  1. just so info for you to think about. My girl is from a pure Show Line of GSDs. But she has her herding title and works five feet from the herd. No barking etc just nice and calm. So this business about Show Line and HGH Line really does not come into play. It is if the instinct that the dog has and was breed for comes through or not.
  2. I own two GSD and one has a very sensitive stomach and the other eats anything with no problems. I have had my girl to the Vet sooooo many time with stomach problems. Eventually I changed her diet to Optimum (hope thats how it is spelt) and give tin fish with that and meat twice a week with the kibble. Have had no problems since so it may be worth your while to change the diet. I used Coprice and Supercoat and both upset her stomach. B ut as I said Optimum has settled her down and touch wood I have not had a Vet visit for over two years since changing her food. I also find chicken causes stomach problems so I no longer give her chicken. She get large leg bones twice a week - no problems. I believe that some GSD lines have major gut problems and you have to be extra careful.
  3. My older GSD has started to dig small holes and eat dirt. Does anyone know why?????
  4. I have a large breed dog who by the way does obedience. But the people next door have three poodle x something (which they breed from every season). These dogs were allowed to run free and one day they came up our driveway and attacked my girl through our garden fence (which is some 50 feet inside the boundary fence). Since then my girl hates little fluffy white dogs. She is okay with my daughters Jackrussell but is so aggressive with these dogs I cant believe it is the same dog. Theres dogs next door run up and down the fence challenging my girl and are never call off. I have had to put up an electric fence some 10 feet inside my back fence to stop her going near the fence. But these dogs continue their behaviour and are never call away. So yes I can say that some dogs do take dislikes to some breeds but it is generally caused by some incident.
  5. Is there any Clubs in NSW doing Rally O - also is there anyway to obtain information about training etc
  6. zzz contact me as I noticed you have posted me as a friend
  7. Yes we do 8yrs but what has that to do with the question I asked!!!
  8. Thanks for your replies. Yes I now it is dangerous and I just needed to be told again and again. If I lost her I would never forgive myself. The owner of the dog said it was okay if she was big enough to take the dog probable if it was my dogs I would have said no. She is an exceptional bitch, great nature, good herding etc. Loves the kids and would open the door and let anyone in and help them take what they wanted. Thanks again for your imput.
  9. Would you mate a maiden 7 years old bitch who is extremely fit and healthy. The reason that she has not been mated before is 1. Too busy competing. 2. Could not find the right dog until now. 3. Did not realise who old she was thought she was 12 months younger. Please I need constructive / positive comments.
  10. In my area there is a pine forest where you can walk your dogs on or off leash it covers about 10 acreas. My friend and I were walking our two dogs (on leash thank God)and were just about 8 mtrs from our car when we noticed a woman sitting outside her car drinking coffee. We thought that she was waiting for someone (she could see us and see our dogs were on leash). The next thing we know she threw her coffee on the ground and proceeded to open the back of her car. Her dogs rushed out and ran straight up and started to growl at our two girls (GSDs). I yelled at her to get her dogs away or put them on lead but she just stood here with a stupid look on her face. She called them back but they took off some mtrs down the track and then they came back to us but we were lucky enough to have reached our car and placed our dog in the back. I said the women what a silly thing to do as there could have been a dog fight and who knows what could have happened.
  11. Slobber on the rear windows of my station waggon especially when it has not been cleaned for two weeks.
  12. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I had similar but we were camping at Erskine Park (in our camper trailer) when we returned from the GSD Ring someone had gone through our camper and taken - camera, clothes, electric kettle and plates and knives. How is that and no one saw them. Our car was locked with our money hidden inside they did not break a window as the car has an alarm. I agree that not all dog people can be trusted.
  13. I have a GSD who barks whenever someone comes close to the fence or is actually walking up our driveway. After a visit from the Rangers (who suggested their spray collars, which did not work anyway) I purchased a barking collar dogtra YS500. It works wonderfully now I put it on her without turning it on. Highly recommend this one but you must realise that they are illegal in some states. The people who use reward training will no doubtably disagree with the use of such collars. But if the Council is involved it is worth the money and it works.
  14. Conztruct you have hit the nail on the head. Petrol Champions are those who travel miles to avoid competing against multiple dogs/bitches some of whom are shown successfully a Speciality Shows. I know that Herding, Tracking etc need specific areas and that people who compete at these type of trails are keen and travel long distances. I did not mean these to be classed as Petrol Champions what I was talking about are the Breed Showing ONLY.
  15. CONZTRUCT you have hit the nail on the head "Petrol Ch is one who travels long distance to avoid competition where there may be Speciality dogs/bitches attending. Of course herding, tracking etc has to have specialised areas to trail an yes we have to travel long distances to those particular events. I was speaking of Breed Shows only. Sorry if I was not clear enough.
  16. This thread has had some very good replies Thank your for your constructive imput. I opened this thread with a little of my history (as I had a idea that someone would get personal and not stay with the thread) and sure enough it became personal for only a couple of peoples. To those your questions did not warrant an answer. Our chosen sport is quite expensive and requires dedication and you need to be prepared for that if you are serious about breeding/showing dogs.
  17. Sorry Yarracully your wrong again assuming we have not travelled around Australia competing. Actually we have attended Shows in every State of Australia and yes we know the cost but it can be done with careful planning. I think you are getting off the thread and nit picking at what we may or may not have done in our Showing life of some 30years or more.
  18. Dont be confused Yarracully about where we lived - we lived in Sydney for sometime than moved to the mid west. Many people do that you know. As I said before you only need to attend One Speciality Show and be placed. By being placed at a Speciality it shows that your breeding is on the right track or not.
  19. Lots of comments some constructive others well I accept because that is your ideas same as this thread was my idea. Now to those that asked questions about me personally. Yes I have Judged (Speciality Shows). Yes I do show GSDs and show at Speciality Shows Only (because I to Live In The County Where There Are Only a Few Shows a Year). I did not see what these personal questions had to do with Cheep Champions but I did answer your thread anyway as what have I to lose. The rare breeds are certainly a problem but could be easily solved by requiring say 4-Best of Breed placing. I have known people who lived in Perth,Darwin, Adelaide and Hobart who travel to Speciality Shows in Sydney and Newcastle so I cant understand the locality being such a handicap. I admit that our CHs were gained in the Metro Area as there were quite a lot of shows we could attend at that time. There are still a lot of country people who attend Metro Shows so it would come down to ones dedication in travelling or not. The other point is that I have NEVER seen a Judge not award a place let alone a Challenge . I have observed a bitch awarded a Challenge that could hardly move around the show ring. That particular animal is now a CH and will probably be breed from. This is what I am about - someone will buy a puppy with the same problem as its dam. Do we as responsible people allow this or do we try to tighten up the CHs being awarded. Any Ideas.
  20. I have been involved with Dogs all my life and joined the Kennel Club in 1971. My husband and I bred showed and judged Bull Terriers for many years and gained BIS etc at Speciality Shows and All Breeds alike. We left the dog world for some years and became members of Dogs NSW so 8 years ago. A little bit of my history before I start this new topic. The title Australian Champion is very easy to achieve and can be done so (especially in country areas) without ever competing against another dog/bitch of the same breed. We used to call these Champions Title petrol/ cheep champions. I have seen advertisements stating "Australian Champion" on both sides. what really does this mean a Petrol Champion or one that has obtained their Title by competing against the best animals of that particular breed. The governing bodies need to change the way Champion Titles are obtained as new puppy buyers are been duped into believing that because you have Champion on a piece of paper it means the animals are the best in that particular breed which is not so. One suggestion is that before a CH Title can be awarded the animal must have show that is has been placed in the top four placing in a Speciality Show (Not Baby or Puppy ) from Junior onwards not the Puppy Classes. This than would help to improve the breeding and assist new owners in buying puppies of quality. Also it would greatly reduce the small breeders from indiscriminate breeding. If you visit any Dog Shelter you will find many pure breed dogs that have been given up and or mistreated. About 90% of these animals will be PTS. The Governing Bodies of Dogs would not approve of the above because of the financial loss but something has to be done to help the new owners and stop the breeding of unwanted dogs.
  21. I have been asked to look into this for our Club and come back with some answers . Many years ago I had parvo in a litter of puppies, we save three out of six. They had their first needles but they still came down with this dreadful virus. My vet at that time said not matter what I cleaned my puppy room with it would not kill the virus as it could live in the existing environment for many years. This is why I am asking for input so that I can go back to the Club with some of your comments (if that is okay with you all). The ground used for training is a public access for lead free dogs area and ground that the Club trains and run official obedience trials. I feel that we are putting young puppies at risk and also other dogs (as they can still get parvo even after have their vaccinations).
  22. Thank you for your replies. Our training area is an open grassed area and also a lead free area for the public. My main concern was parvo as there has been many reported outbreaks in my area and I believe that once this virus is in the ground it may stay for sometime and even disinfectants are of little use. I personally would not take my young puppies there until they have had at least two injections. Yes I know socialisation is important but should you risk your puppies at this young age.
  23. K9Pro - My girl has never played with toys, sticks or anything else. I have a hep load of toys but she ignores them. I asked the owner of her sire and she said that he was the same never played with toys. But she will follow the cat around the house all day long. It has made it quite hard for me to train her as she will not hold or fetch. What can you suggest as I will soon be in Open.
  24. The Obedience Club that I belong to has started classes for baby puppies, that is for puppies from the age of 10 weeks, 12 weeks, onwards. My main concern is that some of these young puppies have not had all their needles. What are your Clubs regulations on allowing dogs on the training grounds that have not completed their needle programme.
