  1. I read the Leerburg article you linked to and it didn't outline a method like the one you suggested at all. In fact, it actually said at the start to use food or toy rewards to train the dog to begin with. There were at least six other points and methods he suggested and only briefly did he mention giving a prong collar correction in SOME situations. The fact is that you have no idea what is and isn't appropriate to the OP's dog's temperament, give a hard physical correction to a softer dog and you could ruin it for life. I know quite a few trainers who regularly use prongs, e-collars etc but none of them would recommend the method you have suggested. ETA: Giving a dog an "extremely hard correction as hard as you can" on a correction collar for going near a baby's clothing sounds like abuse to me... just how hard is as hard as you can?? indeed, what if it's a small dog and i am 180cm? maybe i would break the dogs neck
  2. I will bold that bit for the people who aren't getting my point. I have never abused a dog in my life and giving a hard correction appropriate to the dogs temperament is not abusive in my book. All you so called trainers telling me my method and one that is advised by a renowned dog trainer is dangerous explain to me and the OP why it is and what the problem with it is. I like hearing other peoples ideas and opinions. Otherwise just shut up. so when you can't get your point across you think you will yell at us...you have no idea at all
  3. Wow, I guess I don't know any proper trainers, then, since I don't think I know any trainers who would advise that. You probably don't. What would your trainer advise distract the dog with a cookie When a dog does something it is not supposed to do a correction is needed pretty simple really. I told the OP to get advise from a good trainer and not to attempt the above alone. It was only given as an example of what has worked for me and to back it up I put in a link from the leerburg website that states something similar. The method does work I have used it on all my dogs when I have had small children. Time to start treating dogs like dogs people all this over complicating things is really a joke. Dog training in the last 15 years has gone to pieces. My opinion is you can not train a dog properly without negative reinforcement. If somebody has a different opinion they are welcome to it and I respect it. In my experience the results from positive reinforcement training only may be similar but what happens if the distraction is greater then the food reward the whole process goes to pieces. I am really getting sick of this site people ask for advise and then you get shot down with stupid comments. If some body posted a positive only method of dealing with the problem I would not shoot the poster down with negative comments I would still offer my own advise and let the OP choose what type of trainer they would go to for help. We are all different and we all have different methods of training the OP sounds smart enough to know to contact a professional. I think she is only looking for differences of opinion not a problem solve over the internet. no one is saying positive only just that your methods are dangerous as is the advice you give. if you are sick of this site you are free to leave it
  4. i find your posts to give out quite dangerous advice. i really think you need to be very careful about what you advise given you haven't even seen this dog.
  5. Because they're not a regulatory body. They cannot act outside of their function. They're not copping out. People can't just create enforcement powers out of thin air. The ANKC is a co-ordinating body. Not a government empowered regulator of the public's activities. "Australian National Kennel Council has developed co-operation between the 8 Controlling Bodies and made a large contribution towards improving dog showing, breeding and other canine activities in Australia" See their website for full details of what they actually are: http://www.ankc.org.au/default.aspx If you have a read of "history" it might make things a little clearer. There isn't always someone else to blame or to take charge. Sometime we need to stand up and say - "that person is a jerk, I don't agree with what they are doing and will not participate, so I will promote others to hopefully do the same". People in our society are quick to point a finger and say "someone" should fix that. Yet we are just as likely to turn around and complain about some other infringement of our privacy or civil liberties. Police state or not? Personal responsibilty or not? There are arguments for both, it's not an easy issue. Thanks for saying it better than I could. Jaxx's buddy, if you don't like the way things are run, what are you doing about it??? (Besides complaining on an internet forum) they can change their code of ethics and get rid of members who breech them i am allowed to have an opinion and i will voice it. asking me how i contribute is a red herring (and none of your business)
  6. The only thing that will work with cat urine is a product that works on the enzymes. None of these will remove the cat urine odour I am willing to bet. They are more aimed at 'general' pet odours and maybe dog urine. Cat urnine is a whole other subject. Odourgo is supposed to remove the smell, the source of the smell, not just cover it up. See here and tell me I'm not reading this wrong: http://www.odourgo.com.au/applications_petodour.html you are right it is supposed to remove the odour not cover it up. shame it doesn't work. maybe let them know and see what they say? eta here is how it works: (from their web site) Ozona products bond with the odour molecule and destroy the odour-causing compound.
  7. Just like being a licensed driver doesn't necessarily make a responsible one. The ANKC are not a regulatory body and have limited ability to limit the actions of members. With all the enforcement manpower, time and money thrown at road safety there are still a multitude of idiots out there. What chance is there against the tide of idiocy that humanity creates sometimes? People need to take responsibilty for themselves and unfortunately some don't. It is just a shame when innocents like animals are caught up in it. in all honesty this sh*ts me. if that is the case why do we say to new puppy buyers to go to a registered breeder...i might as well tell them to go look in the newspaper if the ankc don't manage their members then what use are they...i think this is a cop out
  8. i hope you mean the people doing it and not the people answering this thread. no one here thinks it is ok to do
  9. it is not unethical behaviour according to the ankc if the dogs are not registered with the ankc so i am not sure what the ankc would do about this
  10. as long as the dogs are not ankc registered dogs the ankc don't care a registered breeder can bred 100 litters of cross breeds a year if they want and the ankc won't do a thing if its not their registered dogs
  11. that doesnt bother me as the rescue didnt breed her and the pups will be desexed before rehome, but i understand what your saying but to intentionally do it when u r a registered breeder? thought we only had to edcuate the general public about BYB and puppy farming, but obvioulsy not I would just think it gives good ethical breeders a bad name and that isnt right i get quite upset that the ankc has no problems with this and also seems to do little to clean up it's backyard from less than desirable breeders.
  12. oh i feel the same when i see bitches in rescue allowed to whelp ;)
  13. the ankc allow this as long as they are not cross breeding ankc registered dogs
  14. i would be really concerned about letting a dog off leash that had been with me for such a short time a long line would be a better idea if you want to test his recall. i also agree this dog is not a puppy and i am surprised he was re-homed whilst he had those issues
  15. i think something like this was going to happen in fed square in melbourne but the event was cancelled due to weather. i haven't heard if it was rescheduled.
  16. I agree with this. TA, I think you gave courteous replies to these honest people. In a few words you managed to be educational without sounding as if you were blaming them for not knowing. I can understand your feeling angry that a registered breeder might launch their puppies into a new life via a pet shop. Where god alone knows who'd buy them & do what with them. But you didn't take this anger out on the enquirers. I wish there were ways that the registered breeders & pet owners who have their dogs, could interface with the general public. Not at dog shows, where people are too busy. But I'd like to see Purebred Pride days where people could come mingle & learn a lot about the purebred dog world. Also Breed Club Days, open to the public. me too. i think this is a great idea. i would like it to be advertised well so the general public knew it was on and knew when to attend.
  17. that's a shame about the no blocking. i check new posts and am becoming a bit disturbed at graphic descriptions in the titles of posts in the news section so i would have wanted this to be blocked. eta maybe people could resist putting the graphic descriptions in the titles and descriptions if the forum can't be blocked?
  18. they look terrific. my dog started to look like a walking coffee table, just as she was turning from a puppy to an adult and i didn't adjust her food amounts (and i was used to bigger dogs ). so a reduction in food and she has a lovely waist.....and i can feel her ribs
  19. I think it is different state to state. In DogsNSW code of ethivs states I know that some other states don't have the exemption for working dogs. ETA I don't imagine the intent of the exemption for working dogs meant working breeds kept as suburban pets. yes this is what i said, a registered dog cannot be cross bred but a registered breeder can cross breed as many dogs as they like as long as they are unregistered dogs. they only way to stop this would be to say no registered breeder can cross breed any dog
  20. my understanding is that the ankc allows it's registered breeders to cross breed dogs as long as the dogs they are using aren't ankc registered dogs. again, i am happy to be corrected if i am wrong about this
  21. wow - code of ethics in SA says that a registered breeder can not sell to pet shops at all. How come it is different in NSW? i will check out the ankc and sa dogs but i was sure it had something to do with the ankc not being able to restrict trade so the ruke was that registered breeders could only sell to PIAA pet shops eta do you have a link to the SA code of ethics please? yep - on the dogssa website - download the rule book - page 41 - code of ethics for all SACA members http://www.dogssa.com.au/Website/index.php?id=10&level=2 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest or any kind. thank you for that. i will look at the ankc rules eta here are the ankc regulations from here http://www.ankc.org.au/Regulations-1.aspx 26. A member shall not: .1 Sell or dispose of a dog to a commercial pet wholesaler or retail pet shop unless they are accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA). .2 Allow a dog owned by that member to be given as a prize or donation or to be auctioned. i do not believe dogssa can restrict a breeders trade and if they can then the ankc should be following their lead They can't. If someone were to fight the rule, it would have to be changed. So far, no-one's fought it. so it stays. thank you for that. maybe dogssa haven't put in the full regulation as determined by the ankc. interesting though that state kennel clubs can have different rules and regs to the national body
  22. add me to the totally agree with this crowd...
  23. Thanks for that feistylady, I had suspected it for about a year and the vets kept diagnosing ear infections and allergies.. Finally there was nothing wrong and they got the idea it might be SM. Hopefully she will live a long time without severe signs.. already the meds are helping with her ear scratching and we also got a harness to ease the pressure on her neck during walks.. i am so sorry to hear about your dog victoria. i really do wish more cav breeders would be proactive about this problem so the pet owners didn't need to watch their pets suffer or be landed with huge vet bills
