  1. Hello all, I'm hoping that i'm putting this in the right spot. I have decided to be abit norty with my K Rudd monies and instead of saving it i have splurged on a big canvas photograph of star trails taken right here in SA. :D Only problem is i'm not sure how i should present it, mount it, frame it, put it up on the wall? Basically at this stage it is just a piece of canvas. How do most people display them? I've seen them attached to a wooden frame before but i'm not keen on that idea. I thought some of the photographers that frequent here might know and share their expertise, please.
  2. I think to have any ill effects from mercury in fish that you have to actually eat a huge amount of the species that can have levels of mercury in them. Something like breakfast, lunch and tea every day for yonks. I'm not convinced that sardines even have any levels of mercury in them either.
  3. Have you had hip xrays done? My boy had what appeared to be a leg problem that turned out to be hip dysplasia.
  4. Hehe i knew it was you fluffypaws, but didn't know if you recognised me and sometimes i get shy I'm sausage lady, Luka thought i was the bomb. :p Gonna have to grab more cuddles from him on Sunday. :p I noticed you posted a thread aswell, are you abit hesitant about continuing training because of the lady we had on Wednesday? I agree with you that the other instructors appeared ok. The guy we had on Sunday was pretty good i thought? I fail to see how some of her techniques were appropriate. And i don't get why she thought that teaching the alpha roll to people would be acceptable in an obedience class? I'm sure there were some owners there that wouldn't know a whole lot about alpha rolling or dominant dogs and will take what she said as gospel. To me that's scary. What really crapped me off was when B was growling at me and she was going "do it, roll him" afterwards she said to the whole class, "well that was good atleast you all get to see what a dominant dog is like" I'm going to talk to the head instructor on Sunday and make my decision from there. If they think that it's approriate to teach that kind of stuff or if they make excuses i think i will be looking else where.
  5. I haven't spoken to anyone else yet. I'm going to go and speak to someone face to face on Sunday. I'm not sure the "boss lady" is there any other day. And your spot on, they are volunteer instructors hence why i don't want to condemn the whole place too quickly. Sighthounder-I checked out the website you posted and they look good. Thanks for the suggestion, although i'm not 100% sure where Trinity Gardens is.
  6. Yep there's atleast one other one that i know of off the top of my head. We went there to start with (and completed what they called basic obedience) so i might look into them again. Also might talk to the OH and see what he says. He was there last night watching and was shocked at the alpha roll part, and that i wasn't crying my eye's out when we left. Maybe it might be necessary to seek out a different club. Quickasyoucan, we've had a private trainer come to our home once before. He said to us that we needed to be firmer and gave us some ideas on how to do that, which we have since implemented. But didn't seem to think that we had that major of a problem. I've just bookmarked K9's website so am going to have a good read of that when i get a chance. Thanks so much everyone. This has really gone off topic hasn't it
  7. I do a variation with him ie: he has to sit, stay and look at me for an extended period of time before he gets ok and can eat. I might download it and read again and try to implement it better. Can't hurt. Thank you. B has been a challenge and i think will be a challenge until his dying day. Boxers hey! ETA I don't know much about drive training. Is there somewhere i can go to read about it?
  8. I'm in Adelaide. The thing is this club actually came really highly recommended, so i feel like maybe it's just me and that particular instructor was maybe just having a bad night?
  9. Your spot on Poodlefan and because i wasn't comfortable doing it but did it anyway i really feel like a knob today and that i may have ruined B in some way. Drama queen i know. At the end of the lesson the trainer said to me "you have a very dominant dog there"! Which i knew already. Doesn't make him bad but then last night i saw other behaviours that weren't good. He jumped on, growling and snarling at the instructors dog for one and that was just before the alpha rolling incident and i wonder if that was why they forced the issue? I'm sure they meant well. He was also very scared when we first rocked up which is not like him, he is usually over confident. I guess the general consensus is leave the alpha roll to Ceaser. My thought's exactly. I just don't want to give up though and leaving the club i'd feel like a failure, or that they would think i'm walking away because my dog is bad.
  10. Exactly. I have to say i was completely shocked and i couldn't quite understand where they were coming from to teach other people to do it. My dog is extremely dominant and barely listens to me hence why we have re-started obedience, i certainly didn't think that type of thing was an appropriate obedience command. I could see it ending badly with B because of his dominance and i know he doesn't see me as pack leader. He was completely excited from all the barking and other dogs etc aswell. Anyway i did it against my better judgement because i was the only one hesitating and the trainer kept egging me to do it. End result was my dog growling at me and trying to nip me. Now i'm at a loss with what to do. I probably shouldn't give up on the obedience club but yeah.....
  11. Ooops maybe i didn't explain that very well. If it was taught so that each person could do it to their own dog? The trainer didn't do it personally to unknown dogs. Does that change anyone's thought's on it at all?
  12. Do you think that in a normal run of the mill obedience class it's appropriate for the instructor to teach the "ceaser"/alpha roll? I'm extremely interested to hear what everyone else's opinions are.
  13. And hows about we follow the quiche with abit of Pav for dessert
  14. Would you be able to give us a link/website to be able to view the article please? I had a quick google but couldn't find it
  15. Okay so general consensus is that it is a sign of submission. Makes complete sense to me (although i had heard the opposite ie it's dominance) as B is definitely the boss. Persephone in regards to this Why you would stop it,I don't know .... I stop it because it would go on forever if i didn't. ;) Should i not be stopping it and just letting them carry on? What would the reason be to let them do this? Genuine questions. I'm quite intrigued by this behaviour.
  16. Yeah i thought that maybe they just like the taste of each other But having said that i think there might be something else to it, only because they have done it before when they were getting a pat ;) And never after food mostly when B's relaxing & El should be to. It's just weird.
  17. Hi guys. I have a quick question that i thought some of you knowledgeable DOLers might know the answer to. Just recently (like the last couple of weeks) Bomber and Ellie have started licking each other in the mouths. Drives me batty so i always put a stop to it straight away but i was wondering if it means anything at all? ;) Generally Ellie is the instigator, just walks straight up to B while he is on his matt and starts licking him in the mouth. Any suggestion's as to why they're doing it would be greatly appreciated.
  18. The only thing that would really worry me is you have no idea when the meat was cut up/taken off the animal (that sounds weird, i hope you know what i mean ) or how long it was in the window for. It might have first been put into the window on the day you purchased it but it also might have been in there days before you brought it. If it was frozen or was in a cooler bag and was left in the car i wouldn't have problem giving it to B.
  19. Great idea Laffi I will second the recommendation from Piper for Rural Pet Meats at O'halloran Hill here in SA. We went there for the first time on Saturday (after Pipers recommendation in a thread i started not too long ago) and they had an awesome selection, weren't fussed about bagging it up in 1kg lots for me and it was priced really well. One that hasn't been mentioned is bucket-o-beef. It's a home delivery service. They only stock roo, chicken and beef mince but are again, well priced.
  20. This vet told her something along the lines of "it would've happened anyway it's just lucky you got to be with her" That is absolutely disgusting to both of those comments. Sounds to me kind of like the vet tried to brush the person off for whatever reason by not suggesting to bring it in when it couldn't even breath properly! To me they are definitely negligent. Poor dog, what a way to go.
  21. Where about's do you live? I have seen Bonnie (not sure if it was working dog though) at the grain and fodder store i get dog food from. It's at Warradale, Olivers Grain & Garden. Their number is 08 83770223 if you wanted to ring and check
  22. Oh no, Wilna you must have been so so worried about your little guy. ;) Eye things are always so scary, i'm glad the vet was able to find what was wrong even though they had to take a second look. I hope the GA goes ok, that they get the grass seed without hassle and he is back chasing his ball asap. Me and Bomber send hugs
  23. It would definitely be a good idea to take him to the vet and get him checked over, as poodlefan said it's possible that the pain is not actually in his leg and hence why it's not hurting when you touch it. I've learnt that one through experience
  24. In regards to the rib's showing it is often the case with young boxers that are still growing that they will look a little on the skinny side. They're such an energetic breed that most of the time they run off anything you can give them I know with Bomber until he was older we could never get him to put/keep on weight, there were always rib's showing. I hated it but was told by many people that that's just the way boxers are & the vet would always comment on how healthy he looked! To me it sounds like his stomach is not liking something you are giving to him. I would fast him for twelve hours, then give him chicken and rice (which he will love) and very slowly work his other dry food back into it bit by bit. I can't comment on Bonnie because have never fed it. With B i found Eagle Pack Holistic and Great Barko were the best for him. Uuumm you don't have fruit trees in your back garden? B was (still is) a bugger for stealing any dropped apricots or apples he could get his hands on. That will definitely give little one's the runs. Probably not but just throwing that one out there How often do you feed him? Good luck with the vet this arvo aswell.
