  1. I have a gortex jacket (short one) brand - "mont" I absolutely love it! Very light weight, not noisy, incredible comfortable.

not the cheapest thing - but worth the money.

This is a link to my jacket - but there are others as well.

    http://www.mont.com.au/index/catalog/product/0172

bought it from outdoor store "annapurna" here in adelaide.

I also own a longer, thigh length coat. Brand name "line7". Not gortex, but 100% waterproof. Really really comfortable. Is a yachting coat. Love this one too - but is lined (thinly) so a bit warmer. This one kept me dry whilst walking in pouring rain at Fox Glacier in New Zealand.

The bad news is - whilst I was looking for a link for you - this company has gone out of business  but you may find some at yachting and sailing stores still. Yachting gear often much cheaper than goretex products.

  2. :)

Just looking for a bit of support! Does anyone else find having a puppy exhausting? I've never had one before, and I can't believe how much work it is (I know, everyone told me it would be, but I didn't realise to what extent!)

It's making me wonder how my husband and I would cope with having a baby!

    it's practice :)

  3. I have always loved Shelties and am so glad I have found this thread so I can learn more about this beautiful breed!

For anyone who has had experience with Shelties and Paps, how do they compare to Papillons in the areas of:

    Grooming

    Trainability

    Exercise requirements

    As an agility dog

Also, is Sentinal and Capstar safe for Shelties? I use Sentinal.

I see that desexing contracts are common in this breed, which I think is great

    Haven't had a pap - just a sheltie.

I give my girl a good brush each week (bout 15minutes to half an hour). She is a show girl so she gets a bath and a really good groom which takes much longer when getting ready for a show.

I have found my dog very intelligent - and quick to learn.

Shelties will love as much exercise as you give them, but are also content doing not a lot (at least mine is).

At my obedience club, there are a number of shelties - three of them are doing agility and do really well at it.

Can't fill you in on the medication though - sorry.

  5. I'm trying to work out the various angles on the irritant and this is one of them. I did have her on an RC and chicken wing diet ONLY for about three weeks, but had to cut the experiment short as she fractured her leg and had to be splinted and contained. One way to keep her quiet was to entertain her with various chewy food treats. During those three weeks there was no change in her diet. Surprisingly in during the two week containment period her skin was a bit better, but that proabably had more to do with the anti inflammatories she was on.

    Edit - poor grammar

could it be a grass allergy? If her skin improved whilst contained, and not outside, with no change in diet - might be environmental. kikuyu is a problem for a number of dogs - and often undiagnosed.

  6. Is lettuce ok?

my little one enjoyed the lettuce I fed her last night...

she likes vegies - will eat all of them - wont eat any fruit though.

puggy_puggy - you have any good website recommendations for BARF? I have an 18mth old sheltie who has some allergies - Kikuyu is the main one. I have tried a few dried foods on the market that say they are good for sensitive skin - but haven't found anything yet. Am only just starting to learn about BARF

  7. Thanks to TashaBailey and Elenbah for showing me pics of their gorgeous girls before and after coat drop in the shelti thread

When showing is the coat a big factor then ? or does the judge take into account the coat dropping ?

Also with the ears , do they need a bit of encouragment to tip over ? or are most natural . My shelti had stand up ears ( obviously a fault ) but i really like the tip over ears , they give more character

ears - depends on the dog. My girl has ears that need encouragement to tip over. When she was a puppy it was a daily battle with her ears. The same when she was in season. At the moment - I do put stuff on her ear tips to make them flop over, but it isn't a daily task anymore, I can leave them for quite awhile.

  8. Thank you for all the reply.

Some dog owners who I regularly meet at our local park think that something must have happened to him during the first 8 months of his life.

Maybe he was attacked by another dog.

Erny, I live in Perth (southern suburb near the city).

Could you recommend someone that can help him.

Today we walked our terrier without the Sheltie.

It was a much more pleasant walk.

She ran around with other dogs and I didin't have to constantly concentrate on the Sheltie.

try a post in the general discussion thread - you will probably get some good recommendations for dog behaviour trainers in perth.

Hope things go well with your boy.

  9. loyal k9 - i am sorry you have had that experience with what is normally a wonderful breed.

there are some good dog behaviourists around that could help you i would think. (maybe post in general discussion thread?) I am sure he would improve with very specific training.

i am careful with my sheltie around small children - not because she is aggressive at all - but because she likes to 'herd' them if they are running around. She gets excited. I make sure there are good rules. If the children are sitting quietly, I have to watch as she likes to lick.

  10. my girl generally loves being where I am - although she will go off and investigate things on her own.

She will jump up and share the couch with me - and whilst, not necessarily on my lap, will want to make sure that some part of her is touching me. Love that aspect.

  11. No idea. All I know is that it was south of Adelaide.

Alex says that Maslins Beach sounds about right... :D

I was thinking either Maslins or silversands beach...possibly Aldinga

Looking at the landscape - I think Ashanalis is from further south - second valley, or normanville (around that area anyway). Still the Fleurieu Peninsula.

This isn't perfect - but a slightly different type of landscape anyway. One stictched, the other not

India v Zimbabwe twenty20 game (the first one in oz) - back before zimbabwe got kicked out of cricket...

  12. Stavros Pippos is a landscape photographer who does amazing work

He uses no filters at all. He researches his landscape and will then go there at the right time of year, right time of day to get the perfect shot. He talks about camping in the flinders for 3 weeks waiting to get the one shot of Mt Painter that he really loved.

here is a link to some of his photographs

    http://www.stavrospippos.com/gallery.asp

I find landscapes difficult too - find it hard to frame my shots.

  13. my girl hates car travel.

    she gets car sick.

she used to throw up when a puppy. she doesnt throw up anymore, but doesn't enjoy the trip either. She is much better.

A breeder told me puppies often get car sick, but grow out of it, or improve as they get older. Definitely the case here.

If your puppy is car sick and thats why she hates travel - dont feed her before hand - trust me.... (it's a lot of mess to clean up!)

  14. check in on the sheltie (shetland sheepdog) thread in breed sub forums. Sheltie owners sometimes have issues with puppy ears and have good advice.

I glued my girl's ears when she was teething. (Used tape and speed sew - had my breeder do it for me).

  15. Everyone is doing such a fantastic job. I seem to be in need of "subjects" as I don't have kids I might have to borrow some :)

I 'borrowed' mine - they are students of mine... Had to get their permission to put them up.

I find photo-bucket doesnt always show the photos off to their best either - but then - I am still learning and dont know what I am doing yet. I am only just starting to take photos on manual settings.

  16. May I ask usually when would it be the best time to have a sheltie puppy (or puppies in general) desexed?

I know some breeders send their puppies de-sexed to their new homes. Others have a contract with the new owner that the puppy will be de-sexed when it is a little bit older. Some of the sheltie breeders will hopefully be able to tell you what they do.

  17. my girl can get very itchy. I haven't had the testing done yet - as we decided to try eliminating a few things first. She has a definite reaction to Kikuyu grass. She is much better when i can keep her off it. Had my own lawn replaced at home because of it - and this has made a huge difference. Can't avoid it altogether though - it is at obedience training and at shows on the weekend. Fish oil in her diet is helping as well.
