  1. That would be Dual Ch Hubertus Easy Rider owned by Mark Huehn (who apparently didn't even have a gun licence when he got the pup to possibly hunt with!) and bred by Agnes Pali. Dual Ch Hanafor Nyari Tama (F) UD owned by Ben & Marlene Rankin and bred by Faye Harris also won the 1991 Victorian State Field Trial Championship and the NSW Field Trial Championship earning him the Victorian Gundog Field Trial Dog of the Year award! Warren and Kerry McKay (Aranyoz Vizslas) have been quite involved in field trialing Vizslas in QLD. They put the first two Field Champion titles on V's in Australia. That was some time ago but Warren now has a young bitch I believe he's training up for field work, so maybe you'll see some in the field again up there. Thanks for the congrats on the Retrieving. We're still very much Novices and have our first restricted trial this weekend We have enjoyed it, but it certainly is a Lab dominated sport..
  2. Oi! My 'orange coloured GSP' has shown up more than a few of the liver ones at retrieving trials However, I don't pretend he is actually a working bred dog. Victorias field trial dog of the year in 2003 was a Vizsla though! I wont tell you about our last trial when we were in the paddocks after it finished and I went and physically lifted my boy of a beautiful point on what I had convinced myself was a snake.. to see the quail then flush I think it's me that's not working bred...
  3. baileykira, it sounds like you're in a great position to give your Brit a chance do do some field work! The question about getting retrieving dummies was recently posted on the Australian Working Retriever Central Bulletin Board and the suggestion of John & Vicki Lawton at Specialized Dog Accessories in Melton , Vic was made. Johns email is [email protected]
  4. Contacting the Club L'Epagneul Breton Inc. in Victoria http://www.clubbreton.com.au/ would probably be a good idea also. They are very much into Field and Retrieving trials, not showing.
  5. It is probably best if you do have a gun licence, yes. I have one for retrieving trials. I do believe that in the rules though you can have someone shoot for you, but I hear it is fairly uncommon practice. I am sure you can expose the dog (and yourself) to the sport before commiting to owning a licence and a gun. It may be enough to get a person hooked
  6. If you want to try something that will truly 'suit her' and she will most likely lurve.. I'd suggest Utility field trials, or as a second Retrieving. It is amazing to see these dogs doing (and loving) what they were orignally bred for...
  7. Why not try it all! Brittanys, like most of the Utility Gundogs, are capable of having a go at just about any dog sport! What are you interested in?
  8. Could not agree more with Sidoney. Do not slow your dog down. Does your instructor encourage you slowing your dog??
  9. Not all training clubs main priorityis trialing! My local club has over the past 10 years changed it's syllabus several times, aiming it at pet dog training more and more. This page doesn't go into details of classes, but what the classes are aimed at http://www.actcdc.org.au/classes.asp Senior level training, which doesn't start until your 4th session at earliest, starts to focus on trialing exercises, the lower on pet training. Obedience trials prove that your dog can complete a number of exercises succesfully in an artificial environment. Are the exercises useful? Not always. They have evolved from practical exercises (so I'm told ). An obedience titled dog doesn't mean it's a well behaved pet though I have seen on numerous occasions dogs that are succesful trialers exhibit many undersirable behviours outside the ring! My own 'obedience dogs' are known to pull me along the path at the dog club
  10. Yep, am entirely aware of that and don't believe that's the reason in the cases I'm talking about.
  11. Would this be the same as when a dog drools while doing agility? I have seen it mainly in what I term 'high drive' dogs of working breeds - manic bc & kelpies mainly. You can see the drool as they are on course etc. They are certainly highly aroused and look to be having a great time..
  12. Bummer Peri. I have heard a number of dogs from the Flyball Nationals have come down with it :D Is that where you think your guys were exposed?
  13. Sounds like a great service. My guys get a quite varied diet, including the occasional kibble meal So, I'm quite happy to go with what they are feeding when boarded, as it's the same as they feed their own dogs. My older guy who lost 2.5kgs in 4 days at another kennel while on food I provided (a kennel that gave good care) now gains weight at my friends place. I guess it comes down to how comfortable he is where he's staying...
  14. The whole thing was a disaster! The people weren't there when we went to drop him off so we had to wait an hour. When we picked him up his bed that I left was saoking in urine, I wonder if he was let out of the concrete run!? Plus the food issue. Poor boy, we should have never left him there Thankfully all the boarding kennels run around here seem much better
  15. On the odd occasions that I board my dogs it is with a friend who has a few extra runs. I take out frozen chicken frames for their bone meals, and if I took out frozen veggie meals they would feed them too. But, I never board for long and I let my boys have a kibble meal instead of vegies, which also has chicken mince added. It may be a bit lazy of me, but I think of it as a treat (my dogs love commerical food )and as I get a great deal on the boarding I don't want to put the people to too much trouble. I boarded my older guy at a kennel for a few days up North while we were on holidays. I took out food for him for each day. When I picked him up he did the biggest 'canned dog food poop' I'd ever seen I wonder where the food I took out went too..
  16. Do you mean you are giving her a second verbal stay in training? Or perhaps you are going into the dog and rewarding her in the sit stay before a minute is up? So your training is different to what you do in trials? Is she relying on more than one cue?
  17. I too have found Tony and Marilyn to be wonderful at that awful time. I had a very pleasent chat over the phone to Marilyn about Twiggy after they picked her up from the vets. She chatted about how lovely Whippets were and their experiences. Tony has been the one to deliver the ashes and alwaygives you some time, you never feel rushed. Both my girls urns are sitting on the shelf behind me, the big and the small :D I certainly hope I dont have to use their services again any time soon though....
  18. BoxerTrouble is Demi itchy when she has the lumps? My young V breaks out in 'hives' which look a lot like that picture, but they're never itchy. He is itchy at the moment though (with no lumps) and I'm afraid aloveen hasn't helped
  19. Thanks catzatsea, that is what I supsected. I guess I'm a little cautious because I had an older bitch titred some years ago and she actually came back low on the distemper anitbodies and would have needed vaccination. I don't think we titred the hepatitis at all, and unfortunately she died (unrelated reasons) before we got the first results anyway... so I wonder if she would have needed hepatitis vaccination too...
  20. Canine Parvovirus and Canine Distemper. Thanks  So, you didn't worry about Hepatitis, or did you vaccinate? When I enquired at my local vet earlier this year, this one was the expensive one. Taken from a post done in May (by me)
  21. I get my chicken carcasses from Tom's Poultry on Isa St Fyshwick for $5 for 10kg (50C a kilo).
  22. becks & catzatsea what exactly did you have titred?
  23. I do not personally compete with a Dobermann but have seen several regularly at local obedience and agility trials. They certainly are capable of competing well in both arenas. While at the Agility Nationals in Perth this year, I was impressed with several Dobermanns competing at the top level (Masters). Although not beating the top bc's they were more than capable of making course times and among the fastest of the large dogs.
  24. I used to run the vacuum over my Spinone when I was vacuuming the floors. It sucked up some hair, but not much and I doubt it would do anything for fleas. Maybe my vacuum cleaner wasn't powerful enough! She certainly still shed everywhere.
