  1. Hi All Just an update on the boy's tonsill delema! I took him back to the vet today, (I changed his appointment from tomorrow (sat, to today Fri) and I'm glad that I did!! After 10 days of antibiotics, the poor lovie's tonsills were only marginally improved, but they were still huge, very inflamed and discussion between the vet and myself went on over the best course of action........another course of antibiotics v tonsillectomy! the long and short of it was that he had his tonsills succesfully removed this afternoon, so now they can't cause any more hassles!!! Now he just has to recover from another anaesethetic, and be on a soft diet for a few days as one of them bled a bit, and had to be stitched!!! poor little chappie! Thats all for now
  2. Good luck with it Edgesmum. 1 of my oldies used to get Tonsilitis all the time and a slight slowing down in his eating was all we ever noticed. I know of another dog that was diagnosed with it after he went to the vet due to a seizure - had shown no signs at all and the seizure was likened to a febrile convulsion in people. He had his tonsils removed and has been fine since. Thanks Piper, Will let you know how he goes when I see you at a show!!! I haven't had him entered in many shows for a while! I thought he just didn't like the showring!!! but he was feeling good the other week and showed his little fluffy butt off!!!! and came home with a 14 point BOB!! He was coughing again last night and off his food again!! guess he's not feeling well again, and he finished his antibiotocs this morning!
  3. Thanks for that guys! now I think about it, his eating only a small amount of food at any one time, and his coughing when drinking, etc! he's obviously had this problem for a while, and he'd lost his spark when being shown, but if he wasn't feeling well, that would account for that! I thougth he just didn't enjoy showing! now I feel so horrible thinking he's been unwell for a while and I didn't pick up on it! but there was nothing like a raging temp or anything else to alert me! he is seeing the vet again on Saturday, to get them checked again which is when we will discuss his tonsilectomy. again thanks for the information and support/
  4. Just wondering how many dogs suffer from Tonsilitis without us even knowing?? I took my poor little man to the vet, for something totally unrelated, and when he looked at the back of his throat, the poor little mans tonsils were almost touching, and very inflamed! The vet said that if the antibiotics don't work, he might have to have a tonsilectomy.........poor little chappie!! Apart from the occasional cough when drinking cold water, (which I tend to do as well) he had no other symptoms. He has always been a very dainty eater for a boy, nothing like my bitches who are total piggies! So I guess my question is.........how often does tonsilitis get diagnosed in dogs, and what have been the outcomes if anyone's dogs have had to have their tonsils removed?? Thanks for your responses in advance!
  5. Before you go to the vet, see if you can collect a specimen of urine to take with you! I know you are thinking......how the hell am I going to get my dog to wee!!!! here is what you do..........very simple!! Go to a pathology collection centre (Gribbles, IMVS or such) or your local GP (see the receptionist not the dr) and ask them for a paediatric urine collection bag and a yellow top urine container. when you get home, peel the sticky side off the paediatric bag and stick it over her fanny! once she does a wee, simply peel off the bag, then snip the end off the bag and pour it into the yellow top specimen container! easy! she will walk funny, but I did this with my old Australian Cattle Dog bitch, and being a nurse and working in GP's rooms, it was easy for me to take the stuff needed home. I didn't have a pan to run around behind her with and also I have a frozen shoulder so that would have been impossible for me to do anyway!!! IT REALLY WORKS WELL, is simple to do, that way your vet will be able to test her urine there and then! your vet will be impressed by your methods!!! mine was!!! Humping can be a dominance thing, and if she has just been desexed, it could be her hormones in a state of fluctuation still. I have a motto.................'if in doubt.............check it out' Good luck with her! try the urine collection as above! I'll watch out to see what happens!
  6. Sounds like a combination of hormones and age related dominance.........trying to find her place in the pack! My young bitch humps my dog for about 3 weeks after she's been in season!...........he just lies there and looks at her as if to say...........yeah......get off when you've finished! doesn't faze him at all! but then again he's not dominant!!!
  7. Hey Panda! good dog! but the photo is deceiving..........a German Spitz or a Jap Spitz??? I have 4 Germans!!! He's a Japanese Spitz. Japanese Spitz only come in white. Wow! 4 German spitzs..I'm so jealous, we used to see a black German Spitz, but he's now living in Queensland. He was really cute. Btw, not only I feed my dog sardine in spring water, I feed myself, too I don't like it on its own so I turn it in to sardine salad with balsamic vinegar. The reason I choose sardine is because smaller fish, such as sardines and herring, are most likely to be free from mercury accumulation. When buying them canned, look for ones packed in their own oil, olive oil, or water rather than in soybean or cottonseed oil, which are not as good for you. The whole fish offer the benefit of calcium because you eat their bones. They have the most omega-3s. I don't like them in oil because it's too fatty. Thought so Panda, although the pic is small on my PC!! I have a chocolate boy, 2 cream girls and a black girl!...............at the moment!!!! you just can't stop at 1 spitz!!!!!
  8. Hey Panda! good dog! but the photo is deceiving..........a German Spitz or a Jap Spitz??? I have 4 Germans!!! I buy my guys Sardines in Oil! just the Woolies home brand ones.....3 tins for about $1.50, they get it once a fortnight! and they absolutly LOVE it!!! don't drain the oil out! just mush it in with their dry food!!!
  9. Hi Blacklabrador The information on the container for the Biolac Coat Improver says: Product Analysis Protien 40% Lipid 10% Carbohydrate 40% Vitamin, Minerals 10% Energy 1700kj/100 grams Preparation: Large Dogs - 2 scoops Small Dogs - 1 scoop Simply spread over dry food daily I find they like it mixed in a little warm water as a drink! Hope that helps gem
  10. Ane I have bought LSA from Woolworths.......in the section where you get all the natural stuff........like gluten free and real 'healthy' stuff, not where the vitamins etc are tho! I use about 1/2 a teaspoon each day for each dog, and I have german Spitz which are not huge dogs! A girlfriend of mine also uses it with her Kelpies and gives them 1 teaspoon per dog, each day! good luck
  11. I have a litter of 3 spitz babies at the moment, 11days old. The smallest has her eyes open and is already standing and all be it very shakey on her legs is walking! the middle one has her eyes half open, and is up and trying to walk around, and the biggest one, is the lazy one! she doesn't want to see the world just yet!!! I'd give her another day or two!!!
