  1. Because no one has ever complained loudly enough? Because of the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ of rego fees? Devil's Advocate: My kennel name includes the word Black does that mean I'm breeding for Black (which isn't possible in a SBT anyway ) true about the Black . i just wish that we could tell new puppy buyers to go to a registered breeder and know we were sending them to an ethical, checked out breeder eta i think the dollars do make a difference but when the governing body isn't worried about the betterment of the breed it isn't being a good role model for breeders
  2. Firstly, breeding dogs under the ANKC banner is not an industry A hobby at best, an obsession is perhaps acceptable. Secondly the code of ethics which I think is an ANKC one as opposed to an individual state one? clearly states that breeders will breed only with the intention of improving the breed - the deliberate breeding of generations dogs which can not possibly have the correct pigment as required in the breed standard can't possibly be construed as an improvement. i agree so why does the ankc allow puppies from blue to blue matings to be registered? eta and why do they allow sbt kennels to have the word blue in their name when clearly they are breeding for colour?
  3. What is the answer then? I'm not trying to be funny, it's a serious question. How would you stop people being rude? when the day comes that breeding a champion dog doesn't mean people are seen as a great breeder and winning by cheating is just not on the "sport" of showing dogs will die out if it doesn't change dramatically because younger people will not want to be around this sort of behaviour
  4. yes i have a look that makes all children behave. my daughter is grown now and will gleefully tell tales of what that look does even to strange children who are behaving badly in public....and i never utter a word it is a gift ;) I too have always done 'the look'.. and it worked very well. Now they are much taller than me and adults.. I get " :D MUm! are you doing the look??' together with laughter :D .. I would get in trouble working in a school when a child did or was about to do something NAUGHTY and I'd be on auto and go ARGHH! (like I do with the dogs to stop them in their tracks.. ) I dont see anything wrong with it? ;) but apparantly..... you are meant to quietly ASK the dear little child to leave the rock there and please don't throw it at Johnny again because... .... :D me too monah :D a good oi or aargh!!! goes a long way. my daughter says to me now "are you giving me the look?" i have friends with twins and they always want me to look after them cause they go home in a good mood and really well behaved....and the kids always want to visit me.... kids feel so much safer when they know the boundaries. i feel sorry for kids that don't have them how on earth do they know what to rebel against

  6. i suspect the the other dogs whatever are watching and seeing how this is going and before long every state will have an accredited breeder program
  7. i suspect you are right steve. i had hoped that them being accredited breeders they may have had a higher standard to attain. this system leaves a lot to be desired.
  8. Why would you ask me that? That's the question you ask of the accrediting body. wasn't really asking you but just thought we were having a conversation :D
  9. Accreditation can be given....& taken away. The grounds on which it can be revoked need to be written into any accreditation program. Then, whomsoever monitors the system can, quite legally, strip an individual of that privilege. 'Struck off' the accredited members register. i would like to report this breeder, how do i do this? Processes around questioning/losing accreditation, need to be written into any such system, equally with the processes for gaining accreditation. so does this mean there is nothing i can do at this time?

  11. the problem with the accreditation scheme is that there is little confidence in it from the beginning because some of the accredited breeders are seen as less than ethical. one of them is advertising on their web site that they will be selling puppies under aapbd rules and without ankc papers
  12. my dog sleeps on the bed just about every night. sometimes if i am having a restless nights sleep i put her in her crate.....she makes zero fuss when she needs to be crated. she knows i am the boss and she has no bad behaviours. sleeping on the bed isn't the issue...if i want jaxx off the bed and she protested then the issue isn't the bed it's me.
  13. i went to a show on the weekend and i saw lots of dogs that were dyed and powdered to within an inch of their lives (and they won)...not sure what showing under those conditions proves
  14. yep that's what i use or Oi..more about tone and sounds than words
  15. I had a dog staying with me for a bit and she broke into the pantry one day and tried to eat arborio rice. I swear to god one of my dogs came and warned me about it. It was hilarious. She really looked like she was dobbing on the 'intruder' i have had a dobber dog before and they do tell on the naughty dogs ;) i think we humanise dogs because the language we use does this, we speak using words that we are familiar with and that others understand...doesn't mean that this is bad for the dogs
  16. What "other proffessionals"??? A reference from your vet is the only requirement from a professional , whoop whoop. A reference about what. Mr ABC brings me puppies once a month for vaccination and pays their account on time is a reference. "Reference" from another breeder - the other breeder doesn't have to be accredited or have any experience or any qualification other than they managed to fluke their way through a stupid open book test and managed to think up a prefix no one else had registered. Of the two, the latter is the harder one. References from 2 puppy buyers. Is it OK if they're my mum and my brother? Is it OK if the pups are only 10 weeks old (owners of 10 week old puppies almost always think the breeder of their puppy is great). Is it OK if the puppy buyers actually have no clue at all that they have been ripped off big time for substandard animals at inflated prices? Your faith in the system is what I am laughing at. I have spent the last 32 years and more money than I even want to consider improving the health and temperament of my chosen breed to say nothing of the physical soundness of the dogs I breed. There is nothing in the accredited breeders scheme that requires people to breed from dogs which have been health tested, are mentally sound, even vaguely represent the breed they are meant to in any way shape or form. No knowledge of the breed is required AT ALL. Not sure how your 15 years of maybe thinking about perhaps owning a dog I might breed from qualifies you to even begin to judge a system you patently do not understand. i agree with everything you have said but especially the bolded bit. imo it is only when health checks are demanded that we will start getting somewhere
  17. well the public will because they don't know any better. given kennel clubs don't appears to kick out dodgy members anyway, what makes you think they don't have dodgy accredited breeders? eta i wonder if a member of the public has any come back to cccq if they buy an ill dog from a dodgy accredited member?
  18. Why do you think its a good thing? Personally i think its a good thing because it will help weed out the breeders whom do not meet the standards and the mills and also for the puppy purchaser. The buyer can look see that there are lets say 100 breeders listed and only 5 accredited breeders listed who are you going to spend your $1500 with. I think im going for the accredited breeder everytime. i strongly suspect it will do nothing to weed out good from bad breeders
  19. i totally agree with this PF. i think head collars are cruel and dangerous especially when people can buy them without getting any instructions and they use them readily because they are seen as a "kind" tool
  20. that's what i was thinking although enough of us have said it is very dangerous advice
  21. yep, resent the child and be confused and nervous then maybe bite the kid to keep it away before the punishment comes.. this was the worst advice i have heard
  22. What is a "level 9 correction"? What article did you copy and paste that from - it wasn't in the Leerburg article you linked to? click on the ebook on the same page. Sounds like many of you don't know even how to correct a dog or the levels involved I don't know about you but a full strength correction from me and I'm an average built guy would never seriously hurt a dog. A leash correction is only using the lower part of your arm not your whole body. I have yet to ever have a fully grown large dog wince in pain to a very hard correction from myself. I have had dogs of shy temperaments shut down for a moment but they bounce back with a bit of encouragement. I and my parents have ran the RSPCA animal shelter in Burnie tasmania many years ago. I and my father have trained a lot of dogs with different temperaments from shy to aggressive and yes I have been bitten a few times over the years but at the end of the day I have always achieved results. me and my father have saved alot of dogs from being PTS. Back then I never even used treats in my training but over the years I have learned different things and I am still learning. As I stated before It was only an idea of probably many methods that would work. What on earth would prompt you to physically correct a shy dog that hard? I can tell you as the owner of an abused and extremely shy (and usually aggressive as a last resort) dog, that you would not have a hand if you tried it on him. Force should not be used on animals with temperaments like this. Especially not with a prong collar! and even worse, i think those dogs were probably re-homed to an unsuspecting public
