  1. I would suggest you get a copy of the new Puppy - Petr or Pest? Its a great D.V.D. and should help you tremendously. You can get a copy direct from Bonnie's Dog Obedience The Gap. Brisbane. Where is your pup sleeping at night? Is it confined in a crate? If not why not? You need to keep a young pup around you but in a pen. You can buy and use something like a childs playpen, and put the pup in there, that way you get some peace and quiet. If you want more information, find a good puppy school and take him along,l Best of luck. Bonmedia.
  2. I can't help but agree with the other person who answered. Medical check first, then have a look at how much your control over the dog may have slipped over the past 3 years. Sometimes we start off well, but as the dog never seems to give us any trouboe we slack off a little and olar, we are suddenly have trouble of some discription as the dog matures. Have you done any Obedience Training with him? Perhaps if not, you should look at doing some. Get a copy of the book "Who's the Boss"? This will help you to understand more. Best of luck. Bonmedia.
  3. Hi from Bonmedia. If you live in the Brisbane area, would isuggest you get in touch with Bonnies Dog Obedience. Val Bonney has been training dogs and solving problems for nearly 30 years and is very good at what she does. Phone number is 33002959. Good luck. Bonmedia.
  4. Be careful using Citronella collars. Make sure your dog ids not alergic to them. Have known an owner to come home to a dog wearing one which had choked to death from an allergic reaction. Bonmedia.
  5. If you get the opportunity to attend Steve's Seminar - do so. He is one of the best Presenters you will come across, and his knowledge is great across the board. Sorry I cant be there. Regards to you all. Val Bonney (Canine behavioural Specialist/International Trainer.)(Queensland.)
  6. I dont reside in your state so I cant help you with a physical puppy school, but I highly recommend the new Puppy D.V.D. Pet or Pest by Val Bonney. Brisbane. It is a great D.V.D. covering birth, 1st 7 weeks of a puppies life, and then what you can expect from a puppy class. I know she has her D.V.D.'s and the book "Who's the Boss"? on ebay. The book will tell you why the dog does the things it does and how to go about preventing problems before they even arise. This is equipment every dog owner should have. Bonmedia.
  7. Hasving owned German Shepherds for nearly 30 years, my advice is. if you are not going to SHOW then get him castrated NOW. People tend to thing - leave things go a while and they will just disappear. I"m sorry they don't. They only gert worse. As a behavioural consultant, it sounds to me like your PACK STRUCTURE is totally out of whack and this needs to be rectified as soon as possible. German Shepherds are great dogs, and I love them, but they will take advantage whenever they can. You have to become a consistent, fair, calm and constant owner. Set the rules and both you and your husband have to abide by them. More dogs are relinquished to shelters, because of bad behaviour than for any other reason, and it is up to you to take CONTROL now. Get a copy of the book "Who's the Boss"? This will assist you tremendously. Val Bonney at The Gap in Qld. has these books and you can get one from her. Some Obedience Clubs have them also. GET ONTO IT NOW or you will possibly lose your beautiful dog because you wont be able to control him. This is brief, but important part covered. Bonmedia.
  8. Hi, As others have advised chewing sticks is not a good idea. If one gets stuck in mouth or throat you are in trouble. Try setting puppy up. Place a few sticks around in a clump, and cover them with some foul tasting substance. ( Chilli, Hot Pepper ) or something like that. See if that will assist with the problem. You will have to watch him when you do this, and be prepared to spend a little time. Its never really known why, but some dogs will always want to chew sticks. Hope this helps. Bonmedia.
  9. The book "Who's the Boss?" is great for new dog/puppy owners. Suggest you get yourself a copy.
  10. Would suggest you get hold of the book Who's the Boss"? This will assist you greatly.
  11. Crqate Traning is an ideal way to go. It gives the dog a space that is totally theirs. As your dog is an older dog, it may take a little while for it to get used to the crate. Always make it a nice special place to be. Use it at night to start with, and cover the crate with some form of cover (Sheet etc) to make it a little darker as dogs enjoy the peace that darkness brings to them. Try this, and when it is successful ast night time, use it in the day for short bursts to start with. Let me know how you go, and I can give you more info if you need it.
  12. Quote:- There is an excellent book called "Who's the Boss"? It has been said this is a book all dog owners should have. There is also a new D.V.D. Puppy Pet or Pest being released early January;. Would suggest that either or both of these is the way to go. Bonmedia.
  13. Quote from Bonmedia. Have read some of the answers you have received. All sound solid and good information. Perhaps you could tether the dogs before the visitors walk outside, and get them to just ignore the dogs for a few minutes. They they could sit and talk to them for a further few minutes, and let the dogs off, once they are calm Have found this usually works well.
  14. Reply to Redmum. from Bonmedia. An excellent book which all dog owners should have is "Who's the Boss"? It tells WHY the dog does the things it does and HOW to solve problems even before they arise. Hope it helps.
