  1. We have been showing and breeding Shar Pei for over 20 years. In that time we have seen changes in the breed for the better with dedicated breeders and deplorable results from others.

As usual the need for sensationalism and emotional responses has ensured the press has not let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Our statistics clearly show the incidence of entropian surgery is NOT 80%. Please remember the rules for show dogs prohibit exhibition of dogs who have had "cosmetic" surgery.

It has been a long time in our part of the country since I have heard of anyone getting that price for a pet puppy and I have never paid anything near their quoted cost of entropian surgery. At that I have combined desexing with entropian and still come in far under $2000.

I do wonder if some of the dumping comes about when a puppy has cost less than the cost of surgery. There is much more I would be happy to discuss but will end with a plea to drop the emotionalism and the idea that regulations will cure all problems. In most cases this results in affecting those who are trying to improve the breed and the exploiters continue their own way.

the bolded bit. just because something is not allowed under the rules does not mean it doesn't occur

  2. thanks Nek. The dog on the front page doesn't look that wrinkly to me, but some of them in the current breed list are very wrinkly indeed.

For the life of me I can't understand the "I love this breed so I'll breed dogs that have to have surgery just so they can see" mentality. I put them in the same boat as BYB's deliberately breeding runts and marketing them as teacups. Putting looks/trends before health is unethical no matter which way you look at it.

    I completely agree.

IMO no one who loves dogs could breed them knowing that they were destined to be in pain or to require an op to see properly.

What have we become when we think it is acceptable to do a preventative eye op on a puppy rather than breed a puppy that did not need the op?

  3. I would get an xray first - before the cartrophen injections. You need to know what you are dealing with before you start treatment for "whatever"..

You're right, in away (this just my opinion) however I don't think Cartrophen/Pentosan does any harm to try, even if it doesn't prove to target the problem. But the thing is, if it does and the lameness is resolved as a result, then it at least gives you an idea you are on the right track without having to have taken your dog down the GA & Xray exposure path for potentially nothing.

As I mentioned, this is just my opinion but it is not a 'blanket' opinion for all cases.

This is exactly what my friends vet said

  4. I know people who have had the vet give cartophen injections which have worked better in their opinion than the Sacha's blend.

One dog that I have seen has no limp anymore.

Swimming is supposed to help as it is low impact exercise so maybe try that as well as the mental exercise.

  5. True PF. I don't like that a puppy dies either. I wonder if free registration would work?

Years ago the council used to door knock to check on registered dogs, so I think there are more unregistered dogs around so this might not make any difference.

I do not mean to sound heartless but lots of dogs die every day, what makes these pups any different?

There is no one easy solution to these issues. What's needed is a range of approaches.. some carrot some stick.

Dogs may die every day but each deserves a chance of life if its offered. This pup is one of the lucky ones.

Yes I agree. I am always interested in how to do things better and this one is a difficult situation to think of a way to stop the practice.

I even have trouble with mandatory desexing because in some cases it isn't good for a dog to be desexed too early yet it is one way to stop indiscriminate whelping.

There are always at least two sides to every story....would be easier for me if I saw things in black and white :)

  6. To stop elephants being killed for their tusks there is a ban on trading ivory. Stop the consumption and you stop the trade.

For every dog taken it encourages the "breeder"

To stop this happening NO dogs should be taken off people like this.

    EFS

Sorry but a ban on trading ivory keeps elephants alive.

A ban on giving a BYB pup a home will mean its death. I'm not comfortable with that.

I think a slightly longer term strategy would be a better option.

Imagine a world in which desexing your dog meant free council registration - that would be a good start.

  8. I know what country folk are like, and the working dogs earn there place the fact of this situation it was done in the public eye the killing.

If he didn't want the dogs there were deffinatley other options available. To me he is another back yard breeder which i know a lot of counrty people are he shouldn't have had the pups in the first place without having homes available first.

if he wanted a pup out of the litter he should have got one from a reputable breeder with proven working lines.

This puppy was about to be drowned in public because he didn't want to take it back with him, what a pedi excuse, not because it didn't work because he was to lazy to deal with it the humain way.

Catherine, I am sorry but you just don't seem to "get it".

You are talking about this killing/drowning as "fact" when you were not there to know for certain that this happened.

You have strong opinions about someone you have never met, and yet you only have hearsay on which to base your opinions.

There is a possibility that what you were told happened never happened at all.

These are allegations made by somebody else and passed on to you and others. With or without malice. And the person making the allegations wont go to the police.

    True allegations? Or false allegations?

Do you see why it is all a little suss?

If pups were drowned in public at a sale yard then the NSW Police or the RSPCA should be interested in the matter! They are the people to contact.

No calls for information from the web, witchhunt style, NO, if there are facts to be told, tell them to the NSW Police or the RSPCA and let them do the investigating.

Believe it or not, that is what they are PAID to do.

Oh yes, by the way ...... many of us also "know" what country folk are like, in fact, many of us are indeed country folk.

Many of us and our rellies drive utes.

Many of us and our rellies have kelpies.

Many of us and our rellies go to saleyards.

And some of us and our rellies even live in the Tamworth area.

But we don't drown dogs at saleyards.

If the person with the rescued pup does not have the guts to provide registration numbers to the police, etc, then there is not a lot anyone can do, but that does not give you the right to point the finger at people from Tamworth generally.

    Souff

    :laugh::eek::thumbsup: ;) :) :p

  9. Not to be a mood dampener but wouldn't your lab x now be at risk of anything this 'seemingly healthy' but likely unvacc'd pup has?

I only ask because of the quarantine issue I have been reading about so much.

Only if the resident dogs were not vaccinated and wormed regularily.

what about ringworm..that can be transferred not only to other dogs but humans

  10. May I ask what people think of the option of having your dogs on extenda leads as a solution for people who want their dogs to be able to roam while on their walk?

I have a DA dog as a result of three attacks in six months, when she was seven months old. :( We deliberately avoid the areas where I know dogs roam from their properties. I also have a dog who loves everybody and everything, to the point of squeaking in anticipation of a greeting. To allow them the ability to sniff the area while walking, I walk them separately on an extenda lead (yep double the exercise for me). This means that should I see trouble approaching in the form of an other dog, whether on or off lead, I have the ability to get them close to me and under strict control. That way they remain safe and the other dogs/owners remain safe, and everybody can have an enjoyable walk.

I do not like extenda leads....in my council area it is clearly stated everywhere that dogs must be on a leash of no more than 2 metres long so extending a leash longer than that is not allowable.

I do not believe extenda leads are safe after my dog (when she was a puppy) got spooked one day and took off, turned around a pole which whipped the lead out of my hand.

she ended up on the road and it was only because I had taught her to stop on an emergency word that saved her from being run over.

I never used an extenda lead after that.

  11. I wonder if they are only talking about their members, ie PIAA pet shops and they are not talking about all the other pet shops that sell animals?

If so then they are only telling us a very small part of the story.

I also wonder how many PIAA pet shops there are?

From what I can see The press release does not qualify PIAA pet shops but is using the term pet shop generically and the figures they quote are for the entire industry not just their members.

PIAA doesnt have that many members - especially those who are pet shops.

About 300 Australia wide - last time I looked.

I thought they might just be representing their members. They are taking a huge risk representing all pet shops who sell live animals.

  12. No champ, I'm not. How many assaults have you investigated and taken to court? Tell me how you'd prove beyond a reasonable doubt that in a one on one incident with no witnesses that it wasn't a case of self defence?

    By cross examining you.

I'd be looking to prove that as a use of force trained police officer with training in non-violent conflict resolution that when yelled at by an old guy than you reacted in anger rather than fear for your safety.

    I'd rate my chances.

    x2.

Given the circumstances where a person has the ability to leave a scene but chooses to assault a person instead they would never be able to use self defense as a reason that has indeed been the case in the past in several cases

I agree too. If the person has the ability to leave. I'm talking about a situation where this is not the case.

What a joke talk about changing things to suit your position...

For the upteenth time, I wouldn't strike anyone for simply verbally abusing me, which I've already clarified.

It wouldn't get to court. I've been cross examined by much smarter men and women than you and being an honest person, I've never had a drama.

So if someone comes up to you and you think they will assault you, or if you attempt to walk away you'll cop a whack to the back of the head, you'd do what exactly?

Assumptions much? You are new here and have no idea who you are speaking to nor what our backgrounds are.

You are back peddling at 100 kpm's an hour

  15. Anyone in your area taken up the bagpipes? That'll do it.

At what time of day is the howling occuring?

LOL... I can say this is actually true....given my heritage and propensity to listen to the pipes some dogs do not like them at all :)

Someone started up near an agility trial in Sutherland some years back.. the sound of howling dogs soon drowned out the pipes!

No idea why they would do that :( :( ;)

It is an acquired sound isn't it? Poor Aussie dogs having not been brought up with the sound probably think there is a dangerous wild beast around that we need warning about ;)

  17. Was that little rant directed at me? I am confused. If you are asking me "am I for real?" then yes, I am. You come up to me aggressively within striking distance - regardless of whether you have a right to be angry or not - and IF I perceive that as a threat, then yes, I will defend myself if I feel it's appropriate. Let's not get off topic though, hey?

You seem very aggressive and very quick to "defend" yourself. So what would your dog be doing as you beat someone off?

Would your dog join in on the attack?

Talk about making a situation worse than it needs to be...what happened to walking away and calling the appropriate authorities.
