  1. This is a bit sad

I am new to showing this year and am in Group 5 at SACA. First come first served over where we are, and I have found so many people very welcoming and helpful, to the point of many exhibitors giving me the biggest cheer when we got Minor in Group for the first time. Pretty supportive bunch in our part of SACA who don't frown on you for where you put your gazebo and they will welcome you into theirs too

Yep - this has been my experience too over in ring 5....was especially grateful for the guys that took me in to their gazebo one really wet and windy day - too windy for me to get my gazebo up - I was getting organised to get ready in the back of my car. Everyone is very friendly around there.... why I am surprised to hear about stuff happening around other rings.

  2. Hell no! I reckon the CSM should organise a road trip.

Well some of the CSM aren't exactly morning people, so anyone trying to get us to move before the first coffee/chi of the day could get more then they bargain for!

Seriously, how pathetic is someone who is so self-important that they think they 'own' a spot.

Please, please, please come...(although I suspect that group 7 isn't a problem either.... suspect it may be not just hounds but the ring that "had" to be closed because of bindis, when actually every ring currently has bindis in it.)

I would love to be a fly on the wall for that!

I've seen first hand the SACA spot owners ! wasn't there even a rumour about saca allowing some spots to be allocated & paid for annually ?

Country & Ag shows in NSW are great, first come, first served. And yes, because the rings change at country shows, there's less likelihood of 'ownership'.

It's the established canine grounds with permanent rings where proprietal behaviour is more likely.

    fifi

Not just a rumour.... to quote from the december journal.... "the letting of gazebo sites at SACA park. Yes, Council has been investigating the issue....if you do not rent a site you will still be able (to) set up your gazebo on SACA Park as per normal but not on a reserved site unless you have permission of the person who has rented it." (grammar errors were in the journal)....

Who knows when they are going to bring this in - no date on it. And apparently it will raise $10,000 pa. Personally think it is a stupid idea.

In the September journal, it was made clear, that at SACA, the only way to reserve your spot before a show was to put up your actual gazebo. Tarps, pegs, ropes were no longer allowed. Would be why some people getting "precious" about "their" spot - they currently can't reserve spots unless they put up their gazebo. They are probably the same people who are pushing for rented spots.

  3. Are you in SA? As a visitor I was quite surprised and bemused to discover that by local tradition, certain patches of grass despite no signs nor visible boundaries are actually the property of someone and visitors are not welcome. Luckily we were advised of this before unpacking the gazebo and guided to some "freehold grass" up the back by some kindly locals - or I have the distinct feeling the posse would have been out at dawn for we interstate (and unknowing) " trespassers". :)

It is possibly because the same groups are in the same rings every week at SACA and local showies have staked a claim on certain patches of ringside grass, but unfortunately that practice does not encourage or make welcome visitors and new exhibitors who may quite unknowingly and much to their regret, transgress the local "rules" :o

Does this occur anywhere else? We only saw in it Adelaide despite attending several shows in SA/ NSW/Qld during a recent road trip. In WA it is first-come first served but maybe that is because with each show the ring layout or group allocation is usually different so nobody has a "regular" spot.

Oh rubbish - there are no 'reserved' patches in SA - not around ring 5 anyway. If people told you there were, then they shouldn't have - How rude of them!! I set up around ring 5 every week - if you want ringside you have to get there early (or the day before). I did read in my recent journal, that they are considering raising funds by 'renting' ringside space to people each week which would then be reserved :) BUT this hasn't come into being yet... Personally, I'd like to see the rings at SACA rotated every year - why should the toy people get all the shade and get to be close to the facilities and group 5 get stuck with no shade and the longest walk from the facilities...

enigma - what are your first couple of shows? After this weekend, we don't actually have any all breeds shows at SACA for quite awhile - none in January or February - so you'd either be out at Karabeetha Reserve, (mostly enough room if we have rings on both ovals like we normally do at New Years Eve - was a bit squishy the other week when we had to be contained on the soccer pitch cos there was cricket still happening), or at Heathfield Oval - and I suspect that will be quite squishy, for parking at least - there isn't much up there...

This isnt rubbish!! I got told something very similar by a friend that was doing some travelling and doing shows along the way! She was actually warned to move because the person who's spot it was got rather nasty if her spot was taken. So friend move, she said 30 mins before the show started this other person waltzed in and claimed her spot. The woman then had ago at my friend for setting up in her spot! This is after my friend had moved elsewhere. Friend came away with a very dim view of SA showies.

I didn't mean that your experience was rubbish - I meant how rude and absolutely out of line the show person was for telling you the spot was reserved! (when it clearly wasn't). Wouldn't have happened around the group 5 ring - there it is strictly first come first served. Which is why a few of the die hards come and set up at 6am the day before. I don't bother - I arrive on the day of the show and set up where I can, never far from the ring. It's a pity your friend didn't stand her ground. What was the woman going to do? Make a report? How childish of her! I am sorry you guys had such a bad experience in SA - it is pretty friendly around our ring each week.

  5. No other dogs other than those entered should be on the grounds anyway, so rule broken there...

This is a rule? In which state? Here, there are always dogs around that aren't entered. Especially baby puppies getting socialised before their first show...

  6. Thundershirts here for $35: http://www.arcatapet.com/

Postage is $11, not bad :) I love this site, my favorite overseas supplier of dog stuff :D

Bugger, just jumped to $17 del. Tried to order one before work but ran out of time.

Thanks for the link to the website.

I will order one after xmas.

Delivery is now $12 at this website

For those who were coloured ones you can buy a blue or a pink direct from the website www.thundershirt.com you can also get $10 off by using the coupon code TSHOLIDAY10 (only available with the pink or blue on the downside shipping is $20 from here

The shipping cost stays the same, but depending on what size you order, it's different because of the weight of the parcel that needs to be sent ;)

also - sizes small or less don't qualify for the discount... (not a big enough order apparently)

I did a mock order with an XS to check postage and it worked, did it let you apply the discount code?

yep and it came up with- your order is too small to qualify for this discount...

  7. if it wasn't for the coat - I would say a shetland sheepdog - is the size you want and will fulfill all the requirements your kids have listed along with being highly intelligent and eager to please - but on a property with lots of grass - you'll spend time getting the bindis out of the fur on their legs. They only need a weekly brush, and they keep themselves clean - but they are going to pick up the prickles on your property.

Maybe others know of breeds that have the same temperament and personality of shelties?

  9. Hello All

My name is Michael Andrews, and I was also affected by the problems at JustUsDogs. I had previously simply joined the newsletter...but found myself receiving emails from people wishing to purchase vet grade steroids! The then owner, Nici Bruckner advised me her website had been hacked and all sorts of fake listings, drugs for sale, and extreme adult imagery had been posted to the site.

I am a web professional, and have helped Nici with the winding back of the site to its pre hacking state, and locked down the site to prevent it happening again.

More recently, Nici has asked if I would consider purchasing the site as she did not have the time or resources needed to bring it up to scratch.(I am sure everyone here has seen the problems. Poor breed descriptions, poor listing layouts, poor services section). We have as of today, finalised terms for a sale of the site and assuming our lawyers can work out all the fine details, I will officially take over the site on the 14th of December.

The site is the top ranking site in Australia for "Dogs" and to me its such a shame its content does not measure up to its rankings.

My first task will be to update the breed descriptions, which are by any definition, poor.

Next, i will be revamping the services offered to members, which are very dated.

Then, I will be locking down the offering of puppies to sale properly, so only registered breeders can do so.

With lots more to come in the new year.

I appreciate many people were affected by the problems with the site, and I don't expect trust to be regained quickly, but please know I am on the case, I will be working hard over the next 3 months to make the site the site it should be.

Anyone who wishes to contact me with suggestions of comments, positive or negative, please do feel free to do so, I am here to listen.

Michael - the biggest concerns were that the site obviously became a phising website were people were sent to fake links for pages such as facebook where passwords were able to be retrieved when users were prompted to re log-in. Would hope that this is the first thing that is fixed.

  10. The early starts. Why oh why do dog shows have to start at 8.30 or 9am? Isn't 1pm a more reasonable time?

8.30 is sort of reasonable, 9am is a bit better, 10am is perfect. However, now we are into summer we start at 8am  which is NOT reasonable at all. These are usually Sunday shows and follow the Saturday show which started at 5pm (which is more than reasonable) but not good if u want to do both shows on the weekend.....

Football starts in the PM, so does cricket, basketball generally starts after dark....now if dog shows want to be considered "sport" they need to start at a more sporting time.....after lunch! Must better for those of us who live 2 hours away. 4am wake ups absolutely suck.

Doesn't help when you have a breed that starts with "A" like in your sig....

luckier here - mine starts with "S" - so not quite as bad, and live closer to where most of our shows are.

  11. I have a Honda City and it has a fairly good boot space, but again, I wouldn't want to order something, have it bought all the way up here and have it not fit!

My show trolley - aluminum and very old (been re-revited and still going strong) fits in the back of my HOnda Jazz (standing up). I know it fits in the Honda City because when I was buying my car, I took my show trolley with me to put it in the back of the cars I was looking at. (Wont fit in the back of the Ford Fiesta, Suzuki Swift). Will lie flat in the City - my trolley is average, single berth size - it isn't a large one. Fitting in both the JAzz and the City made my decision on which car to buy difficult - I spent ages tossing up between the two. I love the looks of the City - decided in the end to go with the luggage versatility of the Jazz.

  12. - when my dog races to the ring, goes around the ring like a particularly sleepy sloth, then struts out of the ring like a BIS winner :) . Happens to me every week  Evil puppies :(

This is exactly what I get with Portia 90% of the time..... slugs around the ring with her tail down, and as soon as we are out of the ring, up goes the tail. :(

same here - thinks the ring is the best place to run around with the nose on the ground like a shovel - all that nice food all around that must be there for them to eat....

having a lovely, still, non-windy morning, until it is time for your double coated breed to go in.

  13. I think its a great networking tool.

The point about spamming with results and pictures to try and grab the attention of upcoming judges on your friends list is a foreign concept to me. But anyway, isn't this what happens in magazines that most of the judges get for free anyway?

opened my eyes, and explains some of the comments I see on facebook quite often....

me - I use facebook to keep in touch mostly with family - it's where I found out one niece was engaged and the other was pregnant. (Wouldn't have known otherwise - well, not until much later anyway...)

  14. Hi all,

I've just been speaking with Wolfgang Schnitzer, CEO of Dogs SA regarding

the state of the Group 1 ring at DogsSA Park. He, along with the

groundsman, inspected Ring 1 this morning and located the offending burrs

and bindis that wreaked havoc with our dogs at last weekend's shows.

As a consequence, Wolfgang has asked that I post notification of Ring 1 now

being closed for maintenance, until further notice.. Commencing from the

All Breeds Dog Club Championship Shows on 20th & 21st November 2010, Group 1

(Toy) exhibitors are to use Ring 8.

This information has also been posted on the DogsSA website. Please cross

post freely and notify anyone who will be affected by this change of rings.

Wolfgang said he has also established a DogsSA Facebook page but I haven't

    checked that out as yet.

Group 5 ring is full of bindis too - really bad. Suspect it is the same in many of them.

Rings need a really good weed and feed and should have been done in the last 6 weeks when there were no shows there!!

  15. If you are looking to buy a grey import you could definately try ebay. Another dealer I have bought from is DWI International who also offer a warranty and you are able to send the camera to an Australian repairer if you have a fault with the equipment.

I also just bought a lens from DWI (Digital World International). They have agents in Australia, but it all ships from Hong Kong. I was very happy though with their service. The canon warranty got me hooked. My instruction book, though, came with Japanese as the first listed language - English was about number 4 in the booklet. Would buy from them again.

If I were buying a camera though, I think I would still do what I did - and buy from a camera store (shop around for best price and haggle for extras like memory card and battery) just so that I got the after sales service you get from them. (Being very much a beginner when it comes to all this).

  16. Here are the shows, from the 2011 calendar on DogSA website.

edited to add - sorry about the crap formatting, not translatting over that well

In answer to your question about how far to the NT border - it's a two day drive. (or thereabouts)

  17. Also - if you have contents insurance - you can probably make an accidental damage claim. Given how much lenses cost - would be worth the excess.

My insurance excess with contents and building insurance - I think is around $200 - so maybe not worth it but when I was renting and it was just contents insurance - the excess was lower $100 - so worth it then.

  18. Last Saturday it rained some, so my friend lillypilly pulled out her camera and started snapping away trying to catch the dropets hitting the puddles near us... here are my attempts...

    6-11-2010-rain-cows753.jpg

Trust me - catching these was a LOT harder than you'd think... took over 1000 shots for a handful of ones that were timed right... next time I'll even try to centre them better... hehe!

    T.

    I love this one!!!

(love the others too - but this one especially)

  19. Huga.. your little boy is just divine!! he makes for the best photos!! I agree, totally love your editing!

My main computer with ALL of my unbacked up photos went poof yesterday morning.. It's been rushed to the Computer Emergency Department. I hope they can recover photos I've taken. An even sadder note is that I've now lost my photoshop software. The package it came in was lost in the move (I think OH may have thrown out a heap of old software CDs he thought we didn't need and threw my photoshop disc out with it)

Will probably have to start from scratch. Ugh.

    On a lighter note..

    Kenkos arrived..

    thought I'd share..

    AMAZING little gadgets!!!

I haven't had much time to play this morning but here are some shots from out in the garden! yay! Only took about 15 shots all up.

ange - what is a Kenkos?

also - what lens are you using there? I can't get that close to the subject with my 50mm

Haven't been in here in ages - but took this photo yesterday whilst practising a little with back lit subjects (and spell check - when it is a verb it is practise with an s not a c!!!)

  20. My hubby builds dog trailers,to big motor homes, off raod vans etc. He built me the best trailer. As I have Newf I needed large berths and good insulation. Outside is fully fibrglass and looks a bit like a caravan style trailer.the internal walls and ceiling are insulated fiberglass, floor is a product called filmed ply. My internal mesh walls can change from 2 or 4 berth with a large wardrobe to fit gazebo and lots of stuff (this can be used as 1 lmedium or 2 smaller additional berths but entry doors are smaller)I also have a large build in frount storage boot that also has a side door that you can slide crates in. Open one wardrobe door a sink and small bench, water pump and undercariage water tank, In the frount boot is a battery set up that runs internal lights and water pump and ready for an aircon to be added. Outer doors have a solid opening panel with a security mesh inner door inside.

I will take some photos soon

I sooo want to see pics of this!!

  21. This website has links to fake facebook pages and other fake sites that requested passwords to log on. Suspect the whole site is a website set up as a fake to get people's personal information and passwords. (Phishing and malware viruses etc) DONT VISIT IT (unless you really trust your anti-virus software). If it sends you to something that looks like facebook - it isn't.
