  1. Showing a desexed dog doesn't interfere with the ability of others to show their dog to the best of their ability. sorry - but showing a desexed dog is against the rules (except in neuter), showing an in-season bitch isn't. (as has been mentioned numerous times in this thread.) throwing bait under a dog's nose to put it off is just as bad, as is running up its backside and stomping on the ground behind it. I see this happening every show I go to and this definitely "interferes with the ability of others to show their dog to the best of their ability". A bitch in season is often the least of an exhibitor's problems.
  2. i have to say - some people's responses are a little more than interesting too.
  3. Was just sent this article. wondering if anyone else has read it. The following comments from people are interesting too and show the damage her work has done. http://www.ourdogs.co.uk/News/2011/Feb2011/pedigree.htm (sorry - cant work out how to do the linky thing correctly)
  4. It wont necessarily be easy - difficult like it is in many places BUT if you can get dog references from previous landlords that will help a lot. (Have friends who rent with dogs and lots of children (6) and they had lots of problems getting rentals but the references really really really helped)
  5. as someone has said - all the councils have a two dog limit per suburban household - being able to apply for a third - not all will give it to you... Onkaparinga (south) has an ok reputation for giving permission for a third dog - but they are not giving out any more kennel licenses in the area apparently. Mitcham council (foothills and hills - south east city) is quite dog friendly and allow more dogs on application (they seem quite good on enquiry). Otherwise - you need to be in more rural council areas (like Gawler, Lower light etc (north))
  6. i have a dog that has some very specific grass allergies. Allergic to kikuyu, but not santa ana couch. She is fine on the grass at home, but gets itchy when spending time at parks etc with kikuyu. Local vet told me many dogs have sensitivity to this grass - and it is the most common in the country. Could this be an issue with your dog?
  7. Someone showing a bitch in season and stopping a young male from concentrating, in my view, is nothing compared to exhibitors I have seen deliberately dropping bait in front of the dog behind them in the line up, dropping bait on their way around the ring, letting their males piss all over everything and to top it all off, taking their dog into the ring to relieve themselves before judging so that others will be put off by the sent. Showing a bitch in season, is the least of these issues. Having said that - I will show my girl when she is coming in, and going out, but not when she is ready to stand. Nor if her discharge is heavy.
  8. i think i worked with Cas. (Trying to remember names) I had a sheltie (Rommy) and we had a go with sheep. Belle, the polish lowland sheepdog went in straight after us - and you couldn't miss her. I might PM you - I have questions about how to enter. The schedule is out for the instinct test/trial in April and I am trying to find an entry form for that somewhere online. It doesn't seem to be the conformation form or even the trial form. Rommy is about to drop all her coat and so I won't be showing her for a couple of months - thought herding might be a bit of fun in between.
  9. Wow - That is a lot of shows for 6 weeks. You could always move to Adelaide - only 3 shows in January in total and NONE in February. Regarding continuing to accept cheques alongside the modern payment types - the point is that there are banks out there saying that in the future there will not be any such things as cheques - they are being phased out completely as they are currently in Europe. (in all banks). I agree that it will disadvantage some groups of people. Am wondering what those people will do when there are no more cheques? (Like what did they do when there were no more passbooks?)
  10. My girl participated in a 'come and try' herding day at SACA last year with sheep and absolutely loved it and did very very well, especially as it was her first exposure to sheep. If we could have stayed for the afternoon instinct test, I am told she would have got her basic herding instinct certificate easily. I notice that there are tests coming up again in april. Is there anywhere in Adelaide where one can go an learn herding? My girl might instinctively know what to do, but I have no idea at all. Would love to see how far she could go too, especially as she seems to really enjoy it.
  11. trailer tampering at SACA in south oz - and it wasn't young kids
  12. agree... I'm still so bad that they don't even bother bitching about me ..................... yet :D see - both of these quotes apply to me. :D ;) Been showing for a couple of years now and my girl has had some small success. In another state, I've been told she'd be titled by now, but very competitive in our breed here. (Bitches currently being shown have won specialties interstate often). I am lucky in that most people in my state, in my breed are friendly and polite. Highly competitive, but we all talk to each other and help each other out. There are a couple that aren't or a couple that have long running feuds with each other and are down right nasty and manipulative. I suspect that a couple run me and my dog down behind my back, but frankly, don't care, don't want to know - not worth my time. I have heard about, and read on this forum, case of where another exhibitor put radiator freeze in a winning dogs drinking water - dog died. Also, in SA in recent times, someone was going around tampering with people's dog trailers. Unhitching, loosening things etc.
  13. Are there any shows in Australia that give paypal as an option? This would be a great option for payment (imo anyway). I love that option when I am buying online. Means that if there is a dispute, I can get my money back. Just on the whole leaving a bank who phases out cheques - get ready... it is coming... maybe not in near future, but it is being planned here across the entire banking sector (all institutions)...
  14. Go to bunnings and buy the metal/wire compost bins. they are exactly the same as the pen above in terms of height and the gaps in the panels and about one third of the price. I have these up at my place for internal fencing to keep my girls (shetland sheepdogs) out of areas I don't want them in - like my carport. I secure them around other posts with fencing wire, or I use tent pegs to secure them to the ground. There are 4 panels in each compost bin and come with the means to join the pieces together. It works really really well and is cheap. I also used them to make my pen for when I take them to shows.
  15. yep - when i was protesting to my credit union - this is the reasoning that was given to me. It is happening in Europe already and that is will be phased in here soon. There was no timeline given. I would prefer electronic transfer, or, better still, paypal, but SA seems to be lagging behind badly in this area.
  16. I am with a credit union. Community CPS. According to the CU - everybody, including all credit unions are apparently phasing out cheques. It is not common knowledge yet. The word is that there are not enough cheque users these days as 'everyone' uses credit card, direct transfer, paypal etc and not cheques. I said 'what is not enough' - apparently there are only 100 000 cheque users in the country - I would have thought that this was enough... but apparently not. Love my credit union - will stay unless I find that another credit union decides to keep cheques. I like the direct transfer and post the receipt idea... works for me. Hoping that SA shows take this option up really soon. I am sure a lot of show secretaries would appreciate that instead of having to bank a whole lot of cheques. I won't send cash, even double enveloped. I do know of a showie who had the cash for her entry for a weekend of shows (over $100) stolen. Not worth the risk.
  17. silver is incredibly hard to see on a road on an overcast day. RAA says higher incident of accidents with cars this colour on an overcast day.
  18. Power still off in the tablelands. no news from bro this morning.
  19. I hope you're right. I really do. But I don't share your confidence .This thing makes Tracy look like a summer breeze. The storm surge alone is going to be massive. Here's what a Cat 5 Cyclone (Andrew) did to Homestead Florida in 1992. I don't think the capability of these kinds of weather systems should be played down. Florida didn't have a building code either in 1992 when it hit (not for cat5). New Orleans did in 2003 - but not for a cat 5. They didn't learn the lessons of earlier disasters. BUT - you are right cat 5 cyclone is really really really serious - and I am worried for my family there. (I will just add that - that Australia's tropical areas are some of the best prepared areas for severe storms in the world). Having said that - it will be bad, but I don't think as bad as some of those previous disasters in terms of absolute destruction. Interesting to note that Hurrican Andrew, caused the greatest amount of damage in central american countries, where buildings weren't strong and where rainfall caused devastating floods and mudslides. That devastation wasn't reported on much to the rest of the world. I would be worried about any houses in the primary storm surge zones - they aren't likely to survive the wind and wave attack.
  20. WHere are you Pebs? My bro is in Mareebra Yep, put the stuff you care about in the car and drive inland and south. about 800km should do it. Keep safe people. Staying put sounds like a plan to be avoided IMO. This thing's going to be a strong as Cyclone Tracy and if it hits a residential area, there won't BE homes to take shelter in. They will be ripped apart. Google a photo of Darwin post Tracy for an indication of what to expect. Here's one. And another You won't see the same level of devastation. I lived in Darwin not long after it was rebuilt from Tracy. There were a number of reasons why the damage was so bad. The main one being was that there were brand new suburbs going up, with buildings not to code (there wasn't really one) and lots of building materials lying around. The cyclone came in through those suburbs first, picked up all the debris and smashed it into the houses of the neighbouring suburbs. This is what caused all of the damage in Darwin. This won't happen again - even in a category 5 cyclone. You will see the odd building not survive, you won't see whole suburbs flatten. To say there wont be homes to shelter in is really a panic statement and not useful or accurate. What will be lost though, is the infrastructure and you can expect loss of power, water and other essential services to FNQ. Power lines and towers will come down, so will phone lines and mobile phone towers. Just lost contact with my bro in the tablelands - we were on skype. The tv stations up there have also stopped broadcasting - or at least the tv signal has stopped transmitting.
  21. my dog was 6 months old when my neighbour with a SWF moved in next door. we wanted to make sure that neither dog (both protective barkers - will bark at strangers and people next to the fence) didn't bark at each other or us. We had visits to each others house for little play times. They got to play in each others backyard and got used to us. Has worked really well. Neither dog barks at each other, or anyone in our respective backyards. They can rev each other up when a stranger walks past, but will quiet down when we tell them too. This may work. Can you suggest their dog has a visit to your backyard? With them there and you?
  22. My bank happily informed me the other day, whilst I was ordering a new cheque book, that all banks are phasing out cheques altogether and they will no longer be available. (No date for this, but the time is coming sooner, rather than later). I am in SA and we do not have online entry available nor payment of show fees electronically at present. Am wondering how one will enter a show without using cheques. Bank cheques are very expensive, money orders are as well and it isn't safe to send cash. Do people use other methods? What are the states that have electronic entries (and payments)? What methods are used by people?
  23. thundershirt arrived today - and I tried it out tonight. Hard to tell because it is very very hot here at the moment. I decided to put it on her for the first time while she was pretty laid back and relaxed. No problems. Got a small test when the dog started barking. She would normally race outside and join in. She didn't. She pricked her ears and got up to investigate, but came back when I called. So looking good here. Question for you all though. She went outside with me, but then wouldn't come back in through the dog door. I re-adjusted the straps around her chest, thinking they might be restricting her movement - and she came inside through the door ok - but was a bit hesitant (when normally she would charge through). I've noticed though, that she will not come down the stairs with the shirt on. She goes up ok but will not come down at all. Anyone else notice anything like this?
  24. I made my show trolley mat - wasn't that hard. I used polar fleece with quilting wadding in the middle. Took about 40 minutes all up to make. I can throw it in the wash really easily. Cost - not a lot because I had left over material - but for about $15 you would get enough wadding and polarfleece to make two mats I reckon. If you want some instructions, let me know
