Latest News On Syringomyelia In Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Such is the frustration that many of us have with Bet constantly twisting what people say on any forum she can find. In fact Bet has already misquoted posts from this list on another forum that none of us are allowed to join. I don't find this post offensive at all. No-one likes to be mis-quoted. I have tried to respond where possible and be informative to the questions that were reasonable and genuine. This is my final post on this topic. If anyone wishes to ask me for any information they can "pm" me. -

We could go round and round in circles about what should be done (in fact we already have on this topic) .... Even the experts don't demand limiting breeding only A's to A's. Yes, the public needs to be aware of ANY problem in a breed. In my opinion most are - by far the majority of enquiries I get are from people who have thoroughly researched the breed. -

in an "ideal world" yes ..... but it's not an "ideal world" .... hence the following statement in the current protocol; "As the incidence of syringomyelia is so high in the breed there will be severe depletion of the gene pool if only clear dogs are used (i.e. other problems will develop). Therefore until the genetic defect is determined it is recommended that dogs with syringomyelia be used if they are valuable in another genetic sense e.g. good heart. " -

it's important to note the following from the October UK seminar; "This research is based on the Breeding Guidelines issued in 2006, using 465 dogs (CKCS and Griffon Bruxellois)" and .... "Full details cannot be reproduced here (as these are interim results that are undergoing Peer Review prior to publication) but a summary of the results". -

hi LizT Unfortunately it is NOT a "once off". The experts say that due to "late onset" a scan is recommended at 2.5 yrs and then again after the age of 5. 12months is the minimum age for grading. Some breeders overseas are scanning at 12months, 2.5 years and then again at 5 years. -

There are already some breeders who will not use unscanned dogs, and there are others doing their best to be within the current protocol. There are quite a few "A" graded Stud Dogs around the country. No breeder I have spoken to here that I know has MRI'd dogs has "hidden" the results from others. -

an MRI will confirm whether a syrinx is present or not ... the presence of a syrinx does NOT necessarily mean the dog will ever be "symptomatic". That is why current protocol allows the breeding of dogs with SM that are not symptomatic (to 'A' graded dogs). -

for those of you who may not have read it .. here are some points from the current recommended protocol published in the UK; "The aim of these recommendations is to reduce the incidence of symptomatic syringomyelia in the breed not to create litters of puppies guaranteed not to have SM as the chance of producing an affected dog cannot be predicted without knowing the inheritance." "Therefore until the genetic defect is determined it is recommended that dogs with syringomyelia be used if they are valuable in another genetic sense e.g. good heart." "any unscreened dog should be assumed to be "D" (and a "D" can be bred to an "A") -

Even the 'experts" don't propose such a dramatic stance. As a breeder what is your plan to eradicate this lamentable wretched disease from your breed? if you have read this entire thread you will know what I said very early on ... "There is no denying there is a problem in the breed - we can only do as we have always done and that is to use the tools available to us if possible." -

Actually you are being "unthinking" and you don't know what you're talking about. This is Australia NOT the UK. What knowledge do you have of Australian breeders? What knowledge do you have of MRI facilities in Australia?
