  1. Maybe if I hold off tea until 1800 and then give him a late supper before bed? I have been trying to avoid feeding him too late lest he need to shit during the night. But now he seems to have the hang of going outside, not that I would rely on that at night, but all today he has been letting himself out with the catflap. How would I know if he was not getting enough food?
  2. Right I will get rid of the bucket. Noone ever remembers to use it anyway.
  3. He is only 9 1/2 weeks old and is very skinny, and I worry if he doesn't eat all his 4 daily meals because deerhounds grow really fast and I am concerned he will not have what he needs for his growth. I suppose I ought not to hand feed him as you say, but I just get so worried. Do you think the soapy water is safe for him? It's not that I mind, just I worry it will make him sick. EDIT: ps he ate his breakfast and lunch ok, this is his tea at 1600. Then I give him dinner about 2000.
  4. My puppy rejects his nice clean bowl of water in a freshly washed bowl and instead he is drinking from the bucket we keep in the shower (for conservation reasons we catch this shower water to use for flushing the lavatory). This water has been used for our showers so it has traces of soap, shampoo and conditioner in it of course. Is this dangerous for him, and why doesn't he like his nice clean water? I wash and rinse the bowl every day. Also, today he wouldn't eat his afternoon tea except when I hand fed it to him a little bit at a time, it's just minced beef that I warmed in the Microwave for 20 seconds. Should I worry? Should I stop him drinking the bucket water? Sorry if I am being a pest.
  5. I would get pointy ended ones too, you will need them if your dog gets a matt.
  6. Sumosmum I am so sorry for your loss.
  7. If it's any help, one of my husband's dogs had this injury some years ago and was operated. She did get back the full use of the leg without a limp but we were warned there would always be a weakness and predisposition to another injury. No idea whether this was the statistically probabvle result though.
  8. I sit on the floor at one end of the long passage and roll his squeaky ball up the passage, he scampers after and retrieves it. I am so proud of him for bringing it back reliably! He seemed to do this instinctively. When he is tired or has enough, he comes and climbs into my lap for a cuddle.
  9. I would just stay calm, the cat will probably stop monstering when he feels he has instilled sufficient humility/grovelling fear. When I had my first deerhound my cat used to shove him out of the way and take his dinner. Poor Fionn was terrified of him. But within a couple of years they were BFFs and would snuggle up together on the sofa.
  10. As a long standing cat person I think the problem is largely holding the cat. Cats don't like their freedom of movement curtailed and will resent it and also be made more nervous. I would try putting the puppy in a playpen and bringing the cats into the room. They are free and he isn't - a situation bound to appeal to a cat's nature.
  11. Kimness I have one made of perspex and my deerhound puppy learned to use it in less than 48 hours. I think the key is to push him through it, this way he gets to know that it really doesn't hurt his nose. I just get my pup around the ribs and gently shove him through it. EDIT: PS I should have said that I had to do this many. many times.
  12. Thank you, that's really thoughtful! It is going well as I get more in the habit of watching the clock, early morning seems to be the worst time when husband has gone and I'm in the shower.
  13. My puppy (9 1/2 weeks) is getting the hiccups about twice a day. Is this anything sinister? Should I worry?
  14. No, I am still taking him out because although he can now use the catflap to come IN, I have seen no evidence that he can use it to go out! But I will try putting him on the lead, I suppose he should get practice on it anyway before we actually go out anywhere. I didn't get him a collar because I thought the harness was safer until he has learned not to pull on the lead - is it ok to leave the harness on through the day or do I need to take it on and off every time?
  15. Harminee and Risyntira, thank you both so so so much. I will use Harminee's first one for the T-shirt but now I think I could get the one that you did Risyntira with the writing, on a coffee mug for him, it would be a lovely memorial. I cannot thank you both enough!
  16. Help! I've been following the good advice in this thread and took my puppy outside as soon as he woke up from his nap. However he has now learnt to use the catflap; he rushed straight back in, ran to the bedroom and weed on his bed! What's this about and what do I do?
  17. Thank you so much PF. I really don't want to have to smack him and the 'arrgggh' sounds just like what I use for my cats. Diva I am sorry, I didn't realise pictures were obligatory as I am new to the forum. I will get one up as soon as I can get my husband to upload them, today he has flown to Adelaide taking the camera. I wonder if 'arrggghh' would work on him? He is a Deerhound and utterly dropdead gorgeous (the puppy not my husband).
  18. That's a really good point that I hadn't thought of. Can you suggest how I might gently discourage it without being too harsh? He is only a tiny baby. And if I do, it won't hinder him from engaging in sexual relations when he is adult will it?
  19. Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can help me to do some fancy effects in Photoshop? I have this picture of my husband's beautiful GSD who passed away last year. I want to put him on a t-shirt for my husband but I think it would look so much nicer if I could cut out Rex in an oval with fuzzy edges like those old-fashioned pictures. Can anyone tell me if this can be done in Photoshop? thanks
  20. It doesn't have to be as gross as spitting. The belief in my family was that you occasionally give the dog some food from your mouth - ie when you have partially chewed a piece of meat or something you take it out and hand it to the dog. We did this in my family but I couldn't say whether it made any difference or not.
  21. Help! My little puppy has started a weird behaviour. He takes my foot in his mouth (ever so gently) and stands there doing rooting movements. Is this a normal part of his development, and should I refrain from discouraging it, because it is kind of yucky even though he doesn't actually mount my leg or anything. But if it is a necessary part of his development I will put up with it.
  22. He is only 9 1/2 weeks old, I just brought him home yesterday. I have never had a puppy before, only adult dogs, and I thought he would tell me when he needed to go out. How naive! I realise now after 24 hours that he is just a baby. So I am not saying anything about accidents (there has been 2 solid and 1 liquid so far) I just clean it up and I am trying to take him out more often, then when he does do something in the yard I praise him like anything. Is this right?
  23. I'm glad I found this thread. I was about to start one. I just brought home my new puppy this morning and he has just peed on his bed. I thought a dog would never soil his bed, is this just an old wives' tale? And is that what I was doing wrong, not taking him out every hour? I thought that by leaving the back door open and he knows where it is he would go out by himself when he needed to. I got caught on the phone and couldn't get off for a while and he was trying like anything to get my attention but I thought it was just being in a strange place and all, but could he have been trying to tell me he needed to go? I've never had a puppy before.
