if you tried for under a week or two! Just add it in slowly.
  8. Has anybody else had difficulty switching their cats to Complete Mix? I have tried everything, even adding a beef stock cube to the mixture. I have introduced it very slowly, and at the moment they are still only getting half the ration of Complete Mix mixed with chicken mince. And they will hardly touch it. But the weird thing is, one of the cats goes crazy for it when it's dry (he will jump on the counter top and steal it from the container when I have it out to weigh it before adding water.) But once water is added, he won't touch it. I don't let him eat much of it dry, I don't know if it's very good for them before it's hydrated? The cats are almost 9 years old and I'm wondering if they are just too old to change foods? They have mostly had canned cat food and kibble all their lives. But I really want to change them on to Complete Mix. The dog on the other hand, he loves Complete Mix. He eats it plain and then I give him his chicken afterwards.
  9. NoodleNut, sorry to hear that. I hope she is ok!!!
  10. You guys have me paranoid now lol It will be sausages for my dog tonight.. I know they're not really good for him, but I don't want him choking, and he eats so quickly!
  11. Hey TSD, good to see you too :D He is doing great, he has really grown up in the last few months! Has a really bad haircut atm though lol I tried to 'poodle' him and it kind of didn't work out :D
  12. Thanks :D They are frozen! I will try feeding them frozen and hold on to one end to make sure he chews. He is used to chicken frames so I hope it will be ok. Will take it off him if he starts being a guts!
  13. They are the basis of many of my dog's meals Blossom. You could try chicken frames for a larger dog. Thanks poodlefan and isiss :D He normally gets a chicken frame with his dinner, but the shop ran out of them when I went to get more. So I got chicken wings instead, and I'm hoping they will be ok. He is such a garbage guts, I guess I was just worried about him having something so small that he isn't as used to!
  14. Is it ok to feed raw chicken wings to my Lab x Poodle? I can't remember if someone told me it was ok or not! Thanks
  15. Thanks for the replies, sorry for being so late to respond, I have been away. I feed him a combination of raw and kibble, and the water is situated inside the house. He is indoors for most of the day, so not out in the heat very much . I guess I just thought being the size that he is, that he would drink more than he does. I estimate he drinks about 600ml - 800ml in 24 hours. I thought he should drink more than that, but I'm not sure? He only drinks at night after his dinner, and then around midnight, but never during the day. He is a Labrador size, so I was just wondering if that was normal. Thanks for the idea about flavouring the water, I might try it if I need to get him to drink more. How much do your dogs drink?
  16. Is it normal for my dog to only want to drink his water at night? He has water available throughout the day, but won't touch it, even after running around. I feed him at night, and about 30mins after his dinner he goes and has a very big drink, and he will have another drink during the night, and then won't really be interested in his water until the next night. I thought that was a bit odd, but is it normal?
  17. sorry about your dog marytea13, I hope it gets better soon Tess32 thank you for all your help - you have been a great source of info!! Off topic, but I just love Noah in your sig and avatar. What kind of Collie(?) is he? His colouring is gorgeous!
  18. Thanks guys. I will be in the centre of town mostly, going to a work conference. He will be treated with frontline plus anyway, but just wanted to know if I needed to be extra viligant in searching him each night. It sounds like we will be ok!
  19. Wondering if Toowoomba is a high tick area?
  20. I got this from a vaccine company rep. At least they aknowledge that some vets do the 3 yearly vaccinations! Finally!
  21. None of the vets believed me when I mentioned any of this... one of them told me that there are some 'out there' vets and owners who don't like the thought of vaccinating, but they are the dogs that end up with kennel cough. This is frustrating! All the vets are telling me the same (3 in Qld and I even phoned one in NSW because I have a friend who works there, and she had never heard of it, but she asked the vet for me.) So my next question is, is it possible to just get the kennel cough vaccination for your dog? Thanks for your help guys!
  22. Thanks everyone. He is 2 1/2. He had his puppy shots, then a booster in Feb last year (which was given a couple of months late - he had other owners back then), and the vet certificate says he is now due for another booster. I phoned a few vets and asked about 3 yearly boosters, but they all told me they had never heard of it and boosters had to be given yearly to be effective?? Do you guys have to go to special vets who give 'alternative' treatments to get somebody that does them 3 yearly? He is an assistance dog and goes with me everywhere, including where other dogs are, regularly. So I would say that he goes to high risk places. Another thing is that his pet insurance specifies that he needs to be vaccinated yearly otherwise he won't be covered. I want to do what's best for him though, I am getting a lot of conflicting information...
